If you had to rate Hawkeye wrestlers that you have seen who would be your top 2 or 3 at each weight? I just ask that you actually saw them compete. Here are mine.

118/125 - McDonough, Zaputil
126/133 - Davis, Terry
134/141 - Tom, Lewboo, Ironside
142/149 - Metcalf, Troy Steiner
150/157 - Lincoln, TJ Williams
158/165 - Jim Zalesky, Joe Williams
167/174 - Reiland, Borschel
177/184 - Ed Banach, brain fading fast
190/197 - Lee Fullhart, Pete Bush, Sharatt
HWT - Lou Banach, Mocco

Pretty good list. I can't argue with many of them, so I just added a few to your list, tried to find at least 3 per weight for 45 years of watching;

118/125 - McDonough, Zaputil, Glenn (3XAA, added because I wrestled him in fs)
126/133 - Davis, Terry, Penrith, Clark
134/141 - Tom, Lewboo, Ironside, Randall, Juergens (forgot to add earlier)
142/149 - Metcalf, Troy Steiner, McGinnis
150/157 - Lincoln, TJ Williams, Heffernan, Kinseth
158/165 - Jim Zalesky, Joe Williams, Perry
167/174 - Reiland, Borschel, Marty Kistler
177/184 - Ed Banach, Campbell, Alger
190/197 - Lee Fullhart, Pete Bush, Sharatt, Goldman
HWT - Lou Banach, Mocco, Telford

I'd put Eric Juergens in that list. No one could adapt faster than he could. I might even put Jeff McGinnis, if I could figure out where to put him.

Put him as the City High wrestling coach! I wish I could talk him into getting into wrestling coaching......we should have a better wrestling program, sitting here in the Mecca of Wrestling as we do. We should have a girls wrestling program, too......

Didn’t Juergens go something like 3-3-1-1? Not too many have done better than that. He always seemed under appreciated to me, the guy was money.

I think Connell has brought them a long way in a few years. That program was run down when he took over.

I agree. Corey has done an excellent job. Some of his kids didn't even have wrestling shoes when he took over. No way was I ever going to be needing mine again so donated 4 pair to the cause. This from a West High dad. But have known Corey since he was a boy.

And...as far as I know, he is doing without already accomplished wrestlers moving into the school. That is even more impressive to me. I don't know Connell at all, but hats off to him for bringing the program at ICCH back up.

Yes, he did.

What was most remarkable to me is that one moment you think he will not advance because he was just thrown to his back, but he adapts and does an inside trip and then the other guy is on his back and he wins.

I remember Okie State had trained thoroughly to defend his incredible heel pick. Sure enough, Eric hits it and is somehow taken down. But the next time he hits it, adapts, stays lower, and gets the two. His mat awareness was off the charts.

Have to agree with your list TNT, Been watching Hawkeyes since late 70's early 80's. My college coach at Cornell College was a former Hawkeye. I would add Mike Deanna at the appropriate weight as well as Chuck Yagla. I would also put Bowlsby instead of Telford at Hwt.

I am adding Schwab based on his dismantling of Guerrero and Hinson and him coming back from an early loss to help secure the 2000 team title, along with TJ.

I thought I had him on there after Randall. I'm going back to add him. Best H.S. wrestler I ever saw in Iowa, and I saw most of the 4-timers when they were in school.
McGinnis already on at 142. Second-best i saw in H.S.

I only saw Yagla a couple times and DeAnna once that I remember. I was too busy wrestling in H.S. for most of their carrers. I had to stop adding names to my list at some point. Probably should have added Yagla though, as he stopped Lee Kemp from being a 4-timer.

Forgot about Bowlsby, I was debating what other heavy to add. We've had a lot of good heavies but only a few great ones.

As far as good wrestlers the list is long long long. From the most fun to watch were Lewis, Chipparelli, and Penrith. I also was a big fan of Marty Kistler (that was the 167 pounder right?)

Two I would add are: Yagla and DeAnna. Still classify DeAnna-Churella match as one of the best Big Ten finales match ever. Had a front row seat for that one.
Would agree on this one. A great match...

That 177/184 group of three is as an impressive group of 3 wrestlers as I imagine anybody putting together from a single school.

Good to hear! Didn't mean to inadvertently run down the current coach. I have just always been surprised that City hasn't managed to generate more talent, with so many amazing wrestling resources out here in our local community. The gene pool alone must be off the charts.....

Family stuff came up. I have two tickets to the finals at the midlands. Would like them to go to kids / Dad son or whatever. Is this something I can send to you and find a home for them?
