Strange to start the game with those two. Announcers said B. Ferentz wanted to get them more in the mix. Why not start mixing them in on the 3rd or 4th series?

It's a small thing, but sends a message that even if you're the best you might not get the start. Hawks need to start fast and set an early tone. Having IKM cough the ball up on the first series did the opposite.

I am guessing it was a minor penalty for Wadley.

I kind of like Toren early with Wadley as the second RB. Bring the hammer out early, then bring the jitterbug.

They had 10 carries and Wadley had 23 for the game. Through 3 qtrs Wadley had 19 & no fumbles and they had 3 and a fumble. Wadley is our best player and we need to keep him above 20 carries. They had most of the carries in the 4th qtr.

I think the split in carries was fine, we were only up 8 going into Q4, I certainly didn’t want to limit his carries anymore than that. I do wish we were up by 2+ TD’s much earlier, because I agree that more carries for the backups would be great. I think Brian was not expecting to be trailing with 4 mins left in the half when he talked about giving other backs more carries.

My issue is why not start with Wadley and get him going, then bring in 2nd/3rd? Why start with 2nd/3rd in the first series, then bring in Wadley for the next 4 series? It’s weird he didn’t start when it was clear he was the favorite back until the game was put away.

I was guessing that they were trying to rest Wadley, and were hoping to use the backups much more extensively. However, the fumble, then we were quickly put on our heels and in for a battle, and we had to use Wadley because he was the trusted option.

Either way, Wadley balled out. Has to be good for his confidence moving forward. No injuries, plus a bye week. Hopefully Iowa comes back fresh and puts up another 45-16 game.

Ya know...I hope this was the thinking, but color me sceptical!

Starting is a big thing, was a message being sent? Like “we are a team”? And we are not above sitting you? Trying to motivate him? I have no idea, but I found it very odd not to start him. As others have said putting in the backups anywhere else in the game wouldn’t raise any eyebrows at all.

Unless I'm told otherwise (Wadley was being disciplined) this just adds to my belief that our coaches are idiots. No other coaching staff would put their backups in at the start of the game to get them more in the mix. Smart coaches put in the best early, get a sizable lead and then bring in the backups. But business as usual for our staff.

Wadley is far better suited out of the shotgun. He has some of his best runs on delayed hand offs. He is best in the two minute offense and catching the ball in space. As much as I love Wadley with his big play potential, I would like to see him with as many receptions as carries. Toren Young however is built to run behind a fullback. As is Butler. Not saying we need to see Wadley less during games, but in a different role than the featured back.

I love Wadley with the ball in open space as much as anyone but i get a shake my head feeling when he speaks. Bit of a rough interview. Almost a DJK cockiness maybe? Maybe im looking into it farther than i should.

High stepped into breakfast line
Watch the highlight shows and nearly all of the long TD runs they show, the back does something that is just as much celebratory as his high steps. I keep waiting for another flag to know where that ref is each week.

His high step yesterday was to set up the two dbacks thinking he was going to turn inside then keep it outside to the goal line.

I see so many worse celebrations not called that it is a joke his high stepping TD vs NT was even called. That crew was in look at me mode all day.

Regarding playing Young and IKM, you always go with your starting tailback to start, build a lead, then work the other backs into the ballgame. Gotta get IKM back on the field after that fumble too.

Don't know what that starting rotation was about, but Wadley is the best player on the team, and Iowa is lucky to have him. All considered, he gives very cordial interviews, always credits other players, and knows Iowa is best as a team. Putting him in the same sentence with DJK is ridiculous, and I'd imagine insulting to AW.

Wadley would have scored either the 1st or 2nd down play. Giant hole that Toren didn’t get through quite quick enough. I could be wrong, but that’s what I recall

Calm down, it was Illinois.

No you are the idiot for believing our coaches made a wise decision starting our back ups. Illinois showed they were capable of taking advantage of the blunder.

You don't know why? Late? Attitude? Practice habits? Classroom? Great thing about Iowa coaches is they keep a lot of this in house where it should be kept! Accountability and responsibility - remember these 2 words! They mean something at Iowa Football - maybe not to you - but they do to the program and young men in the program!

Please share if you know something. The announcers on tv said it was because they wanted to get the backups more involved.

You cannot rely on what the announcers say. For example, in the previous game they said Rugamba had been benched for poor play vs. PSU when in fact he was injured.
