Ferentz: GoAT?

In Jones days there were not the separation of teams like there is today. No Division I, FBS, etc. Teams like Yale were big powers still. He dominated in his time and that is the way to look at it in my mind. Its not just undefeated, its the winning streak, the score differential, etc.

When Howard Jones started at Iowa, the NFL didn't even exist, The Great War was taking place, the sporting color barrier was 30 years from falling, etc.

Apples and oranges.

Actually Duke Slater was one of Jone's greatest players...Not sure what difference the NFL makes.

Yes, different eras for all of them. Jones was the most dominant in his era.

I think the best Ferentz team would defeat the best Fry team but also think Fry did what many people was impossible when he made Iowa a football power. IMHO Fry had the toughest job but Ferentz with the 3 straight top 10 rankings had the best results.

I still don't see what any of that has to do with what I posted. Have you yet to read the records of the teams we beat?

Maybe I haven't made this clear enough, but I don't wish to tear down Howard Jones. He is certainly in the pantheon and did a really good job here. I'm just saying the stats indicate that his fabled unbeaten seasons came against some generally weak opposition. And telling me Yale was a power doesn't cover the fact that their record wasn't that awesome, or that they were the only winning team Iowa beat, or that Iowa only played one upper half finisher in the conference.

Ferentz and Fry often played generally weak opposition. Lots of terrible early season opponents

Ferentz's seasons after the first 3 are about all the same with little things determining if its a 7-5 team or a 10-2 team. The scores are about all close.

Jones appeared to be a fantastic coach, but his last year was 1923, with that logic you should include Alfred Bull b/c he had the highest winning percentage in 1896 followed by John Chalmers in 1905.....not to discredit any of them but lets stick with at least semi-common era.
1) Evi
2) Fry and Ferentz tied (for now)

I guess some things have never changed. Just the names. Instead of Knox, we beat up on North Texas.

Jones definitely deserves credit for beating the teams he should. Some coaches, even on this GOAT discussion, haven't done that as much as we'd like. Although so far this year, we've soon two old school Jones/Fry-style beatdowns over NT and NW. Here's to four more before stomping on those upstarts to the West!

Bull was here one year and Chalmers three. Win percentage doesn't mean too much for such a small sample.

80's football ≠ 00's football ≠ 50's football ≠ 20's football
Fry and KF are closest, but they're all in very different times.

Jones is as closer in time to Evy than KF is to Evy. Food for thought.
Yes this is true, however; most football scholars would agree that the modern era of football started in the 1950's or shortly after WWII. You see before that time players played both sides and sometime after WWII teams began to "platoon" and have 11 different players playing on both sides of the ball...hence it is easier to compare Evy to FRY and KF that it is to to compare Jones to EVY, because the game was so so much different before what is known as "common era"
