Fran BIG Coach of year?

He absolutely should be seriously considered.

I think that still depends on how the season ends. Personally, I would put him 4th at the moment. You did say consideration and I think his work does need to be considered.

1. Painter
2. Pikiell
3. Gard (barf)
4. Fran
---
13. Hoiberg
14. Howard (probably would have had him at 11 or 10 until the slap)

I've been critical of him this year for the first year plus of his time here, maybe some justified and some not, but i've always loved him. Just like Kirk, there will be things that piss me off about him as long as he's here, but I hope he's here for a long long time.

I'm too lazy to look but he replaced 4 of our top 6 players. How many other teams in the B1G have done this?

I guess we wait and see how they finish. If they stay in the top 5 or six, maybe some votes for him. Picked 9th or 10th pre-season. Getting 6th or 7th would probably not earn anyone a coach of the year award.

I think it’s between Fran and Pikiell from Rutgers. I’m biased but it seems like Fran has done better doing more with less after losing all the players from last years team. Painter has done well but everyone expected Purdue to be good this year.

I hate to say this but Wisconsin has exceeded everyone’s expectations as well, they were picked 10th in the preseason and is now looking at a bye in the BTT. I don’t know if the latest scum will sway votes but I’m sure Gard will be considered.

Maybe not Fran, but I don’t understand why Pikiell would be the favorite. He’s had basically the same group of contributors for what feels like four years now. They should be good and are

I think Gard is deserving

Howard could punch his way up the list

I don’t understand the argument that if a team was “supposed to be good” the coach shouldn’t get credit. He built the team and coached them to contending or winning the title. That’s the definition of coach of the year qualifications, isn’t it? Having low expectations, but exceeding them gets little credit in my book. You’re the coach that fostered those low expectations, so you shouldn’t get a pass when you exceed them.

Fran called that timeout after 2 possessions in the 2nd half last nite, don't remember him doing that before. I thought it was a great timeout. In the past he would have had his guys try to play through and potentially lose a lot of ground. Nice change by the coach.

Wisconsin was predicted to finish below Iowa and they are competing for B1G title. Illiniois lost Aya and they brought in a 2G replacement and they are competing for B1G title. Rutgers has ben dogchit forever and Pikiel has them competing to stay in the conversation for B1G title. Purdue has the best talent in B1G and Painter totally rebuilt that team in 2 years and is best hope for B1G flag in NCAA.

Unless Iowa goes on to win the next 5, Fran is not even in the conversation by B1G media. You don't get coach fo the year for 9-7 type record.

We will probably have to agree to disagree on this. After losing 4 of their top 6 scorers from last years team (53 ppg) no one was giving Iowa any chance of finishing in the upper half of the conference, not to mention 1 of those players was the POTY. There were talks of Keegan being a potential NBA 1st round pick but there were nothing but question marks after that. To lose that much scoring and come back the next year and be 4th in the country in scoring is impressive. While he may not be the COTY I think Fran will be in the conversation. The other teams/coaches you referenced also have good resumes.

If Iowa were to win the next 4 (there's 4 left in the regular season) I think Fran gets attention nationally. That means they knocked off Michigan and Illinois on the road and Iowa goes into the BTT with a 23-8 (13-7 conference) record. For comparison last years team finished 22-9 and 14-6 in conference. Fran would be getting a lot of attention if that was to happen. Having said that there is no chance Iowa is beating Illinois in Champaign.

As of today I agree. Fran deserves consideration.
A month ago I would have said no way, but Iowa has played as well as anyone in the conference over the past couple of weeks. I don't think Fran has ever had as solid a February as this one. It's not merely the fact that Iowa is winning, but *how* they're winning. They leave no doubt when beating the scrubs and have beaten OSU and MSU convincingly in back-to-back games. I have never doubted the Hawks' ability on offense, but they are actually playing competent defense. The massive improvement in the rebounding department is especially encouraging. Right now, they're a shoo-in for splitting the last 4 remaining games. They have a good chance at 3-1, and even a clean sweep isn't entirely out of the question.

Right now I would say Fran should probably be second runner-up for B1G COY, barring a massive collapse on Iowa's part, or a massive collapse from Rutgers. I know Purdue was supposed to be pretty good so I don't think Painter would actually win COY even if the Boilers win the B1G, but I do think he would get second place wrapped up since they at least lived up to expectations.

Lots of basketball left and it depends on how the teams finish. If Wisconsin wins the B1G it would be Gard. Fran can win it but I think the Hawks need to win the BTT for it to happen. Pikiell is the other coach in the mix. If neither Iowa or Wisconsin wins the B1G or BTT and Rutgers makes it into the top 4 and makes a BTT run then I think Pikiell wins it.

I thought the post was that Fran should be getting consideration "now" and I would say I don't think anyone in the media is mentioning Fran at this time . If Iowa rolls off 4 straight with win at possible B1G champ Illinois, that is a different scenario and tough task to accomplish.

McCaffery won't get a sniff unless we finish the season in a very dramatic fashion. Pikiell will get some votes, but his overall record won't be that great. Painter and Underwood would normally battle it out, because the voters love winners, but in the end, I think Gard will get it unless they totally sputter down the stretch. Plus, the poor guy had that awful encounter with Howard and has to fight off those ugly attacks on his choirboy, Davison.

Yeah, I only brought up winning the next 4 because you brought up winning the next 5. As of right now I would think Fran is in the running for the Big Ten COTY.
