Everybody is Ganging Up on Trump. Will It Work?

I feel like Trump has hit his high and ads won't change it. With all the free air time exposure most people have made up their minds on him.

I can't see how his ads when and if he starts running them will help. He won't walk back and could not if he wanted to his many stupid positions.

That's the thing, with his followers he could just say, "No, I didn't say that," and they'd believe him.

In early September RCP average had Trump at 25.8% in Iowa and on December 8th he was at 25.7%.

Nationally on September 19th he was at 30.5% and on December 7th he was at 30%.

I really don't see him improving from these numbers giving the high negatives he has among Republicans.
Good post. But unless a number of counter-Trump people get out, it won't matter. 30% will win the nomination in a crowded field.

Mitt is clearly the best choice as a politician AND he could run on the fact that he was right about so many things the left ridiculed him on (see china hacking, see Russia geo-political foe, and others). Plus this go around I think he would lean towards more being himself vs taking two steps to the right of center.

In the end it will be Rubio, I think he is starting to gain some traction. Unfortunately I think he is mostly sizzle and no steak...seems like an air head to me.
Agree. Mitt should toss his hat in and run as the Governor of Massachusetts, that pragmatic centrist who believed in GW and gay rights and healthcare

True, but that won't change his numbers just keep them the same.

The field will shrink considerably after New Hampshire.

It's got to shrink fast. Rs set this up to lock in an early winner. It will all be over by early March if thing stay static. My dream is for a brokered convention. I've never witnessed a convention that mattered. Maybe that would be enough to actually split the party. Interesting times my friend.

Actually there still is around 20% undecided and I don't see much of that going to Trump given his negative numbers. Plus I do think it will drop fast after the first two for the simple reason that they all don't have the money Trump does and they won't get much fund raising.

It would be fun to see a convention that is more than a rubber stamp.

Many of us have been expecting Trump to fade. Has he finally hit his Dean Scream moment with his latest attacks on Muslims?

If they can't derail him now, will he emerge stronger, or will this mark his slide out of the top tier?

Needless to say (and as I've been warning) Cruz seems to be the major beneficiary of so much attention being spent on Trump.

Unfortunately no. The idiot keeps getting stronger with every dumb thing he says. He's like the Obama of the right.

Some good analysis by Rachel Maddow tonight that Trump may just be setting himself up to fail. He will have a built in excuse that the Republicans were mean to him so he had to run as an Independent. According to her logic Trump does not want the job. He loves the drama and attention now, but he knows the job is not for him. However, he must have that built in excuse for not winning. His ego is so huge he can't get into the primary season and have to start explaining defeats. Trump is doing okay in several early states, but the polling down the road through March shows deep flaws in his support. An Independent candidate Trump would fail quickly.
My question is when Trump then returns to reality TV and selling books has he so horribly harmed his brand that big advertisers may stay away rather than be painted as supporters of a Fascist.

Speaking of enormous egos......Rachel Maddow. She's probably right. Trump isn't really spending all that much money on the campaign, so if he goes as far as he can he hasn't lost much, personally.
However, I think he takes it all the way if he can.

But he could flesh out his positions with actual policies designed to reassure people. And he could focus on tearing down his competition - which might get him more bang for his buck.

As I have been saying for a while, nearly everybody has been giving Cruz a free pass - and he has been rising in the polls while expressing views and values that are, in many ways, scarier than Trump's.

"Just wait until you see my attack ads. They'll be great. You're going to love them."

Possible but nothing he has done so far points to that ability. He shows ideas but few details and eventually people outside his base will want to see those.

Trump has been running pretty much non stop attack ads courtesy of the media.

So I just flipped on CNN (I hate that I have started watching national news again...I blame the terrorist for this) and they have two guest talking about what Trump's statement on Muslims. Low and behold within 30 seconds of me starting to watch one guy was calling another a bigot full of bigoted ideas.

I think this debate strategy (the boy that cried racist) is beginning to backfire on the liberals. Its old, its tired, its played out. Please please please just defend your ideas and let people decide for themselves who they believe is a racist or not...these people, racist, have a tendency of self identifying themselves so we don't need the help seeing who is and isn't a bigot.
And yet we seem to have plenty of people who are more concerned about who calls someone a racist (or whatever) than who IS a racist.

You may be right that calling out racists, fascists and bigots is backfiring against liberals. But is it backfiring with decent people? I mean we know it's off-putting with the racists, fascists and bigots. But how worried should we be about that?

I'd rather be scolded for calling out a racist than let the racist get away with spewing his hate unchallenged.

You actually watch this sow? Good grief are you stupid?

However you shouldn't need to call someone out to beat them in the realm of ideas. It should be easy. Just put your ideas out there and make them look the fool, no need to call them a bigot or racist, people should be able to see that clearly on their own.

Again it has just gone too far and I think it is being used as a tactic for winning discussion before a real discussion can actually take place. Its a sad tactic IMO.

Wouldn't that be nice? If only it were true.

If you have just a little bit of faith in human decency you would believe it is true. I for one think it is but unfortunately it is the vocal minority (see the crazy right and left) that likes to create animosity where none really needs to exist.

There are lots of hateful people on this planet and they seem to get the biggest voice BUT I believe there are even more people who want the best for everyone. They keep their heads down working hard, advancing civilization, while caring about their family, friends and neighbors. The world is only as evil as you want to make it out to be.

I have been a long-time believer in the marketplace of ideas - that information democracy will bring the truth to light. That truth, justice and decency will triumph. There have always been breakdowns and exceptions, but on average that seemed to be true enough to play the game that way. Sadly, what we see today proves otherwise. So while I like what you are saying, I no longer think there's any basis for being that sanguine.

Sane people agree with what he said, this was not a Dean Scream moment most think exactly what Mr. Trump said however few have the balls to say it publically.

Trump has now basically punched his ticket to the White House.

Trump said that people should be excluded from entering the United States because of their religious beliefs. Do you honestly believe that is what all the white-wigged men wanted at the Constitutional Convention? I don't care for Trump's version of America. Nor should any sane person who can see past his own bigotry.

He has no chance in the general election, even if he does get the nomination.

It's interesting if you think about it. Trump supporters are actually assuring a Clinton win in '16.

I wish that were the truth, but history proves you wrong, over and over again. What's disgusting about the whole thing is that anyone who does call Trump the stupid, demagogic, bigoted, racist that he is just gets shouted down because we somehow don't want to "make America great again."

This is what some Dems/libs are saying about Bernie.

I wonder what would happen if the the nominees were Trump and Sanders.

Liberal Hero Jimah Carter did the same thing.

Liberal legend FDR did worse, he rounded up American citizens like cattle stripped them of their belongings, dignity and identity and placed them in camps under armed guard.

But that's different because their calling card has a jackass (donkey) on it right comrade?

It was wrong then and it's wrong now. Who was defending FDR again? No one? Thought so. Stop bring up something 70 friggin' years ago and let's talk about your racist, bigoted, piece of crap candidates.
