Fran made a big mistake this year when he did not go to the portal

Fran is clueless

And do not forget Ash got a schollie
The big mistake by FM was believing FR could play the 5 in the Big Ten. Possibly could thrive at the 4 if we had a true big who could hit the boards. Keegan could play the three along with PM. Kris could play anywhere from 2-4 depending on matchups. Could say the same about Keegan. JBO and TP at the 2 and Joe T. and AU at point. Sandfort also could play 2 or 3 depending on the matchups. He needs to get minutes particularly if JBO cannot get open looks. JO and RM are what we have and both need minutes. Fran kidding himself if he thinks we are going to rebound with better teams with the lineups he has been putting on the court.

Given the essential free movement of players available it would be stunning if there wasn't a non power 5 D1 player or a quality D2 player at the 5 spot who wouldn't have been interested in coming to Iowa. Not a scorer; zero expectation of filling Garza's shoes. Actually looking for the opposite of Luka in that they primarily needed a rim protector and rebounder. They got neither with Rebraca.

How about looking internationally? I've yet to hear anything about Iowa under Fran looking to other options for bringing players in. Whoever is leading the recruiting efforts should be pushing any and all options for locating players. Sticking with just high school prospects is insufficient.

Josh Ogundele and Gabe Olaseni say "hello"
From England, but via US based basketball academies isn't much of an international reach. I'm thinking more along the lines of St. Mary's in Cali getting a bunch of Aussies. Fran bringing in the Os(Josh and Gabe) is barely sticking a toe in the ocean on that spectrum.
My primary point is that Fran's approach should be much more expansive than what it appears to be when looking for potential players. As soon as he knew that Nunge was moving on it was necessary to beat the bushes for all options available from any possible source. If Rebraca is the result, then it seems reasonable to re-evaluate the process that they are using as that was not a good get on first look nor has it played out well to date.

Offering Ash a scholarship and shutting down (or maybe he just struck out) working other channels to bring in a (or a few) post players is yet another hole in a Fran McCaffery built roster.
But what a "body of work" for Barta to extend his contract. Fran has now been at Iowa for a long, long time...he has never gotten past the first weekend in the NCAA tourney. In year 10-12 or whatever it is...that's unacceptable to me at a place like Iowa, who has facilities and resources. If we are talking brass tax...he hasn't gotten it done.

When Barta hired him...did he say, "you have 15 years to get to the Sweet Sixteen". Here's a thought, Kirk Ferentz has been in the top 16 seven times in football in the end of the year rankings.

I love the way Fran's teams play offensively...but we are no where near a top 16 team right now. We can't stop teams...and good teams will be able to slow us down on offense. Until you can consistently stop people down the stretch with great defense...you can't climb beyond the top 16 teams.

He offered a kid in Nigeria or some other African country recently

I might have overreacted. I just didn't feel like this was Ash preferring to be somewhere else for "greener pastures" just that he wanted a scholarship. When one became available at Iowa he showed he preferred to be there. That is different than someone who doesn't want to be a Hawk or just prefers a new opportunity "to be the man".
Wouldn't that be greener pastures for him on an individual level? I wasn't meaning that he was going to find a better school to give him a scholarship but I can see how you interpreted that from my

I'm pretty sure it's not easy to get one guy to transfer into a program that already has starters and may have to compete against others for time, whereas when a team has NOBODY, it has to be easier to assemble a team. Terrible comparison
You think it's easier to get guys to transfer to a team that went 2-22 last year, with a new coach in Ames, Iowa than it is for Fran to grab a couple guys on team that made the NCAA tourney, was highly rated for half or more of the season and had the NPOY? I don't follow your logic, but to each their own.

It's all good. I think we actually were saying the same thing but I could have stated it differently.

Playing time is the BIGGEST factor for many, if not most of these guys. On top of that, most of the transfers ISU got were not considered good transfers, difference makers, or anything else you'd want to call them, by any publication. I believe Rebraca was thought of more highly than any of them. I'm still in shock at their record.

Good points, but their athleticism made Iowa look like a D-3 team. Fran needs a Brockington type guard, but that will never happen. A scoring PG who can create for others is like Iowa football embracing a mobile QB.

I like what I have seen, but I said the same about Joe T, Ulis, and Perkins.

He’s a higher level recruit, I think he’s well rounded and he’s playing very high level competition at Brewster, multiple D1 P5 opponents. He can throw it down, can drive well and pass well, is athletic as Tony if not maybe a bit more, has some length and is developing a good 3 point shot. I saw a little bit of each of those things from Joe T, Ulis and Perkins, but not all of them. I have high hopes for the kid but college is way different. that being said I love all 3 of the guys aforementioned, so let’s hope Bowen adds to our developing repertoire of athletic talented dudes in the backcourt

By all accounts, Dix has hops and is legit. TBD, but Iowa needs some more dynamic scorers. Living by the 3 only works when they go in.

Again, I and most others are shocked at how well Brockington is playing. He wasn't close to this good at PSU. Maybe lightening in a bottle? Maybe coaching? Don't know. He's also a 5th year Senior, let's see what Perkins looks like next year without Jbo clogging minutes. I really like Perkins, my second favorite player on the team.

It's entirely possible that transfers looked at the roster (remember Keegan Murray was just a guy last season) and saw a rebuilding year they didn't want to be a part of. No one transfers so they can make the NIT.

Back to back players of the year should allow for a great pitch. Still plenty of time left in the year to improve. Players want to win and last year we were top 5. Personally I like our roster and think it will continue to improve.

So the 2 win team got transfers and they were expecting NCAA?

Fair points. Brockington isn't going to do what he against Iowa every night, but the dude is a freak athlete who is a match up problem for most teams on both ends. Agree that Jbo logging all these minutes when not scoring, which is going to be every night in conference play I suspect, is more about padding stats than building for next year. Fran's loyalty is admirable, but also a bit misguided as we saw last year with playing time.

I love Perkins' game and also think Sandfort needs more PT. The kid has a lot more to his offensive game than just shooting 3's and Fran needs to find some shots for guys inside the arc. Jacking 3's is problematic for a team that gives up lots of runs and doesn't rebound well.

The Clones have some decent wins on their schedule, but they are just 1-3 in their conference, just as we are.
