Jack Nunge had 27 points, 22 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots on Friday.

In our following the future update, we take a look at how Iowa's commits are doing on the court this season, get up to date on their stats, and much more.

Class of 2017

Jack Nunge had a huge game on Friday with 27 points, 22 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots in Castle's 72-62 win over Bloomington South. He followed that up with 20 points and 18 rebounds on Saturday as Castle knocked off No. 1 ranked New Albany 72-64. On the season, Nunge is averaging 22.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game for Castle (24-3).

Connor McCaffery was named captain of the Class 4A all-tournament team after leading Iowa City West to a state championship this past week. On their way to the title, McCaffery scored 18 points in the first round against Newton, another 18 points in the semifinals against Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and then 19 points in the championship game against West Des Moines Valley. McCaffery finishes his senior year averaging 19.6 points per game for West (23-3).

Luka Garza finished his senior season averaging 24.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game for Maret (26-5).

Incoming walk-on Austin Ash finished the season averaging 24.1 points per game and shot 41.1% from three-point range for Mount Vernon (17-6).

Class of 2018

Joe Wieskamp finished his junior season averaging 30.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for Muscatine (15-7).

Class of 2019

Patrick McCaffery helped Iowa City West win a state championship this past week, scoring 3 points in their first round win over Newton, 15 points in their semifinal victory over Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and then 12 points in the title game against Valley. McCaffery finishes his sophomore year averaging 13.8 points per game for West (23-3).

to be honest, Jack was the recruit that i was less excited about (between he and Luka) but after hearing how he is dominating their tournament i've changed my tune. very excited to see what he can do here. rebounders and shot blockers are always welcome!

Me too, a 6'11 guy who can shoot and defend the rim would give Iowa a ton of frontcourt flexibility. The more I see of this guy, the more I think we may have gotten a huge steal here.

i did some research, Castle high school is in class 4a (the largest school class) and they are #32 in actual enrollment size (1800 students) in that class out of 100 schools. They will be playing Ben Davis HS (#2 in enrollment at 4220 students).

edit: after reading EIH's post, the numbers i listed above were for grades 9-12 according to the IHSAA Boys Basketball Classifications

Jack plays in a class higher than Garza and about the same as McCaffery. I read where his school is about 1800-1900+- four year, and one of their games was in a high school gym of 8000-plus. I think Nunge will be REALLY good at Iowa because his stats are against some of the very top teams in Indiana. We have to be careful in talking about school enrollments, because each state does it a bit differently. In Iowa, the BEDS system is used and the top three grades are counted. A school can have 500 students in the freshman class and Iowa doesn't count them for the classification the school is in. Garza's school counts everyone on campus at Maret, K- 12, and the 650 enrollment figures don't mean the high school has 650 students. The high school is probably between 300- 350 at best, although from what I have learned they play a lot of pretty good teams. McCaffery plays at one of the largest schools in Iowa and in a conference that is considered by many the best in the state. Their conference, the MVC, won both the 4A and 3A titles this year, and had the most teams qualify for state. I am excited about all three of our new guys and I think all three contribute next year.

I was in the same boat, however, I have changed as well. The rebound and block shot numbers are very impressive considering the competition he has faced. The front court is going to be crowded next year but that is a good problem to have.

Love seeing those rebound numbers from the bigs! Both Nunge and Garza appear to be able to score from numerous area's on the floor. Great job Fran and staff!

Nunge shot blocking/rebounding/3pt shooting would be nice addition as post player to pair up with the inside Cook/Pemsl duo. Nunge seems a little bit like Zeller for Indiana a few years back.

I am still waiting for Reggie Evan's double to appear.
Guys with that kind of desire, attitude for the boards don't come along very often. Cook has the physical gifts to be that guy and probably more offensive game. Remember we got the more finished Reggie after his time in JUCO. Cook may turn out to be that guy in a couple of years.

Garza and Nunge sound good, but where do their minutes come from? Cook is going to demand minutes, Pemsl was too good to not play. Even Kreiner showed some flashes.

Not a bad problem to have.

Nunge very well may take whatever's left of Uhl's mins and back up Baer.

Pemsl had a double-double in his last game. Jus sayn... Cook will get there, I believe. If they all had the energy, determination, perception and desire of the Baer Cage, they would be dominate... Still plenty of time to develop. Love that! :)

It would be nice if one of these guys could develop into a shot blocker ala Erek Hansen with Reggie Evans rebounding skills and tenacity & hops like Greg Brunner. Oh, and add in Jarrod Uthoff's versatility and range..
Ok, just wishfull thinking but if they can help us get back to the Dance, we will be in good shape!

No mention of Wagner in the rotation? Will be his 3rd year in the program & he certainly improved from year 1 to year 2. Lacks any offense other than put-backs & drives to the glass, but he runs the court well & moves his feet on defense. Physically tough, solid role player

Wags is a warrior. Still hope he sees the light and goes straight from the NIT championship to spring football. Then he becomes an unstoppable TE/WR-a position of desperate need for the football team.

But......in the basketball world its going to be pretty hard for even the national media to embargo Iowa's last three recruiting classes. Sophomore class=Baer- 6th man of year. Freshmen class=two 1st team all freshmen guys and a third freshman that led B1G in FG%. I'm in the Kreiner camp and think he will make major stride in the off season.

Garza and Nunge provide depth that few programs have. They don't have to be dominant freshmen, they just have to be good enough to play some quality minutes without the season's success or failure dependent on their excellence. Floor time will demand effort to get minutes inside.

Since ESPN has the biggest audience a have-not program like Iowa featuring five ESPN 4* recruits (Cook, Moss, Bohannon and Garza, and McC) doesn't hurt Hawks chance of getting some recruiting attention in that big ESPN audience.

Just to clear something up here, and possibly make this sound even more impressive, the Bloomington South game was Saturday afternoon, the final against New Albany was at 8 PM Saturday. I can't remember for sure who played the first game, but our regionals are scheduled for 12, and 2,with the winners playing at 8 PM. I was thinking that Castle played the 2 o'clock game.

Had no intent to slight Cordell, believe me. He had a great freshman year, and love his attitude and desire. Cook seems to be more explosion and flash, while Pemsl is consistant and crafty. Thrilled to have them both. it will be very interesting and fun to watch the next couple of years play out.

Love Wagner. Team player, dirty work guy, great hustle. Just think as Fran fills out the roster with more talent, its going to be hard to find minutes for the less skilled players. Wags biggest issues, are limited basketball skills, and no true position. As the frontcourt fills with bigger more skilled players, its going to be hard to find many minutes for an undersized four. Cook, Pemsl, Kreiner, all have shown high upside, and Garza looks like a great fit as a 5 in Frans system. Wags does not have the skills to play the three, so I'd look for Baer, Nunge, Uhl there. It's great to become attached to the players and to root for their success, but this is a GREAT problem to have. If Fran can recruit or develop this kind of depth in the backcourt, we could get that sweet sixteen run in the next three years.
