Dev did a good job holding the tears back, but they about came out at the end of that. Man, I miss watching him in an Iowa uniform. He was so freaking good.

Tugs at the heartstrings a bit. Dev is my favorite McCaffery player, which says a lot because I’m a huge fan of a ton of the guys that Fran has brought in over the years. Certainly the Dayton game in the NIT was huge for the program and both White and McCabe had awesome games for the Hawks, but when Marble dropped 31 on the road against Oregon after starting 7-7 from three in a game that Iowa led for most of the way, you really got the sense that Iowa was either back or just about there. The following year had to be the most optimistic I felt about an Iowa basketball team heading into the season in way too long.
Had a blast watching him with the Hawks, and we really haven’t had an all around guard like Dev since. The last couple of years, it was disheartening to see him distance himself from the Iowa program, so to see that Fran has righted that relationship and gotten him back in the locker room is awesome to see. Well done, Fran

There is a Marble on the current Michigan State team. Is he related to Devyn?

Went to both games we hosted the NIT back then. Awesome atmosphere.
Also experienced one of the craziest scenes I've ever witnessed while driving to the game.....

One of the loudest Carver crowds I was in. We were so happy after the Lickliter disaster.

And we’ve beaten some damn good teams too. That Cincinnati team was loaded, and I recall when we played Davidson every talking head thought they’d shoot us out the gym. Fran has made March fun again, and for any person who was still invested in the program during the Lick years, that’s literally all we wanted and asked for.
The sweet 16 jump is coming, and it might be coming this year…
That NIT Dayton crowd was one of the most fun sporting events I’ve ever attended. I’ll never forget leaving Carver that night and just feeling the energy.. it was like this giant shift happening and it felt like everyone there sensed it.

Talked to Roy’s sister after the game and she said Julius is her cousin.

IIRC, at one point over the course of 3 games, Gatens was like 16 or 19 from three. It was an incredible stretch.
That home game against Wisco that year is still one of the craziest single game performances I’ve ever seen from a Hawkeye. He was straight lights.
Attended that game,.. 2/23/12 I believe, Gatens went 7 /10 from three and we beat a ranked Badger team 67-66.
Fran has shown that he cares for his players. He does that part of his job as well as any coach.
The play in loss was Tennessee 14, I still consider the Dance the field of 64 in order to keep a level playing field with the previous coaches who didn't get a 68 team tourney so really it's 6/12 if we are gonna compare him to Davis as far as reaching the field of 64. Pretty good. Far from great

Just looked up Gaten's run. During a four game stretch, Gatens went 24/33 (73%) from deep. He had back to back games of 7/10 from three, against Indiana and Wisconsin.

I missed the comparison to Davis or other previous coaches. Before Davis arrived the NCAA tournament field was 53, 52, 48, and 40, respectively from 1979-1984. It moved to 64 in ‘85. At what number do we set the NCAA field when comparing other previous coaches on a “level playing field”?
The NCAA considered Iowa a 2014 participant of the NCAA tournament. Iowa considers themselves a participant. Anyone without a clear agenda considers them a participant in 2014 as Iowa had equal chance to win the tournament as any of the 67 other teams. By your logic, Tennessee who was a sweet 16 team in 2014, wasn’t even an NCAA tournament participant 🙄.
Iowa has made the NCAA tournament six of the last eight years counting the Covid year. Whether you consider it or not.

That was one of my favorite games. The Stoney Brook game is too. Both NIT games. Why? Everybody that went to those games went to cheer on the Hawkeyes. Not simply be there. Not even to cheer about good plays. To cheer them ON! Not shockingly we played well both games. Thanks for posting that video. Too bad it wasn't longer. Was a great day to be a Hawk!
