McCaffery’s base salary for the three years remaining on his contract (after the current one) is $2,100,000 for 2025-26; $2,150,000 for 2026-27; and $2,250,000 for 2027-28. Taking 60% of that total equals $3.9 million.

McCaffery also is owed 60% of his base salary for the remaining 3½ months of this contract year (through June 30) – which computes to $358,750.

Thus, McCaffery’s buyout is roughly $4.26 million.

Also, according to McCaffery’s contract terms, Iowa can pay the buyout over the course of 36 months, meaning on average it would cost the university athletics department about $1.42 million per year for three years to move on from McCaffery.

It’s ironic that he had one of his best recruiting classes in year 15. No guards of course.

They had $1.5 million NIL payroll in this season that just ended and they are suppose to be getting $2.5 million or so from Revenue sharing.
I would say thie recruiting victories he had were due to having more NIL to offer, the opportunity to play in B1G, Spurlock. They type of athlete was strikingly different than past classes--was that finally a recognition he needed more athleticism? Who knows. IF Fran really spent $1.5 million to get the 2024-2025 roster, it doesn't look like he spent the money well.

Makes me wonder what was really happening.

I feel like Fran knew this was probably his last year. He sold his house and his sons all went to Butler. He was just saying otherwise so he could get max buy out.

I think Fran mostly just let Spurlock recruit who he wanted.

I believe Fran could have been signing more athletes all along he just wanted a specific type of player that moves without the ball and shoots for his offense to be at its most efficient.

I will gladly take 1/2 of that to not coach Iowa basketball.

Maybe some truth to your last point but Fran tried to land some highly ranked guys, often coming up short of course. My insight is that it became a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy as he normally locked in many in state, clean cut, midwestern guys.
