ESPN bull

I erroneously predicted a long time ago that wrestling’s popularity would dramatically increase with UFC becoming mainstream, unfortunately that hasn’t been the case. This US freestyle team is really good and should compete for multiple gold medals, sadly I expect the coverage to be piss poor.

I guess as an insular fan and fan base Kyle Snyder and Spencer seem like cool stories. But you’re right not many care. Moving on!

NBC telecast a number of matches during the Olympic Team Trials last month, both men's matches and women's matches. Certainly dedicated wrestling fans 'enjoyed' some of these matches. However a 'casual sports fan' would understand virtually nothing of these matches. And the commentators offered very little in describing and/or clarifying the action (?). An absolute disastrous presentation of International Wrestling (freestyle).

Fortunately NBC presented no Greco matches. Anticipate more of the same in August (?).

I know we won’t compete with track, gymnastics, swimming, but I agree that it’s crap these BMX, kayaking type sports get some coverage during good time slots, and old Olympic sports like wrestling and weightlifting get no coverage, or maybe 3 am coverage for metal matches. Even track, gymnastics and swimming have little fan support if not during the Olympics .

I try to avoid ESPN at all costs but sometimes it necessary. I clicked on 30 athletes to watch at Olympics. Names you would expect but was hoping at least one wrestler even if it wasn’t Spencer. Nope none. But breakdancing (wtf) Jimmer Fredette and a female BMX racer. What a joke.
I watch UFC on ESPN+ most weeks.

Wait a minute.... by breakdancer Jimmer Fredette we have to be talking about the smooth as warm butter, white chocolate point guard from BYU like 15 year ago who won POY? Now he's an Olympic breakdancer? That guy could shoot the ball anywhere on the court at any time. That is a much better story than watching Kathy break her glasses over and over again, which is the only marketing ESPmsNbc would direct to wrestling anyway. That is pretty cool about Jimmer though.

i guess people are just always going to complain about espn

but they put as much wrestling on tv as anyone

Flo and BTN definitely put out more but ESPN has the Natty's. If they were to drop it, guaranteed flo would jump in.

I agree with you, I like the traditional Olympic sports. Imagine being a weightlifting fan trying to find out when to watch that? And I’m one of those guys that start tracking field was need to watch and small doses. And yes, Olympic wrestling.

I had no interest in the gymnastics at all, and these new events, such as BMX riding breakdancing or whatever the hell else they’re adding. But they’re adding it just purely for money and demographics, I remember when we started into this personal anecdote, kind of human interest, story stuff. And I couldn’t stand it.

I’m guessing they did a lot of that to get female or viewership but still the women don’t really watch the sports as much. All they’ve done is dilute the games in my opinion and make them less likable however I do stream Peacock so I’ll be able to go back and watch the wrestling matches and Olympic weightlifting and such at my convenience so that’s one positive for me.
