Excitement levels…

I’m at a 9……lots of good comments in this thread and I share much of the sentiment related by others….so, just a couple things:

Agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment about when football and basketball overlap!!!! That’s like heaven!

I love watching or looking at the development of individual players as well as the play of new guys…. I can’t wait to see how Dasonte, Josh Dix, and Payton Sandfort play this year…. I feel like Payton will show that he’s even better as a starter than a guy coming off the bench. I think Dix will take a significant step forward, and we need Bowen to make a major move to have the kind of season we hope for.

Can’t wait to see ALL of the newcomers but I think I’m most interested in seeing Dembele!

Being from Moline I've seen first hand how Brock and Owen play off each other, those two have been playing together for the last 4 years and are amazing to watch. They brought a first ever state title to a school that always has to buck the talent rich Chicago public and surrounding area schools. Those two are SOOOO underrated. I predict that before conference play begins Brock and Owen will both play a major roll in making Iowa the surprise team in the Big Ten.
You don't win the Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois without having a ton of talent and Owen who was first team all-state is, well.... amazing. Can't wait for the season to start!
Must have been a real treat to get to watch them play in HS. I remember getting to see Tim Dwight play in HS. BEST HS PLAYER I EVER SAW.

About a 2 honestly, this team on paper isn't very good and will be lucky to make the NIT. Who gets excited about maybe making the NIT? Nobody, that's who.

I lost a lot of respect for Fran when he did that creepy stare-down to the ref. Put me down for a "4".

9 for the women
7.5 for the men
5 for hawks FB at at Wisconsin tomorrow

I always get excited, but Lute broke my heart when he left and I’ll never have a 10 again.

I’m at a 7.5 because I think this team is being dismissed a bit as a non factor in the conference. Our younger players are very intriguing. Personally, I think they’ll surprise a number of teams this year with a decent chance to finish top 5 in the conference and make the NCAA tournament.

I’m disappointed that I had to give up my men’s season tickets this year due to time constraints but I suspect I’ll be back full time next season.

Iowa has been good on paper maybe 3 times under Fran and yet most of his seasons have turned out about the same.

Paper means nothing in college basketball because the majority of the factors are unknowns.

Usually people make judgments based on who left which is irrelevant. What matters is how well the players you do have are going to perform.

This season will probably be more or less the usual Fran campaign. High floor but capped ceiling.

Everything is going to run through Patrick this season so I’m at a 1.
If Patrick wasn’t on the team I would be at a 8.

I'm at a 7.625. It would be a 7.7, but then I remembered that the BB defense is the identical twin brother to the FB offense and that dampened my enthusiasm a bit.

The “good on paper” is well put.
I’m guessing we’ll get overly excited seeing the team early and then it’ll go sideways in conference. Or it’ll be ugly all year.
I just have reached a point where it’s no longer “appointment television” when they’re on.

I’m a 10. I love Iowa basketball and enjoy watching it more than football. Fran always produces an exciting and entertaining style of ball and I genuinely like the guys he recruits.

This season is one of the more unpredictable years in recent memory, but Fran has consistently produced top half of the conference, tournament teams with All Big players and I kinda expect this year will be no different. One of these years we will break through to the 2nd round . . . Right?

Fran didn't do it with a team that had four NBA bound players Garza, Keegan, Kris, and Weezy on it at same time, so I would say he probably won't make a NCAA sweet16 because defense is an afterthought.

probably around an 8 right now. I enjoy seeing the Hawks play men’s basketball. Fran has to have a NCAA tournament run at some point, law of large numbers and all. Maybe this is the year?

2, I’m way past done with Fran at this point.

What has it been, 23 years since a single sweet 16? 12 of which have been under Fran?

It will never happen with Fran, combine that with his antics and history of nepotism playing his kids over NBA draft picks recently….and I’m as ready to move on in basketball as I am in football.

I'm always a 10 for anticipation and loyalty to the Hawkeyes. I love basketball. There is so much talent spread out among all the teams in the country that the "winners" who make the second round or farther into the tourney are the teams that do all the little things well, primarily defense. We have a lot of depth this year and that can help a defense, because teams that rely on a couple of stars don't want those players fouling out, so they are more cautious when defending. Those two Moline kids are winners. A lot of our star players in the past played on high school teams that did poorly in the state tourneys. I believe that Bohannon (0-4 in tries to make state) and several other Iowa multi-year starters got knocked off in the first round of the state tourneys or in the substates. I see the Moline kids as definite rotation players and possible starters by the time the season is in full swing. The exhibition game means nothing except that we aren't very fast. I also have reservations about Bowen as a starter.

Could we please stop pretending that Garza and Wieskamp are good enough to get regular NBA minutes? It's disingenuous. During his tenure, Fran has had one player with enough skill and athleticism to crack an NBA rotation and that is Keegan Murray. Perhaps Kris Murray will increase that number to two (although at the moment he is buried on the bench of a probably lousy Portland team). Garza, Cook, Weezy, Uthoff and Marble have all technically made it onto an NBA court but they aren't "NBA Players" the same way that, say, Georges Niang or Monte Morris or Keegan Murray are. If we are going to throw around the "Fran can't even win with NBA players" argument we should keep in mind that he has really only had a player like that for one season (Keegan's final year). Now if you want to criticize Fran's inability to win head-to-head recruiting battles with other P5 programs (hence the lack of guys that can crack NBA rotations), that is fair game. But the last coach we had that could regularly land that kind of talent was George Raveling.

Probably won’t make it to any games and will watch when it works with my schedule. My expectations are as low as they’ve been in a long time. No Garza, No Murray’s, there is no main attraction right now.

If Fran gets this group to the upper half of the league I’ll shocked.

Hmmmm. So, when they got Garza, a big slow guy nobody had ever heard of you were excited. Also, when they got the Murray's, 2 players with absolutely no attention from anyone and whom those on this board swore were a waste of space you were excited. Got it.......... Yeah. Talk about a rewrite.

But none of those 4 were "NBA-ready" "one-and-done" players. They developed over time, some earlier than others.

With so many new faces, I'm excited to see how each plays and how, hopefully, it all comes together. I'm hoping Fran is willing to give PT to the guys who give us the best chance to win against quality competition, regardless of age or experience. I really like what I've seen and heard so far about our 4 freshmen.

I would say a 4. The Big10 is loaded this year and once again Iowa will go where the 3 point shot goes. And until they play some semblance of defense, I will never be above a 5.
I'm kind of surprised by how many times I've seen the take "the big ten is loaded" the past couple days. Outside of the top 2 or 3 teams I think most of these Big Ten teams have a ton of question-marks. There's a reason as to why the Big Ten only has 3 teams ranked in the pre-season. I'd call the B12, SEC and BE loaded before I'd refer to the B10 as that this year.

You’re really arguing that guys who have gotten multiple NBA contracts aren’t NBA players? THAT’S disingeuous.

We’ve all analyzed Fran’s lack of NCAA success to death, I don’t want to rehash. I’d say the better point is that even though that team had a lot of NBA talent, most of it wasn’t fully developed yet. Plus injuries.

not very. I'm not thrilled with structure of the team. I'd say why but it's a dead horse.

Looking forward to seeing them in person next Friday. In for the FB game and thought what the hell. Great seats. Row 6 close to half court. Excited to see the new faces as well.
