The Hawkeyes aren't happy about the departures of Kaleb Brown and Leshon Williams, but either way, they're moving forward.

"Not to be callous, but if a player isn't playing, it's not like you lose anything that way," Kirk Ferentz said.

KF talking out of both sides of his mouth. He is the first to talk about how important it is to get practice reps and losing a really good offensive guy, should not be downplayed by this coach.

Everyone on here had been saying Brown was a bust and that we are deep at RB. Williams has been hurt and for a good while. I can see why they both want to move on and play somewhere else. That somewhere else will probably not be in the power 4 however. But still, I hope they do well.
Williams will absolutely get a P4 job, He is a proven big time back that made plays behind terrible OLs and an offense with no passing game

You can’t worry over things that have happened, Eliot. There are games to be played with players who will be there to play. #4 is leaving because #2 is undeserving of his playing time? #3 is leaving because he is such a great route runner with great hands?
Guys come and guys go… do you really think this changes Iowa’s football fortunes this season?

When I first saw the word Kaleb and transferring in a headline I thought it was Kaleb Johnson. I wonder if he'd be fazed by that?

Yes, all you have to do is look at Williams carries the last half of last year. Every team knew Deacon could not do shit in the passing game but Leshon busted the long td at Wisky and the big run late against nebby to set up the winning FG.

I am sorry to see Leshon go but there are only so many carries out there and Moulton and Jazz are ahead of him now.

Good luck Leshon. I have no idea what is up with Kaleb B. He couldnt find playing time at OSU and should be a star receiver at Iowa.

Its hard to say. Lester came right out and said that Brown wasn't picking up the offense. Time missed being banged up whatever he made it clear that even when they ran plays for him as a target he was frequently running the wrong route or off on the timing. Maybe there's a reason (besides just other better players) he wasn't playing at OSU.

I am not saying he did not contribute or saying he was not a good player. I am saying he has 1 year left to play and has been injured awhile now and even before that was getting passed up on the depth chart. Not just sliding to number 2 but to where he was fighting for spot 3 or 4. So I doubt any higher profile place then Iowa is going to pick him up. Yeah, he may get a gig with a power 4 team, but the writing is kind of on the wall. I am just being realistic and not trying to dog on anyone. Like I said he was a good Hawk and I wish him well. The Hawks need to focus on nexts years roster while finishing this year strong. We are losing a ton, so we are going to have to hit the portal hard and RB is the least of our concerns.

He's right. Iowa has not been hurt by the portal because the people who left weren't playing anyway. Right now QB1, QB2, and one of their best defensive players came from the portal. It's been a net benefit.

Williams is a good back , Some Team who is hit hard by graduation or has a very young RB room will grab him up and I am willing to bet He is in the top 2 RB rotation of that P4 next year. He is not a fumbler , is good in pass protection , can catch out of the backfield and can break one, We lose at Wisconsin last Year without Williams , Coaches see those same game tapes all of us see plus. . PS I said a P4 will grab Him , You inserted the " higher place" destination school qualification to the argument. A P4 can be a better or worse football school than Iowa .

Well we got hurt when Charlie Jones left and even Tyrone Tracy who made an NFL squad. Those are two pros who left our program, both wide receivers, that is pretty bad on Kirk's watch.

Maybe Brown wasn’t picking up the offense cause he sees how shit it is every day in practice

It’s not like other WR are tearing it up and he’s feeling anxious sitting on the sideline

So if he is not going to a higher destination and you agree with that, all we are both saying is he is probably going to a lower destination. I could see someone like North Dakota or South Dakota making him a better offer then a P4 program where he might be fighting for a #2 spot. That's what I am saying. It's his last year and he is going to want to play, not be added as depth to a P4 program where he still may have to battle for even the #2 spot. Unless you think there is a P4 school out there who just is not going to have a starter by next fall who is as good as he is. (and they have to decide that this winter) I mean obviously he is leaving because he wants to play his last year and I would suspect he will go where that is almost certain. Which again is probably not a P4 school

Both second string at Iowa.
Yes, and that is the problem. Early on Tracy would be daring going over the middle but he lost that the year before he transferred. I think he just wasnt getting targets and maybe didnt think it was worth it to have his head taken off. I dont know.

But as many others have said, Kirk just doesnt seem to evaluate players very well once they are on campus

He wanted to play running back.....

Actually, it seems like their attitudes were crap & they simply didn't want to be there. See the parts in red below.

And Kaleb Brown got beat out by a Northwestern transfer & a true freshman.

the full text of the tweet:

Kirk Ferentz on the departures of Leshon Williams and Kaleb Brown:

"The bottom line is this, not to be callous, but if a player is really not playing, it's not like you lose anything that way. And then the other part of it, to fall back on a line from Mike Tomlin, you don't want hostages on your team. Again, it doesn't do anybody any good, especially the individuals, to be in an environment where they're not enthused to be there. It's just not good for anybody. So I just wish the guys well, and I hope they find happiness wherever they do go. I really mean that. Because I want all of our guys to be successful. Right now, our focus is on the guys we're coaching every day."

Remember when Tim Lester said that Kaleb wasn't running the routes correctly?

That's why we are seeing Gill & Vander Zee.

you might be right. But he isn't as good as the 2 guys in front of him. Not even close. He is not a game breaker and never has been outside of a run against Wisconsin.

They can't transfer until the semester can they? So I guess their tuition is paid til then . Do they have to* do anything for the rest of the semester--like be on the practice squad or something.?

This is Brown's 3rd year in college & he got beat out and outworked by a true freshman.

Next year it will be 3 colleges in 4 years for Brown. Yikes.

Maybe he shouldn’t have gotten an OWI before the season if he was so committed to Iowa’s football program. 🤔
