Federal regulators said Monday that they plan to require recreational drone users to register their aircraft with the government for the first time in an attempt to restore order to U.S. skies that have been invaded by rogue flying robots.

U.S. officials said they still need to sort out the basic details of the registration system but that they concluded they needed to take swift action to cope with a surge in sales of inexpensive, simple-to-fly drones that are increasingly interfering with regular air traffic.

Here is where this will fall apart. What are they going to define as a "Drone"?

First they came for our thermal nuclear warheads, then they came for our anthrax, then our planes and tanks and artillery. Now they come for our drones. Soon they will come for our glocks and we will be left holding our cocks.

A remotely operated aircraft

Not real complicated.

They need to start stiffening the penalties for people who operate these close to airports and the idiots who like to point their laser pens at planes.

Radio controlled helicopters and airplanes? Those hobbyists have been around for years.

Agree with you on the proximity to airports piece.

And how will registering your drones translate into a sky less crowded with private drones?

It's only a matter of time before the government will be picking winners and losers. And we might even agree.

Do we want crooks using drones to act as lookouts? Do we want the mentally ill using drones to peek in our windows or stalk our daughters or girlfriends? Do we want the air above our football field blanketed with drones bearing cameras? Do we want armed drones shooting annoying neighborhood pets, hunting for deer, or accidentally shooting hunters?

And those are just some of the ways I plan to use my fleet of drones. ;)

Lots of reasons why we might want to restrict the private use of drones. Registering them seems like the camel nose (not toe) under the tent flap.

You sound like republicans talking about Muslims.

So this will apply to people who are RC enthusiasts. Because suddenly they are deemed as "potentially dangerous" to the airways?

Registration is not a judgement that a person is potentially dangerous, it's just a way of keeping track of things so the dangerous ones can be taken out of the pool of the responsible.

But they will likely have to register yes.

I'm surprised someone hasn't used one of these to commit terror already. Maybe ol' Prime is just a little too out of the box thinking at times, but I could see some serious damage being done if people got creative.

Yeah, I'm more worried about long distance drones being used to bomb people. I'd have to imagine that it wouldn't be terribly difficult to do eh?

That is an interesting thought honestly. Does say the NFL have the legal right to clear the airspace above their stadiums?

Otherwise what's to prevent drone operators from getting a view of the game without watching TV or paying for a ticket?

Are there laws about these things at all?

The window thing is covered by our current peeping tom laws. I believe armed drones are covered by our current regulations concerning the use of firearms.

But flying over an outdoor sports event to avoid paying for it or something. . . Is that covered?
