Well, this was IowaLaw's third visit to see the Hawks play in the famous Rose Bowl. It was also the third time he left utterly disappointed in the team's failure to come prepared to play. The surging Hawks lose 20-17 in the ugliest of ways to 3-5 conference doormat UCLA. The Hawks have yet to beat a single team with a pulse and have no other ranked teams on the schedule for the remainder of the season. Where do we go from here after starting the season with legitimate playoff hopes?

1. Johnson Struggles Mightily. The last goal of any prestige this season (beating a .500 team in the Duke's Mayo bowl doesn't count) has effectively been eliminated. Gone is any chance at Johnson receiving an invitation to the New York Athletic Club for the Heisman Trophy presentation. While Ashton Jenty was out running for 260 yards and 4 touchdowns against a Top 20 opponent, Johnson was completely ineffective against a very weak UCLA. 18 rushes for just 49 yards is a major step back for Iowa's superstar, who just didn't seem to have his running legs in LA. Not to mention, he was not even in there in the 4th quarter of a tied game? Sure, the OLine was atrocious and allowed penetration on almost every down, but there's no excuse for an NFL caliber back averaging 2.7 yards per carry against any team...let alone UCLA. They say live by the run and die by the run. On this night, the Hawks died by the run.

2. Gill Steps Up. Well how about that? Gill, who would have been Northwestern's 5th string WR and barely saw the field this year, is far and away Iowa's top receiver (which isn't saying much given who else is in the WR room). The guy takes bigger hits than I can remember a Hawkeye WR taking, yet he keeps bouncing back and making plays. 6 catches for 140 yards is the best game I can remember a WR having since Brian was installed as the OC many years ago (Charlie Jones went over 100 yards once, not sure anyone else did). Gill looks poised to be one of the key pieces to next year's offense.

3. DLine With Springs on their Shoulder Pads. Ouch. The tackling out there looked like what you'd see in a PeeWee league game playing against "baby Gronk." To add insult to injury, it was the nation's LAST ranked rushing attack who carved up the DL like Thanksgiving turkey. The Bruins backup RB somehow rushed for 125 yards for an average of 6.3 yards per carry. UCLA also had 3 other players average more than 5 yards per carry. Where was the tackling? The DL can't rely on guys like Cooper DeJean & Jay Higgins to clean up their mess week after week. Just awful across the board.

4. Is Sullivan Our Guy Next Year? Sully was tentative but serviceable...and far better than Cade ever was. However, if you want to win Power 5 games, one dimensional quarterbacking rarely works. Sullivan had decent stats in 6/9 for 157 yards and 10 yards rushing, but his 3 turnovers were backbreakers (and I'm sure Kirk made him afraid of his own shadow after each one). Everyone on the UCLA sideline (and their fans) knew Iowa had no depth at QB behind Sullivan...yet the Hawks insisted upon randying around and calling QB sneaks where Sullivan unnecessarily took a half dozen massive hits without it even occurring to him to slide. Whether Sully is the guy once Cade is healthy this season is up in the air...but will Sullivan be the guy next year or does Kirk go fish? QB is the most important position on the field. I just don't think Sullivan, with his shot put throwing motion, is a good enough QB to give a team a prayer at a playoff birth. You've gotta hit the portal hard and see if there's interest out there.

5. RIP Tight End U. Kudos to the Tim Lester offense for finally including the WRs and a small amount of down field passing. But the tight ends combined for 0 catches against UCLA after getting just 3 receptions the previous week. I was at the game in person and didn't see the telecast, but thought Lachey was cleared to play. If so, what happened? Lachey has just 24 catches all year, which is even worse than he did two years ago as an unknown backup. I'm fine with de-prioritizing the TE position like Iowa has de-prioritized the fullback position if it means a more dynamic, big play offense that utilizes a group of talented WRs. But without any real WR threats out there, it's pretty strange to completely go away from the TEs.

6. The Stellar Defense Forced Just 1 Punt? The elite Iowa defense only managed to force UCLA's low octane offense to punt 1 time all game? Far too many easy third down conversions to wide open receivers. Too many 8 yard runs on first down making it impossible to force a punt. All-American Castro missing tackles? 5 star safeties playing like walk-ons? I just don't get it. What happened to these guys and their Broyles Award winning coach. How about the recently promoted "associate head coach" Seth Wallace, to pocket a MAJOR pay raise after last season's defense? It's unacceptable. The defensive staff is extremely well paid compared with their peers and they've got more talent that virtually any other Big 10 team. This loss falls on the staff.

I did not see any weak UCLA line in this game at all. They were blowing up Iowa's line blocking on every run play.
Where were any of Johnson's legs going to run through when there were no holes to run through

Kirk didn't have to make Sillivan afraid of his own shadow. UCLA's defensive line did a fine job of that.

Can't agree more about not using more of the tight ends.
I feel that was on Lester.

Defense has struggled somewhat all year.
I still won't give up on them though.

You are right on Sullivan, his 2 ints were just awful decisions and cant be made by a 4th or 5th year guy. We need at least 1 QB in portal and hopefully they a try for 2.

Have to wonder if the Hawks can even gain a split in the Maryland and Nebraska games?

