For Those of you worried about Gabe Arnold being too short for 184. Remember Chris Campbell? He was 5'6" at 190 lbs. He was a 2 time NCAA champ with world Gold, Silver and Olympic Bronze. Talent and attitude matter much more than height.
His wiki lists him at 5’8”, so he’s maybe a bit taller than Gabe. For Those of you worried about Gabe Arnold being too short for 184. Remember Chris Campbell? He was 5'6" at 190 lbs. Are you saying that size doesn't matter? I sure hope so for my sake! For Those of you worried about Gabe Arnold being too short for 184. Remember Chris Campbell? He was 5'6" at 190 lbs. I remember Campbell wrestling at 177 when at Iowa. Good comparison to Gabe though. Very similar body builds. For Those of you worried about Gabe Arnold being too short for 184. I don't understand why his height has to be such a disadvantage for him. Seems to me it could be used just as much to his advantage. Hard to get to his legs with heavy hips when they do. His quickness with taller guys will certainly give them problems. Think positive.
OK - short arms is one thing. All I'm saying is he has likely been shorter (stubbier) than most everyone else he has wrestled. This is not something new to him. And if the typical 184 is taller - being atypical is not really a bad thing since he won't be "typical" for what you regularly train with and compete against. A baseball analogy is you bring in a soft tosser after throwing the 98 mph guy. There are reasons why different styles can work.short arms.
Wrestling has changed quite a bit since the 90s. Long guys that are just as strong as the "power" wrestlers are having a lot more success, and litter the landscape far more than they used to.
Im not worried about Gabe being too short for 184. My concern is that the Hawks are leaving points on the board as I think they are better from a team standpoint with Gabe at 174 and Brands at 184. It seems so obvious. Nelson at 174 looks physically bigger than Gabe does at 184.For Those of you worried about Gabe Arnold being too short for 184. Remember Chris Campbell? He was 5'6" at 190 lbs. Well they're 10 lbs apart currently. Gabe is weighing in above 183Im not worried about Gabe being too short for 184. Kinda my point. Gabe is on full feed I imagine and still undersized. I would venture to say a guy like Keckeisen was walking around at about 200 in the off season. Gabe has a great shot at getting into the finals at 174, 184 is going to be a bit more challenging IMHO.Well they're 10 lbs apart currently. Gabe is weighing in above 183
As soon as I read that Coach Phil was in favor of 184 rather than 174 for Gabe, I was in favor too.For Those of you worried about Gabe Arnold being too short for 184. Remember Chris Campbell? I now wonder if Gabe even attempted to claim the 174 spot. Is it possible he had his sights set on 184 all along? As soon as I read that Coach Phil was in favor of 184 rather than 174 for Gabe, I was in favor too.
At least 200.Kinda my point. Gabe is on full feed I imagine and still undersized. I would venture to say a guy like Keckeisen was walking around at about 200 in the off season. Gabe has a great shot at getting into the finals at 174, 184 is going to be a bit more challenging IMHO.
It would require 4 weeks if he’s weighing in close to 184.Counter wrestling and wrestling styles now, can definitely play against shorter wrestler. I realize the Brands brothers 1990s approach to wrestling clearly works now, but using an example from the 1970's isn't reassuring. If the Brands' truly consider performance on the mat as the best tryout, the best indication of who needs to wrestle, then Arnold needs to be at 174 and Nelson needs to be wrestling off with Ferrari at 184. I don't care if Brands can barely beat Arnold in a wrestle off, Nelson has had zero takedowns. He's always been that way and nothing is going to change. Problem is now, it would take Arnold at least a couple months to get down depending what he weighed in at, right?.
I recall Gabe saying the exact opposite last year.As soon as I read that Coach Phil was in favor of 184 rather than 174 for Gabe, I was in favor too.
That's a bold statement when you look at the top of the rankings.Gabe has a great shot at getting into the finals at 174
At 184 he’s got Keckeisen and Starocci. Plus Plott is ranked 3rd and he beat Gabe last year. O’Toole is great, but I’d like that matchup. I don’t think Brands would score an offensive point in that match. That's a bold statement when you look at the top of the rankings.
He'd have a shot sure, but Gabe would be a huge underdog against either KOT or Levi.
Phil's message read more like "the team needed him at 184 and we're team players, so I'm all for what's best for the team" than "in a perfect world, Gabe would be a 184 anyway". Of course, everyone should have a team first attitude, and especially the parents of the athletes, so there's nothing wrong with anything he said, but I still don't think what he said conveys that 184 is Gabe's ideal weight. As soon as I read that Coach Phil was in favor of 184 rather than 174 for Gabe, I was in favor too.
You misspelled f*n Chief. Jesus, can we get a moderator over here?!It’s tough to wrestle a guy outside the “normal”who knows how to use their size (short and stocky or tall and skinny). With Gabe, it's going to come down to his tank and getting to his offense.Outside of the Luther Open, he had two bonus pt wins last year...both majors. So far? 2/2. Like Caliendo, he can take chances that some other guys can't...excellent footwork and tough hips. Both guys are fun to watch.
I believe Gabe got a little bigger than you think this summer. He's not a small 184 like he was last yearKinda my point. Gabe is on full feed I imagine and still undersized. I’m curious what he walks around these days.I believe Gabe got a little bigger than you think this summer. He's not a small 184 like he was last year
Sat next to Chris in a class and he was definitely taller than Gabe. His wiki lists him at 5’8”, so he’s maybe a bit taller than Gabe.
But last year, we liked our guy Riggins instead of Gabe at 84 then?As soon as I read that Coach Phil was in favor of 184 rather than 174 for Gabe, I was in favor too.
Gabe on full feed isn't walking around at 183. Phil has stated that previously in highschool he got over 200.Kinda my point. Gabe is on full feed I imagine and still undersized. Why do you say that? But last year, we liked our guy Riggins instead of Gabe at 84 then?
You think Riggins beat GA out for the spot? Why do you say that?

Because Gabe will place higher at 184 this year vs. Last? Gabe could be shirting this year while the dogs are still out saving him for greener days ahead. This looks like a true mess tnt created for themselves. Can't shirt Gabe now the next 3 years. Iowa needed Gabes pts last yr.No, we liked Abe Assad and were redshirting Gabe. That we used Gabe a couple times at 184 when necessary without burning his shirt is a testament to liking him more than Riggins.
So you’re saying TnT should ignore the athlete and the athlete’s family’s wishes just to do whatever they want? Sounds like a great way to never get another recruit to commit again. Gabe wanted to RS last year and that’s all there is to it. End of story. Nothing more to say. If you don’t like it I suggest you go tell it to Gabe’s face. Otherwise shut the hell up.Because Gabe will place higher at 184 this year vs. Last? Gabe could be shirting this year while the dogs are still out saving him for greener days ahead. My main reasoning for thinking Gabe would be better at 174 is his own words. He was asked last year after competing up at 184 is he was moving up permanently , and he said something to effect of “this is a one time thing, I’m 5’7”!” Perhaps he and coaching staff have changed their minds, but I think he’ll score more points at 174. I think Brands will have similar results at either weight.Gabe on full feed isn't walking around at 183. Phil has stated that previously in highschool he got over 200.
