Random Thoughts:
1. Our offense is too complicated for freshmen receivers to pick up. So why don't we have Jrs and Srs with breakout years because the complexity of the offense should allow them to fool/outplay the defense. Why don't we have an offense that allows young talent to step in and play right away. Does this prevent us from recruiting 4 star WRs? They want to step in and play right away, and know they cannot because of Iowa's complex offense and KF's aversion to potential turnovers.
2. Linebacker depth. Having 3 senior starters all graduating in the same year killed us last year. As a coach, you want to play your best, but you have to rotate players enough to have competent starters for next year. Our DL appears to be solid, on paper, because it appeared that they rotated underclassmen in enough. Does the lack of talent or the lack of killer instinct prevent the possibility of getting more experience to the underclassmen?
3. Scholarships for punters/kickers/FB's? Should these all be positions that you have to earn a scholarship? I can see giving a schollie for FG kicker, but remove it if they get beat out. We are a developmental type of school. We need every schollie we have for other positions.
Concerns:
1. OL: this will decide whether CJB has a good year or not. Good OL helps the running and passing game.
2. WR: Concerned about the unknown. Hoping they use the TE's more to make the safeties focus on the whereabouts of the TE's.
3. Punting game. Enough said.
Optimism:
1. Defensive backfield
2. RB's. Looks like some very good potential. And as much as I liked Mark Weisman, he was not enough of a homerun threat to make the defense scheme against his lack of break away speed. I feel we have more speed in all of our RBs, plus we have 3 veteran FBs.
3. IF CJB stays healthy, I feel good about our offenses potential.
