I still cant for the life of me figure out why UI didn't reach out to neighboring towns to see if they could have had trick or treating on Friday night instead of Saturday. I know a lot of people that didn't go to the game and seems like it would have been a pretty simple fix when they announced a 2:30 game. Am I crazy or just annoyed?

Crazy, whole towns aren't going to change trick or treat just so a small number can attend the Iowa game. There is life outside of football for some. How many do you know would have went, but decided not to because of trick or treat?

Well if I was the Mayor of Anamosa I'd have done it. Might have given some prison guards the night off too since pretty much all them drug users was watching the dang game.

My brother-in-law took my 5 y.o. nephew to his very first Hawkeye game on Saturday, and they were about an hour to 90 minutes late in getting started trick or treating. He (my nephew) had plenty of time to load up on candy after getting back home and changing into his costume. There may be some that stayed home, but unless trick or treating is a huge family tradition for some people (?), then I know at least some folks didn't really care if they missed some or all of it to go to a Hawkeye game.

It's up to the towns to set the trick or treat night. Can you say "reaching" to find fault with UI?

Trick-or-treating should be on Thursday or Friday everywhere when Halloween is a Saturday night. Unless kids are now purists about Halloween. They sure don't seem to mind opening Christmas presents early. Those sneaky little non-contributors.

Seriously, now people are bitching about something like this?

Little of both.It is not up to the Athletic Dept to get involved in this kind of stuff it is a CITY matter.

This is a super idea. The athletic dept should also get everyone to move Black Friday so fans can watch or go to the Nebby game instead of going shopping.

And, then, they should drop turkeys from a helicopter during pre-game!

Iowa City city hall claimed that they decided on October 17th that trick or treating would be the night of the 31st. That was prior to ABC moving the game to 2:30. IC claimed it was to late to inform the public. If anyone failed, it was the city with their lame excuse. Between news outlets and social media this could have easily been done.

If we make a new's day bowl can they also move the new years celebrations all over the world so people aren't too tired to watch? While their at it have them change how the weather is for games so it's always sunny and 70 with little to no wind.

Is that some of the same people that work for the UI Marketing Dept?

While we're at it, we should push for making Christmas be celebrated on a Friday every year.

This.

I am sure if the UI and IC, Coralville, NL wanted to change it, it could have been done fairly easily. I guess I just don't understand why they didn't. There were at least 30 people in my neighborhood alone that didn't go down from NL that normally go to every game.

Why do you continue to blame UI when they have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT?

The boy and I just left the game early in the 4th to get back up to NL to get started by 6. There is still enough diabetes to take off a few feet in my kitchen.

So you are telling me the UI thought it was a good idea to lose out on thousands of potential revenue for one of their departments because they didn't want to pick up the phone to the local chambers to see if they could switch the times.

Actually, the more I think about it, someone needs fired at the UI.

There are a bazillion opportunities to trick/treat these days, not sure it is a great "excuse", but to each, his own.

Is this a real concern? Halloween actually fell on a Saturday and someone is all up in arms that that the Athletics department didn't ask all of the surrounding area to move the trick or treating time because they wanted to go to the game? Yes, princess, we'll be sure to get your plans and schedule the time a holiday falls on gameday.

Wow..

Agree 100%!! Why anyone is worried about trick or treating versus a Top 10 football team is ridiculous. Trick or treating is stupid. It is unsafe and promotes childhood obesity and when adults wear costumes too, you know that our world is a mess. Walking to my car after the game, I saw several groups of kids out so if your priorities are gathering useless candy, then go for it. I guess it is no different than the way children (and parents) act at parades to gets some free candy! The University Homecoming parade had as many parents as children in the middle of the street (yes, the University marching band had to narrow their path to get through the people trying to fetch candy). Adults near us asked children and their parents to back up so that senior citizens who were not able to stand could see from their seats that they had arrived 30 minutes early for and the children/parents ignored this request. One of the offending parties was Bond Shymansky, UI volleyball coach. It was a disgrace and the senior citizens left early.

Christ, I hope you aren't one of my neighbors. Do you live in Deerfield? I may come egg your house

Des Moines and most of the suburbs have treat or treat on Oct. 30, due to a problem with vandalism on Halloween in the 1930's. Yes, then. It was proposed that Oct. 30 be called "Beggars' Night" and kids go out that night for treats. First they do a trick (mainly riddles or jokes ) and then get their treats. Halloween night is for those who do bad things (and get caught). Seems to work. You wouldn't believe how many people move into the area and complain about the date. And the riddles and jokes are fun, you can tell new kids,f they don't have one.

I can understand an 85 year tradition, but OP was whining that athletics didn't do anything when a game fell on Halloween and he had to make a choice. Interesting fact though, I didn't know that. Funny how living only an hour and a half away, things can be so much different :)

It was actually a pretty intelligent ploy, partnering with the Children's Hospital to fight juvenile diabetes by attempting to deprive kids of sugar by keeping them at Kinnick. I think someone deserves a promotion!

I've lived in the area for 30 years and still don't like it. Trick or treating is supposed to be on October 31....period. I also tell the kids I don't need to hear a joke.

And another thing.....GET OFF MY LAWN!!

Normally no not a concern as it was/is personal choice as whether or not to go. Thing is though, it wasn't a sellout....actually far from it and my points attest to why that was the case. If you live in this area you know the local towns cater to what the UI wants in almost every instance; hard to believe they wouldn't have done so here if asked.

Again, not a huge deal by any stretch but if you are 8,000 tickets shy of a sellout and your team is in the top 10 and hasn't lost a game, you should look at all the options why that is the case.

Don't lump me in with this idiot, please. I got home after the game AND waiting for traffic to clear a bit and there were still a bunch of rug rats out running around. There was plenty of time to do both. People didn't go to the game because it was supposed to be 45 and raining and we were playing a crappy team nobody cared about.