Anyone watching the game would have seen UCLA selling out on 1st and 2nd downs, run blitzing LBs and/or CBs to take away Kaleb. They wanted to force 3rd and long, expecting Sullivan to not be able to make the plays needed. Do not blame KB. Blame Lester for not calling more play action passes to get UCLA’s back seven off the line of scrimmage.

Hey look who's back to post about a loss because posting snarky rehashed comments after a win is just not as polarizing, and only too obviously antagonistic.

Lmao

1. Johnson Struggles Mightily.
I put this solely on the OL AND Lester - I had flashbacks of BF play calling. Not one screen to KB, WTF?
2. Gill Steps Up.
100% spot on, I will go on record saying that Seth Anderson will be gone next month (hunch) and I have no problem with that. Happy to have Howard take his minutes any way.
3. DLine With Springs on their Shoulder Pads.
Yup, this might be one of the worst DLs we have had in awhile - which obviously puts a strain on our secondary to cover WRs extra long...
4. Is Sullivan Our Guy Next Year?
We absolutely need other QB options next season. Sully and Lester both get Failing grades vs. UCLA, but let's hope things revert back to how they both looked vs. NU and WI.
5. RIP Tight End U.
Not sure, if the injury bug is to blame. But Lester is mirroring Waldron (Chicago Bears) by forgetting that the TE is a valuable tool in the toolbox (especially for inexperienced QBs).
6. The Stellar Defense Forced Just 1 Punt?
The word elite does not come to mind when describing this year's Defense. It's too bad we pissed away last year's elite Defense by having arguably having the worst QB and OC in college football, but it is what it is....

Sullys injury is on the coaches. Great to have a running qb but no one taught him how to slide??
Idiocy.
Keep rolling your right hand qb left?
Wth?

Need to figure out a way to (A) locate, and then (B) sign effective OLinemen.
I suggest combing the JUCO ranks, especially for OTs.

details. MSU embarrassed us. so we only suck 2 out of 4. Impressive.
I'm done letting our fanbase be lazy with the details/revisionist history.

You all can get mad about it for all I care, but I read that sh** daily in social media when I see our fans talking to/arguing with non-Iowa fans and it's just f***ing embarrassing.

So I'm gonna annoy the sh** out of all of you and correct your lazy asses when you refuse to spend the <15 seconds it takes to fact-check your own f***ing points................

You're welcome. :D

Kj couldn't run as there were ZERO holes to hit. OL got destroyed.

True but KJ needs a gapping hole to run does not have any jump cut ability to avoid intial tackles
I disagree, he has weaved his way through some multi-level blocks for big gains. There was no daylight, even to the corners to run anywhere. When they went prevent, kj was able to get yards due to not having 8 guys up.

I agree but he needs to get started and when he does not he is down on contact

I'm done letting our fanbase be lazy with the details/revisionist history.

You all can get mad about it for all I care, but I read that sh** daily in social media when I see our fans talking to/arguing with non-Iowa fans and it's just f***ing embarrassing.

So I'm gonna annoy the sh** out of all of you and correct your lazy asses when you refuse to spend the <15 seconds it takes to fact-check your own f***ing points................

You're welcome. :D
2 out of the last 4 instead of 2 out of the last 3. Well, that changes everything.

Law - You were way too kind. Good call on Sully, nice 2nd and 3rd teamer but turnover/injury waiting to happen. Doubt you will ever from Gill again. Not much upside there either. What happen to the D? they are playing better qbs and OCs and facing more talent. And Hawks are simply a terrible road team. The Elite D has always been a myth but Hawk fans needed something to brag about besides the punter. The Hawk safteys are just dreadfully bad, embarrassing really.
Great job Law. Tremendous assest to this forum. You call it as it is.But like the angry Law better.
@HerkieBachZewinski - kindness is my middle name. Gill is serviceable in the way Ragaini was. Not a great Big 10 WR, but he'll get stats because he's all we have. Fortunately, the Hawks hired Wunderkind WR coach (who seems to be gaining 5 lbs after each game) who is a well known recruiter (i.e. somehow he managed to lure Deacon Hill to Iowa).

@Hendy hawk - Kirk has a long track record of QB regression and making his guys so afraid to make mistakes that they become shells of themselves. I see that happening with Sully right before our eyes.

@rfgiowa - Good point. The Hawks were out schemed. Anyone who's seen the Hawks play knew that running was their strength and the way to stop it is to stack the box. Low and behold, UCLA stacked the box and Iowa's response was to continue ramming it up the middle for 2 yard gains. The Iowa D wasn't out schemed, they were simply soft and didn't come to play. Way too many missed tackles.

@BonzoFury - You make it sound like 3-5 UCLA, who just hired an entirely new coaching staff, was some kind of juggernaut. This team beat Hawaii 16-13 and lost to lowly Minnesota.

@Rambler Hawk - Agreed that Anderson is as replaceable and forgettable as anyone Iowa has had at WR. Undersized, underspeeded, injury prone, and mediocre hands at best.

@Buffalo43 - I don't think KJ's underwhelming rushing performance was on him at all. The blocking was atrocious. That was apparent when Moulton came in and averaged 2.3 yards per carry. No one is gaining yards when they are hit in the backfield after the OL misses assignment after assignment.

I think you guys both had good points - I do think Moulton and Patterson hit the holes quicker and I think that is why Lester went with Moulton near the end. As Iowaslaw noted - it was a moot point as to which RB was in there since our OL was getting absolutely owned on most all plays….
