ESPN Bubble Watch is a fraud

Going into the day, Maryland and Penn State was already listed as locks. Iowa and Michigan State was on Should be in list and MSU beats Nebraska and Iowa gets a Top 25 win over OSU and somehow Michigan State gets upgraded to the lock status! That makes no sense!

I think as the days go on before the MSU game we'll be upgraded.

They just wanted to get one more cheap shot in about our defense and how they disagree with us being as high as a 6 seed (because they keep bringing it up).

ESPN's product has greatly diminished over the past decade. They do half the work they used to, only fully cover about 10% of the power conference teams, are completely biased to conference teams they have conference network deals with, and have lost out on a lot of the TV rights for the weekly marquee games. Yet they somehow still have a great deal of influence in both college basketball and football.

Again it’s absolutely insane to me how SOS is what’s holding Iowa back when one tool says 89th SOS but another says 6th (that is not as often used.. referenced but not the official tool)

Did the ESPN telecast have 9th SOS shown last night? I remember saying something to my friend on how impressive that we had won 18 games when I saw it

When you have a bunch of good wins like Iowa does the caliber of cupcakes you played should be irrelevant.

Playing 200 ranked teams vs 300 wouldn't make one bit of difference to anything.

No people expect them to have a true idea not some made up idea

You're right, because being listed as a "lock" instead of a "should be in" on Feb 21st by some internet dude means everything to this program. Top-level recruits are scanning projections, and the players themselves are too, seeing how hard they need to play from now on. And how much is Fran's "Lock bonus" this year?

Did Michigan St possibly have more quality non-conference wins?

We all know Iowa is in as they arent going to lose out.

People cut their cable which affected ESPN greatly. They have billions less in revenue which leads to less coverage.

Should we be really surprised? This is the same network last week who had a poll for top big man (not player) in the nation and didn't even have Garza on the list.

The original creator of the Bubble Watch article is at the Athletic now. I like his better. And not just because he locked up Iowa last week.

Just looked at Bracketology, which has IA as a 6 seed, playing USC (which means we would get to mess them up again), in St. Louis. in which Creighton is the 3 seed and Dayton is the 2 seed. Sign me up for that right now!

ESPN knows Iowa fans are a passionate, active bunch. When they did that NPOY poll that left off
Garza but included 4 big men that was not by accident. Engagement is engagement.

I think both are probably locks, but Michigan St. just erased any semblance of the chance for a bad loss the rest of the way; already has 18 wins, and played a very respectable non conference schedule... I don't think there is any slight to having some razor thin margin between them locking and us not locking.

Me too. Also has UNI in st. Louis vs Ohio St. Fun time.

At least $1,200........

Well, MSU just won at Neb, which we couldn't, so there's that.

There can't be a fan base in the country more offended by meaningless bowl projections and bracketology. Insecurity is not a good look. Get a grip.

Sorry that some people expect some degree of rational thought and an attempt at fairness in some aspects of life.

Yes, ESPN has become a fraud. The only time I watch is when they have an Iowa FB or BB game on.

Hmmm.... road win vs. home win ? We didn't win in Lincoln so I'm not sure this is the argument I'd be spending my time on

Yep, I'll take some of that as well. Then we can put this NPOY to bed as well, and let the Garzilla maul Dayton. And yes I realize that Toppin won't be guarding Luka, but just the look on his face watching a real big time player do his work would be priceless......

Guess its time to erase that margin on Tuesday then.....

You're right - someone declaring Michigan St as a "lock" and Iowa as a "should be in" is completely irrational and unfair. How dare they. Just think of the consequences this will bring.....

Its a great example of media value. Iowa is always an afterthought because our media market is tiny, hence our media value is tiny.

Its not even a matter of national media hostility. Its indifference. So when Iowa lands a recruit, they fall on national lists. When Iowa is doing well, like in football, we gain less media from media magnets like Nebraska (small market but has a large national media value based on ancient history).

That makes it much harder to win because its much harder to recruit at Iowa. ESPN, for all its many failings-and they are legion-sets much of the national sports narrative. Its not what it was 20 years ago but they really have the big mic that tells HS coaches, AAU coaches and players what to think and where to play college ball.

We’re a lock now so that’s dope and lunardi (who sucks at his job) actually moved us up to a 5 from a 6 after last night
