Just secured a forecast to Iowa on TOS.

Gotta be honest, I don't love it. Only averaged 7 pts and 5 reb for Belmont. Certainly not the game-changing forward we desperately need out of the portal. Decent get if he's just a depth piece, but hopefully we won't have to rely on him for big minutes next year.

He seems fundamentally solid. Does anyone know what his minutes were and what kind of offense they ran at Belmont? If he wasn't the focal point of the offense and had a star or 2 i can get the stats i guess.

Started every game save one, about 21 minutes a game. Another poster, a Drake fan as recall, mentioned he's watched Belmont and Brauns multiple times and Belmont is a very perimeter oriented offense, rarely ran the offense through the low post.

Non-scholarship walk on is what I've heard... OK with that.
Seems like Fran always ends up with extra schollies after portal transfers shake out. We shall
see.

Iowa City kid---would be great to see him succeed, but makes me think he's likely a below the rim
guy, so hopefully he bulks up/has skills to make up for lack of athleticism if that turns out to
be accurate assessment.

Pmac certainly is worthy of schollie, but given Fran is taking $3million annual pay day, if he really wanted'to
win he could use that schollie or ask PMAC to play better defense.

Thanks. That's kind of what I thought cause he seems very capable. Not much inside offense and long rebounds. Can affect stats pretty dramatically. And fp had to average 30 minutes a game. Weird to see low 20's.

He’s already bulky at 6’9” and 240 pounds. Looks slightly more athletic and longer than Rebraca. Check out the film. Definitely a great deal if he walks on, but probably a good insurance scholarship if we lose a big besides Murray.

Most teams advancing in the tournament aren't playing offense through the post, thats what bigten teams do and get eliminated early.

Just about every team advancing has multiple bigs that rebound and defend the rim.
Maybe that's why Fran is recruiting guards and wings and rebounding bigs from the portal. Would be really nice to have a couple guards that are 3 point shooters. To run a strong defense and rebound with his style of offense we are definitely in need of some depth. I'm dying to know who is headed to the transfer portal and who we can call players who deserve minutes that are walk ons with nil. Sounds like Braun is a walk on. That would be a definite plus.

If he's really walking on thats great.

Id be good with swapping him out for Mulvey or Josh too assuming an additional big is coming too.

Definitely can't have all 3 of them on scholarship though.
I'd guess there is a near 0% chance both JO and Mulvey stick around. I could see Mulvey, but I'd be shocked if JO is on the roster next season. I'll gladly swap Brauns for JO.

This guy looks playable next season. Pretty big, plays strong and has a nice touch around the basket. Spent some time last night looking at some film of the new guys and Brauns looks thicker but Owen Freeman is a real center and pretty strong for freshman. With a true 4, in "power" sense of the word Ladji Dembele we seem to have some low post options, albeit untested. I think, without further developments Braun would probably start game one but I think Freeman earns that job pretty fast.

Is Braun basically John Harrar from Penn State a couple years ago? 'Playable' seems like apt phrasing. He can give you competent minutes which you can't comfortably say any big gives Iowa next year as the roster currently stands. Excited for Freeman, but can't rely on freshmen bigs to immediately contribute.

If Fran can get a big like Jordan Minor then that would solidify Braun as a very good backup big. Freeman a flex... Play him if he has talent, or don't if he needs time to develop. That's my hope. Fran can't afford to strike out again this offseason.

Are we thinking Freeman comp is Ryan Kreiner? Better?

Much much better and about the same size. Long arms like Ryan but much more athletic player. Better jumper and faster/quicker at the same stage. Ryan was probably a better face up shooter but I always see that as a bonus for a guy that should be scoring within ten feet.

However, always the caveat, he has not yet seen the elephant.

Did you read the article? He's likely walking on. Why would anyone get mad about someone walking on?
Didn’t really confirm walk on or not
Either way he isn’t really a difference maker , love having a local kid. Hope it works out for everyone

Good stuff. I like all of that. Hope one of the new additions can do a little rim protecting as well. All things considered, sounds like the front court should at least be serviceable by mid to late season.

I would be interested to learn more about the experience of walk-on players in the Iowa basketball program, as well as the realities of what it takes for a walk-on to earn time in the regular rotation. We saw it happen with Nicholas Baer, but generally speaking, it seems pretty rare.

With Brauns potentially coming as a walk-on, and with the potential Nimmers showed in the video that is going around, I’d like to know more about what being a walk-on is really like. Do these kids get the same opportunities as scholarship kids?

Brauns is not coming to Iowa to walk on and barely play. Why would he? He’s getting minutes somewhere. Again, I watched him a few times against Drake, Belmont used him as a screener and passer. He’s a big solid dude but needs a lot of work offensively. Kind of agree w @The Deplorable Sleeping Dog that he might get the starting job early until Freeman grows into it. He’s the future.

I doubt that he’d barely get minutes next season. If Mulvey and Ogundele stick around he’s better than both of them, and you got a pair of true freshman coming in.
He’d play a lot.

He is probably a walk-in that will be awarded a scholarship if one of the bigs enters the portal. My bet is he was promised one if it opens up.
This is what I think too. He sure looks like he deserves a scholarship to me. That being said, paying 2 years in-state tuition (if he isn't getting NIL money) is chump change. It's pretty clear the family and Even really want to be an Iowa Hawk!
