I'm from Texas and a die hard Longhorn fan (sorry for Greg Davis). My buddy is from Iowa and has been trying to get me to go to a game for years. It looks like I'll finally get the opportunity this week against Wisky. My Iowa buddy hasn't been to a game in probably 10 years, so his game day knowledge might be dated. It'll be me, him, and my other buddy from Texas. We'll fly to Cedar Rapids from DFW on Friday night and will be staying in Iowa City.

If you were us (3 heterosexual guys in their mid-30s), what would your weekend look like? Best drinking spots on Friday night? Best tailgating spots on Saturday? Any can't miss places on game day?

I just did the same trip for the ISU game. I hadn’t been to a game since 2008 & it was my Colorado friend’s first trip to Kinnick/IC. We had a blast!

We drank at the Clinton Street Social Club (I think), Joe’s Place, Buchar Tavern (?), Deadwood, & ate a great meal at Graze.

Long story short Iowa City’s a blast on Gameday! Street gyro & bahn mi were delicious also.

Hit the ped mall Friday night - Airliner, Sports Column, check with the locals as to the best places to go for drinking and having a good time. There are a few craft beer houses you can hit, south of downtown or out in Coralville. A few bars to hit on the way there - Vine and Wig n Pen. Uber everywhere so you don’t take the chance of driving. Cops are a tad excessive in the IC area.

Saturday if you don’t have a specific tailgate, hit the Hamburg Inn for breakfast or Blueberry Cafe around the corner from it then hit the ped mall again.

I’d then head up toward the stadium with a twelve pack or two and hit the stadium area and just hit a tailgate along the way as Hawk fans will welcome you to join them if you tell them your visiting from Texas. Or go to Stella’s and eat and drink there before the game. You’ll have a good time! Enjoy and Go Hawks!

Well at least I recognize Joe's Place and Deadwood. Is there still a bar by Deadwood named Sheepshead or something like that.

Bars for mid thirties in iowa city.
Mickey's, Joe's place the airliner, Dublin underground, tcb, donneleys, the mill.

There's a bunch of other great bars in the area as well.

Not that I remembered. I was pretty blasted all weekend so I’m not the best resource, lol.

I did just remember a place that had great bloody marys & breakfast tacos, Pullman’s.

Great bloodys & mimosas

It was fun for me to remember the bars. The Vine, Woodstock, The Mill, Airliner. I played in a softball league at the Home plate Lounge in North Liberty.

The guy is kindly, and harmlessly, asking for recommendations from Iowa fans and you are knocking his home state. Shame on you for representing the Iowa fan base this way. Go away.
the dude is a TPB fan.....clearly he's not as up tight as you ;)

Im assuming you're at least 30 of you're staying at the Marriott. I'd avoid downtown IC as its a mess on Friday's in Sept. College kids are back and wayyyyy out of control by 9. You'll find most people in our age range at 30hop and Big Grove.

30Hop rooftop is great for drinks and just a block from your hotel. The food their isn't the best IMO.

I'd hit Big Grove in IC for food, local beers and nice scenery ;) and then hit 30hop to finish the night.

Tailgating? As close to Kinnick as you can get. Not an easy place to navigate if you don't have anyone with you with IC experience.

Wherever you're staying (if you don't have a hotel booked in IC/Coralville already, you might have to stay in Cedar Rapids), Uber to downtown Iowa City on Friday night. Put Old Capitol Mall as your destination on the app. Then just wander the pedestrian mall (you can't miss it). If you want a hang, try Donnelly's or The College Billiard. If you want a club, try the Union. If you want a sports bar club with pitchers, walk to Dubuque and go to Sports Column. There's Joe's on Iowa Ave for a hang/sports bar. I always recommend The Vine but that's not exactly downtown. There's a Vine in Coralville, but I mean the real one on Gilbert/Prentiss. The Vine is my favorite bar in IC. Low lights, jukebox music, a lot of TVs, wings and cheap drinks ($1 apple pie shots and cheapish "Vine Steins" of a decent Quad Cities brew).

On Saturday, since it's a night game, you don't have to snort Adderall at 5 am. Wake up when you wake up and go catch the early games at Sports Column or Brother's or Joe's downtown. When you want to go tailgate, walk/Uber across Burlington to the west side of the river. The main tailgating drag is Melrose. Walk down any of the alleys and find a house/yard party with people you think you can get along with. Pack a styrofoam cooler with beer/ice/fifth of your favorite poison. Wander Melrose. Be generous with your beer/liquor and someone will offer you free food. Or buy something from the vendors along Melrose.

Pace yourself, it's a night game against Wisconsin and many people will be getting arrested. You don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the person next to you. Don't pee in the woods by the train tracks, that's the easiest way to get arrested. Aim to get to the stadium gates about 10-15 minutes before kickoff. If you're wearing jeans, it's easy to sneak airplane bottles of liquor in your socks. You can also bring in a sealed bottle of water.

It's also okay to smoke weed off an empty beer can if someone has weed and no one brought paraphernalia. Smoking off aluminum doesn't kill you if itls occasional. It is illegal, so make sure you have a designated lookout.

On Sunday, I recommend the Newman Catholic student center on Clinton (just north of downtown a couple). You will need to repent. Then go catch your flight.

Edit: Feel free to wear a UT cap or have a tattoo or something, but wear a black or yellow shirt. No red allowed unless you're a legit bucky fan (they're also welcome). Wave to the kids. Have fun.

If drinking downtown on Saturday and walking towards the stadium, don't have an open container until you get past Riverside Drive (I think), or you will get an open container ticket.

Talk to the students who will be walking this route. They know the drill.

Also, welcome to the Hawkeye state! I spent six years of my life in DFW trying to watch Hawkeye games anywhere I could find them. You'll be at ground zero inside Kinnick and you'll never forget it if you're a fan. It'll be electric.

I wish I appreciated getting to walk into the writer's workshop house more at the time. I was stoned and just getting an English minor. Handing in a piece to my TA who was accepted into the Iowa Writer's Workshop. What a stupid kid.

I know those feels. I used to be in the Navy and the many things I'll never see again gets kinda depressing being stuck back in Waterloo.
