This was a tweet posted on an ISU message board. I have no way of knowing how accurate it is, and if it's already been mentioned here, I apologize. But since it has no direct relevance to either Iowa or ISU, maybe it is worth discussing.

Two of the Texas Tech starters were rated three-star, two were two-star and one was unrated out of high school. The ratings were 0, 132, 185, 312 and 358.

Watching Texas Tech and you providing those numbers, just tells me recruiting stars have a lot more to do with Offensive metrics than anything else. Defense takes effort, and TT gives a lot of effort on the Defensive side of things, that's for certain.

The #312 in your list is Jarrett Culver.

Love watching him play and he is easily my favorite non-Hawkeye in college bball.

I think that when it comes to star ratings........you have some folks with a good basketball knowledge base who do a reasonable job of seeing and rating players. THE PROBLEMS ARE that they can't see them all with enough frequency to be precise, and they can't see how they will develop and mature, how each player will fit in the given system they eventually end up in, etc......I think the top players are the easy one's to predict...after the top 30 or so the lines begin to blur.

Wow, that's pretty nuts, just another reason I've been cheering them on the whole way. When Iowa played Mooney a year ago for USD, and I heard he was transferring, I knew whoever was going to get him, was getting a really good player. They play great defense too, and I believe Beard is a fantastic coach.

Although this isn't "Glory Road" stuff, I see some similarities between Beard and Don Haskins of Texas Western (UTEP). Of course, there's only a few on this board who have been around long enough to tell me I'm wrong. Ha!

I remember listening to that game on the radio as we were 6 - 0 and Iowa had it's best team since the 50's. Often overlooked in Iowa History was 6'4" Gerry Jones, one of the most ferocious rebounders ever at Iowa. In the 3 years he was allowed to compete back then he averaged over 16 points and 10 rebounds per game. Since freshmen couldn't compete and there were way less games played, Jones never appears very high on all time lists, Likewise George Peoples was a 17 point/10 RB/game man too. Only played 68 games though. That 65 - 66 team had 5 players ave in double figures with Purval @ 19, Peoples @ 18, Jones @ 16, McGilmer @ 11 and Olsen @ 10.

I think Clay Hargrave was only 6' 4" but lead the B1G in rebounding during the Olsen era. Unfortunately, he had academic issues and didn't play again.

Maybe, but Virginia has a few more black players than Kentucky did in 1966.

Chris Beard knows how to put together a roster and knows how to coach. He did the same thing at Arkansas Little Rock. We keep hearing how terrible things were for Fran, neither ALR or TT were high flying programs when Beard took over, yet he managed to do wonders in a very short time.

That seems pretty obvious now.....he is THE young(?) super coach right now....but who knows before you hire them that it will work for certain? His resume is very impressive, although he doesn't stay anywhere long....maybe he will now. Yes, he was at TT for 10 years under Knight...but many 1 year stops....Todd L was an impressive national coach of the year......and then not so impressive.

Beard is either incredibly lucky, or one hell of a coach. Probably both.

I looked it up earlier this year, for HS recruits that are ranked 200+, ISU really only has them make an impact like 10% of the time. It's incredibly rare they do anything other than transfer at some point. It's incredibly impressive.
