Folks in Chicago pissed as hell with the Lovie Smith Hire

KF has a reputation and history at the college level. LS is starting from scratch. Not yet knowing who his assts might be, but unless he gets guys with many high school connections, it's going to be a tough pull for him, imo.

We'll see. Illinois isn't exactly loaded for bear right now. That's a 3-4 year rebuild, at least. Outside of name recognition, Lovie Smith will need a really, really good staff to succeed.

He's off to a good start.

And more importantly, he doesn't have to make us a power to be viewed as a HUGE improvement over the crap we've dealt with the last several years.

Agree with the 3-4 year rebuild...KF had to do the same thing. Btw Lovie just hired a new OC (Garrick McGee) way from Louisville. Louisville just signed two 4 star WR's and a 4 star QB in 2016. I can hardly remember the last time we signed one 4 star WR.

The few times I have seen LS interviewed, he sure seemed like a very nice and humble guy. I agree with the premise that he will be a big improvement over the recent past.

He gets the right assts, he's going to upset a few teams by the second or third year. If he keeps a few highly rates guys from other B1G powers, I am thinking this benefits Iowa.

I don't see how this benefits Iowa. Lovie may not build Illinois into the next national power but he will turn out a quality team that will turn into a difficult win for Iowa. He'll turn out decent teams that won't beat themselves and he'll be a good representative for the school. Those two things will give him the time he needs to build that program. The West just got a whole lot deeper.

Nailed it !

Wow lot of people here assuming Lovie will be so successful and able to recruit. Not sure why most think he'll automatically upgrade recruiting being out of the game for 20 years with out even having his staff in place yet. Until he does I'll be a bit skeptical. Guy was successful with the bears cause he coached Urlacher, Briggs and Tillman in their primes with Peppers and he was a good defensive coach and they had good special teams (i.e. Hester). But any Bears fan can tell you it was painful watching his inept offensives.
Quotes from 4 star WR Isaiah Robertson Chicagoland recruit " I mean I was actually super surprised. I was with Houston Griffith when it happened and he told me and I couldn't believe it. It's definitely a huge positive for Illinois". " Whenever you have a coach with a high profile like Lovie Smith, it always makes the school that much more intriguing". Robertson has offers from Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and others.

So how long do you think Lovie stays? If he sucks, he probably gets the hook after a few years. If he succeeds, does he stay or try for another NFL job?

He might be just saying this, but he told Whitman he wanted this to be his last job and that he needed to be reassured that Illinois would actually invest enough to make it possible for him to capitalize on some of the resources we have.

I'm sure shutting down Illini athletics would do wonders for the economy.
Due to the fact the state is flat broke. He Gets 21 mil. over 6 years. Yet cant pay CPS teachers and are closing schools all over the place not to mention the Illinois directional schools have no money. Good day for talk radio here in town. The bad blood and resentment is fun to listen to due to the fact I hate the cryin illini. Also look for him to raid the Chicago burbs high schools for assistant coaches. His plan is to lock down the Chicago area. We shall see.......
Don't understand what the University of Illinois has to do with Chicago and closing schools???

I agree, as a true Hawk fan Lovie and his staff do have a little more merit than KF and the Iowa staff. In a few yrs I think we will be singing a different tune.

Lol... Other than the 3 million in student fees and 880,000 in school funds, is that what you meant to say? Or are you following the state of ill annoys creative financing plan?
Do you really think KF sits in living rooms kissing kids and parents asses ? Lovie will make Illinois football program better like it or not.
I, for one, am assuming no recruiting ability. But I do expect Smith to instill basic football competency into a fairly talented but disorganized squad. Illinois will be better on that alone. If, and that's the big if, he can improve the talent, then they're a serious threat. But they'll be decent even without it.
I remember the Illinois freshman RB fumbling in the 4th to seal the win for the Hawks Illinois not that bad of team and with Lovie and NFL staff they will be better. I am worried!!!!

Probably a good idea not to under estimate Lovie. He's a pretty good coach. Just look at the Bears after he left. The Tampa Bay job he got screwed when they fired him after 2 yrs. It was a dumpster fire when he 1st got the Tampa Bay job. It sounds like he got some guarantees when he took the Illinois job. Reminds me of when Iowa hired Fry. Fry was promise an upgrade of the football facilities and good pay for the assistant coaches. He then took a terrible football program and made it good for yrs.

We need to keep Illinois recruits coming to Iowa.

As with most anything, time will tell. Lovie did a good job with the Bears. Not in Tampa Bay very long, just long enough for it to be a dumpster fire.

Not a big stretch to say he will be an improvement over Tim Beck. Bobo the Clown would be. A lot of details to be worked out yet as it relates to Lovie. It's been 20 years since he was in the college game. Being a college head coach is more about being a CEO than a football coach. Can he recruit? Does he like recruiting? And on and on. Illini definitely get a bump in credibility
I agree recruits already taking notice with Lovie and Hardy Nickerson and Luke Butkus and Mcgee dam those are some good coaches from the NFL that's where the top recruits want to end up.

As an Iowa fan, this is the first hire Illinois has made in at least a decade that I don't like.

When will people get this fact through their heads: Illinois' DIA is
COMPLETELY self-funded via donors and athletic revenue. It literally has nothing to do with the state.

Apparently, the rest of the states public finances are in such disarray (I wonder why?), that the general public doesn't really care whether DIA is self funding or not. 21M for a FB coach just doesn't make sense. Get your states finances in order, and it won't be near as big of a deal.

Living in IL there is zero chance of getting the state's finances in order. Too corrupt and too dependant.

Seems like the CPL schools produce more basketball talent/ recruiting prospects than football recruits where the Chicago burbs are just the opposite in that regard. Takes more money (revenue costs) for a football program than a basketball program.

I live in Chicago, and this a big nothing here. Nobody is talking about this at all.
