State health officials are warning Iowans against consuming Diamond Shruumz-brand mushroom edibles after joining a list of several other states with individuals who have become sick — some in critical condition — after consuming the brand’s gummies, ice cream cone-shaped edibles and chocolate bars.

At least 26 people in 17 states have fallen ill after eating Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Chocolate Bars and other mushroom edibles, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. At least 16 individuals have been hospitalized, including several who had seizures or lost consciousness and needed to be placed on ventilators. People also developed high blood pressure and abnormal heart rates as well as confusion, sleepiness, nausea and vomiting.

The FDA has issued a warning advising consumers not eat, sell or serve any flavor of Diamond Shruumz-brand chocolate bars, cones or gummies, and should discard them.

The products are sold online and commonly are available at consumable hemp retailers as well as tobacco and vape shops.

A news release from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services states individuals in Iowa each reported consuming one of the following Diamond Shruumz products: cookies, cream chocolate bars and fruit cereal-flavored bars. The products were purchased through a retail store in Eastern Iowa, according to the agency.

A department spokesperson did not immediately respond to a message Tuesday seeking details about the retail location where the products were sold, how many Iowans were sickened, the severity of their illness and any enforcement actions.

In a news release, the agency states the products are considered dietary supplements and are not regulated and cannot be recalled by the state.

The FDA says it and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working with poison control centers and state health agencies to investigate the cause of the illnesses. The FDA said it has been in conversations with the manufacturer about a possible voluntary recall, but discussions were ongoing.

Any Iowan experiencing severe symptoms after ingesting the products should visit the emergency room, the Health and Human Service Department said.

The FDA advises anyone sickened after eating mushroom edibles should seek medical attention and contact the national Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222. The agency also urged retailers not sell or distribute the products.

The New York Times reports mushroom chocolates have grown popular in recent years, as companies capitalize on research around — and consumer interest in — psilocybin. However, there is little regulatory oversight of the products, and most are not independently tested to confirm their contents.

As the product and their flavors may appeal to children and teens, the FDA advises parents and caregivers to consider warning their children about the dangers of the products and take extra caution to avoid them being consumed by youth.

Retailers should not sell or distribute any flavor of Diamond Shruumz-brand products, according to the FDA. And retailers should hold the product in a secure location until additional instructions can be provided on how to return or safely dispose of the product, the FDA said.

Health care providers should report illnesses associated with the products to their local health department and/or the Poison Help line.
