I haven't read or heard this, so someone correct me if I am wrong. Fran has done a masterful job with players basically nobody else wanted. We aren't winning with McDonald's All American 4 star kids and while I have scratched my head at recruiting on occasion, no doubt Fran is as solid of an X and O guy as there is and has a knack for developing players. Not sure who would be a better choice based on pre-season expectations.

If Iowa wins the Big Ten after the pundits had Iowa at best (that I saw) at sixth place? Many having Iowa as low as ninth and I think I even saw one tenth?

When we are currently 5th on KenPom and the four ahead of us were known from the start to be good?

Yeah, we win the Big Ten Fran should be National COY.

And If I can make a suggestion, why not start trusting his eye when it comes to recruiting. Jok? Another freagin' unranked 3 star hit. Over and over...Fran makes teams out of players.

Are you talking national or B1G? If Iowa wins the B1G you could make a strong case for national given Iowa's mediocre preseason projections.

Forde's article today stated he would vote Fran COY as things stand today.

I do think Pete was much more Fran taking a calculated risk than finding a diamond in the rough (ala Aaron White), he was very highly thought of prior to the injury and it was more around how he recovered than anything else. Still agree though around trusting Fran's judgment. If he wants 'em, I want 'em...

I agree about him being COY, but disagree with the statement that they are winning with players nobody else wanted. The seniors, other than AC, were very highly regarded coming in. Woodbury was a top 50 4 star player nationally with many offers, including North Carolina. Gesell was a top 100 4 star player, and Uthoff was a top 150 player with an impressive offer list. Jok had lots of interest prior to his injury, and some backed off. Several of the underclassmen may fit into the less recruited category, but most of the main guys driving the ship right now were highly sought after. I agree though that Fran is COY.

Only way that happens is if Wisconsin wins out...I think it's between Fran, Turgeon, and Crean. Whoever wins the regular season title will probably have the COY.

That is fair. Can't be too many times we could have the Big Ten Football and Basketball coaches from the same school.

If they win the league not only should he be B1G COY , but odds on favorite for national COY. What other team has done more with lower expectations than Iowa?

based on the preseason expectations it's a slam dunk.

No one had theeeee IOWA HAWKEYES ranked in Top 25 at beginning of season. Now, after 25 games, they sit in the Top 5, nationally. Fran McCaffery is the Big10 and National Coach of the Year, at this point. Hopefully, we win out and any discussion becomes academic

Not a fan of Fran McCaffery, but his team was picked to finish 9th in the conferences to start the year and he has lead them to first place. In my mind that makes him the leading candidate for B1G coach of the year.
curious. Why are you not a fan?

I disagree with those who believe COTY should be "who surprised us the most", and I think it is an insult to this team and Fran to use that as the logic for selecting him.

Had this team been rated top ten he should still be COTY based on who Iowa has beat, when, and where. As I posted above, Jay Wright might be the next choice, the Dayton Manning the other. Surprise might be a factor, but too many people think that is what the award is for.

Really the problem was that Iowa was completely underrated, and not just based on their current record. Based on 4 senior starters, one who was an All-Big Ten candidate, a point guard and center who have played together for a decade+, and a top notch defender. Iowa never should have been ranked outside the top 25 to begin with. Fran didn't simply "coach them up" so to speak, over their abilities, he built this team years ago and it came to fruition, building on top of last year.

He deserves, and will win, the awards if the Hawks keep up the winning, but not because some idiots refused to put them in the top 25 to begin with.

This is the type of post I'm taking issue with above.

Fran did not "lead them to first place [from 9th place]." The four seniors led them to first place on a team built and coached up by Fran. That isn't to take anything away from Fran, what I'm saying is that there wasn't a moment where Fran has sparked them to play above their abilities, he coached them for four years to see this result. They never should have been considered 9th.

Sorry, talking National COY. 100 ways to analyze this team and evaluate talent. Without Uthoff, this is a very pedestrian team likely on the bubble at best. To me, we are who we are and while Fran did not land Uthoff out of high school, Uthoff thought of enough of him to leave WI and pay out of pocket for a shot to play 2 years.

Not sure how some can be down on FM. I appreciate a coach who doesn't patronize fans with nonsensical ramblings like 'that's just basketball'.

Oh goodness, you are in for some surprises if you look back on his (and every other great NCAA basketball coach's) pressers.

Please elaborate. I get coach speak, but I also can discern the recycled bravo sierra we hear from Kirk and actual accountability / responsibility and candor from FM.

I'm not going to go back through pressers, but feel free to. Hell, just look at pressers from big ten games this year. You will see comments just like "that's football", because it is a realistic, reasonable answer. Shit happens, and it happens often in sports. People weren't mad that he said it, they used what he said to attack what they were mad about: losing. KF stopped losing and it magically went away, even though his "candor" never changed.
