The announcers say Georgia is a very tough defensive team. So besides that do they have good scorers? Do they like to slow it down?

I hope it is a clean game and Iowa doesnt get mugged two years in a row.

Check out Braydon's article on the front page:

Georgia plays an aggressive matchup zone defense that tries to pressure opponents into turning the ball over. Iowa got a taste of that against Central Florida last year. At its best, it will look somewhat similar to Northwestern’s aggressive zone defense that has given Iowa so much trouble in the past few years. If Georgia is going to beat Florida State and give Iowa a challenge this weekend, its zone defense will likely be a big part of it.

I wasn't impressed with Georgia OR FL St, that being said sometimes Iowa is it's own worst enemy. They have a better chance of finding a way to lose versus get beat by the other team. Iowa will score, question is can Georgia keep up and then it will come down to turnovers and rebounding. Plus it's Iowa at home.

Georgia is a bad 3 point shooting team (113 makes this year to Iowa's 293). They have size & play good D (held opponents to 58.6 PPG this season).

Story from ESPN:

This feels familiar: Iowa hosts a 10-seed on its home court in the second round. What do you expect when the Hawkeyes face Georgia on Sunday?

Voepel: It's eerie how similar the circumstances are to last year. Friday, No. 2 seed Iowa won its March Madness opener by 52 points, the program's largest margin of victory in an NCAA tournament game, with Caitlin Clark scoring 26 points. That followed No. 10 seed Georgia beating No. 7 Florida State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Last year, the Hawkeyes were also a No. 2 seed, won their opener by 40, then faced the No. 10 seed, which had upset No. 7. That didn't go well for Iowa, which lost 64-62 to Creighton. Iowa does not want a repeat.

Georgia is a tough opponent, for different reasons than Creighton was. The 2022 Bluejays shot a ton of 3-pointers. Georgia was last in the SEC in 3s; the Bulldogs have 113 this year to Iowa's 293. As a result, the zone the Hawkeyes used so effectively against SE Louisiana on Friday could be big against Georgia, too./p>

But the Bulldogs have size, depth and defense: They have held foes to 58.6 PPG this season. Iowa, which has averaged a Division I-best 87.8 PPG, wants a high-scoring game Sunday. Both Clark and teammate Monika Czinano said Friday the Hawkeyes will talk as a team about last year and what went wrong in the second round, although this will be a very different matchup

"Not even so much about the X's and O's, but more how dialed in we have to be for every game," Czinano said. "The coaches don't even have to say it. We all know."

Isn’t Georgia the team who bet Iowa last time they were in the final 4, 30 years ago?

Iowa fans are understandably worried about this game. Just last year, 10-seed Creighton defeated Iowa in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to begin a Cinderella run to the Elite Eight.

Now Cedar Rapids native and former Iowa player Katie Abrahamson-Henderson brings her 10-seeded Georgia team to Iowa City looking to complete a storybook ending of her own. What problems will Georgia present for Iowa on Sunday?

GEORGIA’S ZONE

Georgia is led by its defense. The Bulldogs rank 25th nationally in opponent’s points per 100 possessions and 14th nationally in steal rate.

A big reason for that defensive success is Georgia’s zone. The Bulldogs will likely play a 3-2 (or 1-2-2) zone the entire game. At its best, the zone is meant to cause chaos on the perimeter through aggressive traps on the wing or in the corners. Against Florida State, Georgia had a couple runs of success generating turnovers in the second quarter and early fourth quarter. Those turnovers—especially in the fourth—helped swing momentum in the game.

But outside of those two periods, Georgia’s zone didn’t cause Florida State that many issues. The Seminoles average 13.5 turnovers per game and only had 14 against Georgia.

When I think of aggressive, turnover-focused zones I think Northwestern. The Wildcats were down this year, but caused Iowa problems in Caitlin Clark’s first two years because they never stop looking to turn teams over. I don’t think this Georgia defense is quite that disruptive.

The biggest benefit of Georgia’s 3-2 zone against Florida State was limiting dribble penetration. When Georgia was set Florida State got very little going to the basket all game. Instead, the Seminoles settled for jumpers that they mostly missed outside of a few hot streaks like in the game’s opening minutes.

Like all defenses, the 3-2 zone has its weaknesses. Many of Florida State’s jumpers were wide open. Had Florida State shot well from three, the game could’ve gone very differently.
In particular, Georgia’s zone is susceptible to overloads where the opposing offense has a shooter on the wing, in the corner, and a post on the low block. Like all zones, teams can also unlock it via quick passes that swing the ball before the zone has time to shift. There is no better player at putting long skip passes on the money than Clark.

They always say there’s two ways to beat a zone. Get the ball to the high post and pass out of it when a defender comes, or shoot over the top of it. The latter should bode well for us.

We don’t do a lot of dribble drive in the half court from what I’ve seen. Either fast passes into the post or outside shots. If Czinano can get the ball and quickly make her move she should be able to beat the help defender. Otherwise our outside shooters should feast. I’m not expecting 90+ points, especially if Georgia tries to take the air out of the ball like they should. But I don’t see them holding us to 59 barring a catastrophic shooting performance by us.

Caitlan and Monika will not get many points in the paint. The other 3 players have got to hit their open 3's. They will take away Czinano due to their size. If the other 3 do not hit the 3's we will be in trouble.

They mugged the crap out of FSU. If we get those refs we are screwed

Based on what I have seen, Georgia will be very physical vs. Iowa and if the refs let them "play rough" Iowa will have a very tough game tomorrow. Pushing Iowa around worked for @Maryland, Indiana (both games) and I suspect this is the plan for anyone playing Iowa from here on out.......
Refs dont have to "protect" Iowa players from contact....I just hope they might be consistent....and in the first couple of days of this NCAA the one thing I haven't seen is a lot of consistency in reffing.

I guess, BUT, these teams are 10 seeds for a reason. I mean why did they lose to a bunch of teams that probably aren't as good as Iowa, if they can just impose their will? My guess. 1). Clark and company are on a mission. 2) they remember last years 2nd game loss. 3). Just like the coach in the first game said they had a great defense, they haven't played anyone like Clark in those games. 4). We're playing in a sold out Carver, and that place is juiced this season. Not saying that it will be easy, but The ladies advance to the next round tomorrow....

20 days ago Georgia traveled to #1 South Carolina and lost 73-63. They trailed by 8 at the half and by 11 heading into the 4th quarter.

Similar to what they did at South Carolina, I expect them to "stick around" but with the Hawks winning by 10 plus.

EDIT: I mentioned above that Georgia is a bad 3 point shooting team. In this game, they only attempted 4 threes and made 1.

I agree that it will be a game, but don't see all the "we'll be in trouble". Maybe the clock runs out on her brilliance, but Clark is transending right now. She's almost playing a different game. Each new challenge seems to motivate her to raise her play even more.

I think the SEC is a better conference than the Big10. More athletic players. I hope you are right. It will not be easy.
