have we ever been this bad defensively? I mean, ever?

It's very frustrating to watch a team that's bad defensively. It takes away from the fact that we've got a pretty good offensive team. Maybe the two are related.

I'm a Chiefs fan. During the Trent Green years, we had a "defensive coordinator" named Greg Robinson. How this turd ever got to be an assistant coach at the highest level is beyond me. He stole a potential Super Bowl offense with his boneheaded leadership of the defense.

It's the only analogy I can come up with.

I don't get it. Were all the young players who have played poorly on defense so far this year, bad at defense in high school? I guess some in depth research would tell us but I can't believe that to be the case. If they weren't bad did they forget how to play defense in one year? It just seems that everyone is looking for answers (and making excuses) about the poor defense when it's easily solved. Teach the da** kids how to play defense. Quit working on plays (87 points will win a lot of games) and teach the kids how to keep the person/area you are guarding from scoring. Iowa is behind the eight ball when it comes to one-on-one matchups this year, but kids can be taught how to play smart and adjust. Just teach them.

sounds easy doesn't it...this is my opinion.
first a lot of bad habits can be developed in AAU..and no defense is not at the top of the list when it comes to teaching.
I know one high school coach says he needs to undo what summer ball has done every fall.

its not a matter of being bad at defense in high school (although some hs coaches struggle getting some kids to buy in)...one reason being offense sells...you really think Rivals put's an emphasis on how well a kid plays defense when it comes to their rankings?

Iowa's problems IMO are multiple...but no its not easy playing defense in D1 against the talent they play against...its not that easy to say just teach them. Its just not....

what bothers me against Omaha I anticipated we would see the defense improve...not only did it not...but giving up what 18 offensive rebounds...wholly crap.

So that tells me our problems are deep .. hoping for the best.

I don't remember what Miller's "sixpack'" defensive average was, but they really could shoot. And won the B-Ten. The year before

Miller's 1970 team went 14-0 in the big ten and it's def. avg. was 87.0 And they could really shoot. I always figured, that since the previous team went 5-9 in the conference, and even though he loved defense, he decided to just let them play the next year (mostly same players) as making them play defense was probably sort of a lost cause, esp. because when losing 4 early lower scoring games before going on their conference win-all streak. Just my opinion, of course,.

The reason the 1970 team allowed 87 pts per game was a direct result of their offense...they ran, passed & shot so quickly (at a high shooting %) the opponents number of offensive possessions' increased...thus their scoring also went up. And Iowa was able to run because back in those days...you were not allowed anywhere near the hand checking, etc as is allowed today.

And there was no 3 point line.....whew..

The addition of Fred Brown in 1970 was the missing link that the 69 team did not have. Was pretty fortunate to see several games including the Mideast Regional in Columbus...the tip in by Burrows was on our end of the court. Sad.
