Something Fran would never do... Mick Cronin throwin the team under the bus

I mean, are we really going to compliment Fran on his demeanor and class after all he’s done over the past decade and a half?!?

Fran is no saint and has many flaws with his behavior and demeanor. Despite being much better this year, those things are not acceptable.

However, Fran would never publicly name almost every guy who got in the game and rail on them for the mistakes they made to the media that way.

Gard called Crowl out about 6 games ago after he recorded zero rebounds. He’s been on a tear ever since.

Getting kicked out of the game after calling out your team is not the best look, is it? Doesn't seem that worked as a motivational tool.

He needs to seek out Tony Robbins.

UCLA is 0-for since the game his team lost (vs Michigan) and subsequent games. Let's see who they have on the schedule next...

Iowa.

I'm really curious to see what both teams mentalities will be heading into this game.

UCLA lost 75-68 last night at Rutgers. The Bruins have lost their last 4 games (at Nebby, vs Michigan, at Maryland, at Rutgers).

Cronin got tossed in the Friday, Jan 10 loss at Maryland, this time going after the officials.

"I had enough. I'm sending a message. I'm tired of it. I know we're the outsider and all that -- us, USC and Oregon -- but that was ridiculous.”

“If you can just mug guys and chop their arms off, throw them out of the way, it's hard to run any offense."

"We needed some stronger officials on the game in my opinion. In defense of my players, we didn't have a lot of time. We had one day to prepare."

This is UCLA's first season in the Big Ten, along with USC, Oregon and Washington. Difficult travel was a given when those teams joined, and the Bruins are dealing with it now.

They played at Nebraska on Jan 4, returned home for one game with Michigan on Jan 7 and then headed out for a trip to Maryland (Jan 11) and Rutgers (Jan 13).

"We had to travel on a five-hour-and-50-minute flight. They got home Sunday. They had two extra days," Cronin said. "Now Rutgers is sitting at home, and they got an extra day. I haven't mapped all this out, but I sure hope it swings our way at some point."

After returning from Rutgers, UCLA will play 7 straight games on the West Coast from Jan. 17 to Feb. 8 -- five home games plus trips to Washington and USC.

"I get it. It's probably virtually impossible to make the schedule, but I just know it hasn't been good for us," Cronin said. "Michigan was in L.A. three days before we were."

Cronin has been UCLA coach for at least 6 years.
They have given up 75+ points in all 4 losses...never has happened in his time w Bruins.
Cronin is a defensive physical coach...and brought that style to high- flying Pac-12 with success.

Now, he is in a new league that specializes in physical defense.
Suddenly UCLA is no where near the toughest team in league.
Refs let it go in this league.

When the high scoring Hawks come to pauley on Friday I suspect hell is coming to breakfast.
Cronin will have them spitting fire
Be ready, Hawks.

That reference turns 50 soon, I'm not sure it's the best pull ;)
Yeah, that's ancient history now. I only pulled it out of my childhood memory bank because I wasn't sure if the OP was claiming this kind of behavior was a recent phenomenon. IIRC, Lute said something along the lines of "William and Clay need to play like juniors."

The game v. UCLA will be very telling. Lose at home to Iowa and it could get ugly in Westwood. Mick is close to losing the locker room IMO. They do get a few days of rest before playing, but they're dealing with all the fires nearby as well. Not sure how well they will be focused.

Maybe Fran needs to do this in private, in the locker room. But this is unreal these days, calling out players, coaches and everyone else in public.

Unfortunately for Cronin, UCLA fans are some of the most entitled fans in the sport, (and not without reason!). Cronin has won big with the Bruins, but the B1G has been a step up from the Pac 12 so far and like when the Bugeaters made their triumphant entry into the conference and found that just maybe they weren't going to be able to dominate the football field as they did in the Big 12. Nevertheless, taking the "I coached good, but they played badly" attitude, is never a good look and he's been around long enough to know better.

I somewhat agree. I've been to games recently at Pauley Pavillion and it seems all the John Wooden past boosters have died and gone. LA is more of a pro sports team as UCLA basketball & USC football (talk about entitled, almost like lil Nebbie fans) haven't seen much success lately.

But any coach who's publicly airing a teams dirty laundry like he has, seems like they're looking for a way out. Maybe he's hoping for a nice buy out. IDK

Got yelled at and thrown under the bus as a teen to early twenties at various jobs. In front of customers and bosses. I don’t agree with the management style. But that’s the way it is now. It’s a job. IMO
If you are making 5-6 figures $ from NIL, you ought to be able to handle a little verbal correction.

That is all Cronin is about though.
Well, he has managed to win two thirds of all his games in Westwood. That's incredibly tepid in comparison to the supposed gold standard, John Wooden, but it's not bad.
Besides, given the current state of pay for play college basketball, Cronin didn't even have to cheat.

All I was meaning they don't play defense and that is his staple. He's got to be unhappy. I also can't read your dark writing.

2 sweet sixteens and a Final 4 3 of the last 4 years. I’d take it.

Professional athletes deserve to be called out when they do not do their jobs. Kudos to Cronin.
