Elvis

One way to experience Elvis is to visit Graceland in
Memphis. Our family enjoyed the time we spent
touring the mansion, the outside property and
looking at his cars and jets.
My daughter went thru Memphis a couple of years ago and wanted to tour Graceland but said it was stupid expensive and she didn't want to see it that bad.

I'm kind of wanting to see it. I don't care that much about Elvis, and I think I know the beats of the story well enough, but I'm kind of a sucker for the Lurmann's super stylized fantastical look. It just gives me a charge. Nobody else in my family is interested.

I had limited time in Memphis a few years ago and wanted to see Graceland also, but due to time & location instead visited the Civil Rights Museum. It is located in the Lorraine Motel where MLK Jr. was assassinated. Very well done museum.

Riveting movie. Will prolly win Best Picture, Actor and Supporting Actor Oscars. It really tells
his story as it was, warts and all. Dude playing Elvis is mesmerizing; I couldn't take my eyes
off the screen whenever he was on it.

Highly recommend you see it.
The review that I got this morning from the older lady on her cell phone in the waiting room of the auto dealership said that they didn't have enough of his gospel phase, so she wouldn't recommend it. But she was hoping to see Top Gun:Maverick with Jack when she gets back from vacation. Jack isn't a 'Friend', he is just a friend.

I'm 45 and have absolutely no interest in Elvis.

I could be wrong but other than the boomers, I can't see this movie having a lot of interest.

My friend and I more or less stumbled on the Lorraine Motel while wandering around. It was very moving, you have to be there. Memphis is a good food town but I was disappointed in the alligator gumbo. Turns out I don't care much for alligator meat. Still lots of options superior to Nashville fried chicken. Go south on the river into Mississippi and you will have some great gumbo, tamales, catfish and pies.

I think my daughter went there. Her and her BF drove from San Diego to Baltimore and took 10 days to see as many sights as possible. BTW her favorite was the museum in Oklahoma City where the bombing took place. Said it was just incredible. The Davidian compound in Waco too. She also stood on the corner in Winslow Arizona, among other things.

The clothier which Elvis frequented is still open and doing business downtown. Or was when I was there.

While you are down there spend a couple of days at Shiloh National Military Park. A lot of Iowans fought for and lost their lives there. You can get a clean hotel at the highway cloverleaf in Corinth, MS.

I’ve been to the Federal building in OKC probably three times, and your daughter is right…very solemn, and an incredible memorial. I will check out the Davidian compound when I get a chance. I didn’t know there was anything there to see.

I was mentioning this to my family yesterday. I'm 50, and Elvis was still "a thing" when we were younger. He was gone, but he still mattered. So I definitely remember living in a world where Elvis was relevant.

However, I really don't know a person my age that gives a shit about Elvis. It's not like the Beatles, Bob Dylan, or even something like Johnny Cash. You might or might not like some of his music, but I don't know anyone for whom Elvis means anything.

Which made me kind of marvel at the movie coming out when I thought about it. When I was young we were still being bombarded with Elvis content/product on the regular so seeing there was a movie coming out didn't strike me as remarkable right away. But I realized that it's been probably close to 25-30 years since most of that Elvis content started to dry up.

Made me really wonder...who is the movie for? The days are gone when there was a huge swath of people (women?) ready to shell out cash for anything with Elvis' face on it, so its not for them. People must have felt some compelling reason to make this now.

I don't know whether it makes me more interested or less in seeing it. On one hand less...if you're my age or older, you know the basic beats of the Elvis story already, and I fear that just hitting all those points may conceivably interested to someone exposed to it for the first time, but could be dull for anyone knowing the story.

One the other hand, to bring something like this to the screen without much of a built in audience to leverage, it makes me feel like the producers may think they've got a way to tell the story that will be new and exciting.

Did they show the part where he tried to pick up my sister-in-law (then 19) in a shopping mall in Germany?

I bet they had her singing a duet with Elvis? Am I right? And politely turning him down? (Go take a cold shower!! ... at least that is the lore that has been handed down.)

For the record, Elvis was the only American soldier those two girls were allowed to talk to. Her Mother approved of no one else.

...................................

In any event, I am looking forward to seeing this film.

She actually spoke to one of the Davidians that survived, can't recall the name. He wrote a book about the event.

Saw it last night. Meh. People will enjoy it, just wasn’t for me. I’ll say this, the 2nd half of the movie was much better that the 1st

I just read his wiki. Is it true when in the army he groomed a 14 year old into marrying him?
It’s pretty amazing how much of this stuff was going on back then with jailbait girlfriends / groupies / and wives from 50s through 80s that would never be tolerated now. Be career killers and likely jail time. And strange thing is we live in a much more sexulaized nation with teenagers who grow up even faster. It’s a strange dichotomy. As in “nothing even close to sexual on tv including even a couple in the same bed and yeah all porn is illegal but hey, it’s no big deal to mess around with 13-16 year olds”

It sounds as if Winslow, AZ knows how to capitalize on these things. Do they have any plaques or anything marking the location? Perhaps a reenactment festival on occasion?

My favorite kind of minor but fascinating tourist attraction involves a plaque in an alley in San Francisco marking the site where the fictional Brigid O'Shaughnessy murdered a very fictional Miles Archer. (The Maltese Falcon)

This stuff is getting fuzzy, but I think Priscilla was the daughter of an American Air Force officer when they met. She did marry him some years later, but the public story was that Elvis did the honorable thing and waited for her to grow up ... There were some logistical issues that remain unexplained (He was in the U.S. and she was still in Germany) but Elvis is the King, and even then could do what he wanted.

I suspect that a minor rewrite may have occurred, but this "Grooming" angle is based on language that was not even extant at the time. It is highly suspect and Priscilla is certainly no Virginia Giuffre.

I think the statue is Glenn Frey.

Hope ur right. Currently they have someone who most definitely did not play guitar with Elvis making his first song in front of Tom Hanks in a gymnasium sound great. Oh damn and rap. Okay they're doing like a lot of new music with this. Interesting sounding at least.

I got through the first half tonight. Free on one of the movie channels. Been ok so far.

I'm early 40s and a big fan of Elvis music, just not a die-hard or collector like some people. So I was in the target audience of the movie. My wife wasn't a fan of Elvis but wanted to watch the movie and enjoyed it.

In my opinion the movie was good but not great. It was also safe. You can tell that the family was very much involved in approving what made it to the screen. Completely glossed over the fact that Priscilla was 14 when he was 24 in Germany. Nothing about the "contract" between her parents and him where she would live with him before they were married but nothing was supposed to happen. Only a small amount about the other women too.

They spent almost no time on his post-military movie career, basically fast forwarding through it until he was at the end and hated making movies.

Spent a lot of time on the TV special and Las Vegas show. Then fast forwarded again through much of his downfall. Showed the pills he was given, but nothing about his horrible diet that led to the weight gain. Showed him getting on a plane in 74 after dropping Lisa Marie off with Priscilla and then as he's climbing the stairs did a text-over talking about him dying three years later.

The movie seemingly was made to set up Col. Parker as a villain even though he is the narrator and tries to explain how he didn't kill Elvis.

It will get nominated for some awards, but I'm not sure if it will win anything. The main actor was pretty good, it will be interesting to see if this springboards his career. Hanks was good, but has been better. I will give him credit though, he wasn't just being Tom Hanks, "everyman". He actually had to do some acting that would be unique for his career compared to any other role.
