Social Security has never missed a benefit payment since the program first began sending individuals monthly benefits more than eight decades ago.

But the recent actions at the U.S. Social Security Administration by Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency are putting monthly benefit checks for more than 72.5 million Americans at risk, former commissioner and former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley told CNBC.com.

"Ultimately, you're going to see the system collapse and an interruption of benefits," O'Malley said. "I believe you will see that within the next 30 to 90 days."

Ahead of any interruption in benefits, "people should start saving now," O'Malley said.

The Social Security Administration uses multiple systems and technologies that Elon Musk has criticized for leading to errors. As commissioner, O'Malley told Congress the agency needed more funding for IT modernization.

O'Malley said DOGE leaders are now making changes at the agency, and significant staff cuts have already led to system outages. Those intermittent IT outages may happen more frequently and for more extended periods of time until there is a "system collapse and an interruption of benefits," he said.

It is interesting that if an outage stops a month's payments it will affect just about the number of people who voted for tRump all 3 times each.

And it will really piss those people off and cause a near castastrophe for many of them

If that happens, the GOP is in serious, serious trouble. Like these guys may have all of their properties being marched on by angry mobs and their lives in danger. This is some spectacular let it burn already.

It’s not just those 72 million on it that will be pissed, but also their sons and daughters and grandsons and grand daughters. In other words, everyone.

One of the issues discussed acrossed multiple sources is the fraud within the government exist due to the systems we use inability to talk to each other.

It will all work out.

Also, Social Security is a scam, but that's not for today.

Big ripple effect....even a delay in benefits will prevent a number of people from paying their bills which will in turn prevent others from pay their bills.

This. Job losses from federal freeze, consumer confidence plummeting so people spending less capped off by pulling away social security payments for even one month will have us in a collapse worse than 2008. Honestly, we could be heading for a depression if Congress and cabinet members can’t awake and check Trump and Musk.

Technically even a delay might be considered a US Default. They didnt pay an obligation when due. This could lead to a lower credit rating and higher interest rates for the US.

It didn't need to come to this.

Did things need to be addressed????
Absolutely!

But why the rush to try and reform everything all at once?
These drastic actions by a non elected individual are reckless and dangerous.
Many retirees are terrified right now and I'm sure many have experienced sleepless nights, unnecessarily.

The article in the op is about a delay in benefits due to the ham handed decisions of DOGE and the boys, not a collapse of the entire program.
Are you seriously trying to equate the system effectively collapsing and unable to perform the daily required functions as just a minor issue? If People don't receive their checks, good luck.

That's not true and people need to dismiss this false premise.

Anybody that wants to start with this premise needs to demonstrate an objective reality that it needed to be addressed
Even Dems admit the immigration policies needed to be reformed.
That's one item.
I'm surprised you have that view.

Hell, I'd say gun rights and gun reform is also a big issue.
We're overdue for another school massacre, even though Republicans don't think anything can be done.

No, and I find it strange that you could pull an opinion out of the post you quoted.
You state : its an op ed, its talking about a delay of benefits not a collapse of the system . . .(paraphrased)

1. It appears you are saying its not a big deal
2. Collapse is a loose term, your interpretation is if it breaks but can become operational again is ok. For people who rely on those checks not receiving them would be construed as an extreme collapse of the system.

WTF are you talking about?

30-90 days is saving for a TV

Saving for retirement is a lifetime endeavor.
And Social Security has been the primary lynch-pin for way over 90% of America retirees and those who are planning for their retirement. And you’re right…. Retirement is a long term savings/planning endeavor for the vast majority of us.

FFS. Trump already said this isn't going to happen. You guys will believe anything you read. Besides, the amount of money saved by NOT paying "unalive" people will save the system.
Yes!!! All these loser libs in a panic! Our wonderful president has already addressed this matter. They won’t let it happen, he is the most honest, hardworking president ever….and Liberals just ignore what he says.

It’s a farce frankly that Abe Lincoln is considered “honest Abe” he was a used car salesman compared the the radical candor of President trump!!

Fear mongering - SS benefits should be automated. This is not complicated. Hope DOGE cuts the fraud so this system can make it past 2035. The politicians on both sides have been pillaging this fund for way too long.

Elections have consequences... people shouldn't be relying on government handouts anyway. Did I get that right, MAGAts?

The congressional Cons will never be welcome back in their districts or their state.

The only way the system collapses is if the D’s execute their plan of not raising the debt ceiling.

The question is whether all of the D politicians are willing to move forward with their plan.
