I was listening to the radio and caught the tail end of Fran's interview with Doug Gottlieb. The last question was was the most interesting. Doug asked what Fran will do to address recruiting in this unprecedented year.
Here are the highlights of Frans answer:
- wants to develop kids in the program and keep them here.
- doesn't like chasing portal guys but said he is absolutely after a big with Nunge's departure.
- Confirmed Garza is going to the NBA, Weezy will be evaluated, Bohannon could come back...
- ... but didn't think the NIL stuff will pass. Still thinks it will happen eventually.
- Thinks the portal may end up working itself out. Talked about how there are 1,100+ guys in the portal and many can't find a school. Many of their schools don't want the guys back so now what?
- MOST INTERESTING - Made a comment about how he had post season meetings with every player and he alluded to the idea that everyone else was coming back and ready for their role. That was interesting because of the rumors with Joe T. and CJF. If he had an indication they were leaving I feel he wouldn't have gone out of his way to bring it up.

Anyone else catch the first 2/3 of the interview?

Good find thanks I’ll have to go listen.

Not to be the grammar police but the first read of “eluded” instead of “alluded” had me worried. I thought you were saying he was eluding the confirmation of guys coming back.

Yeah, normally I wouldn't worry about it, but I thought the same thing on first read.

Anyway, thanks OP. Anyone know if Gottlieb put his show in podcast format?

Glad to hear Fran is going to pursue a big. That said, it smacks of too little, too late. Even before Nunge's departure (it was obvious that his role would be uncertain). It was also obvious that barring some amazing off-season transformation, JO isn't ready either.
Without a decent big man added to the roster, we're going to get pushed around next year something fierce. Probably the year after as well.

No problem. At first I assumed it was just a local radio show since I heard Fran first. It was pretty cool when I heard Doug.

No worries on grammar police. I didn't realize I did that.

Fran will land a big. After having the best big in the country the last 2 yrs, you’d think it would be a fairly easy sell to get 1 to bite. Especially now that nunge is gone, there will be zero competition at the 5. Also im assuming fran knew nunge was leaving soon after the season ended, and therefore has been pursuing post players.

Mostly good news. Thanks. Sounds like Fran thinks there are plenty of guys available. Still could be a really good team with the right big added, especially if Weesy is back and CJ is healthy. I expect to see much more from the freshman this year, and this could be the most athletic team in a LONG time.

Agreed. You'd think any big who saw what Luka has done the last couple of years would know he has opportunity in Fran's system. Just seems like an "all or nothing" kinda deal. If we don't land a solid big...we're in trouble.

What does it mean by weezy will be evaluated
Same as years past. He'll take a pro evaluation and get feedback, and probably go from there.

Regardless of what the scouts tell him, he's better off coming back for a year, unless he's scared because of injuries.

He's not gonna get drafted this year, but if he's truly done with the college game, he could go overseas and start earning money....if that's what he wants.

Also, "IN" before someone counterargues that he will get drafted if he leaves this year. No he won't and I'm not debating it because I'm not going to debate about something that won't happen, and you all can deal with it.........friends? :D

I don't recall Oregon having a solid big.

Assuming we still have 3 pt shooters next year.............this team could be a sneaky surprise.

Not saying expect championships, but it would be a major disappointment to me if they did not make the NCAAs.

A healthy CJ and Weesy gives us 3 pt shooters. The Murray twins and Patrick will keep getting better as shooters and drivers. JoeT is not a natural shooter, but he can make the open 3. Not sure about the two freshman guards shooting, but I expect to see more driving to the basket. A good big is the missing piece.

What is everyone expecting in a player that Fran may recruit? Someone that resembles Luka or someone that is in the 6-9/6-10 range that may be somewhere in the 230/240 range that rebounds, is a rim protector/shoots free throw reasonably well, but maybe has no offensive game, would that matter? Getting a player from the portal or JC will probably come with some worts.

No matter what happens there will be a bunch of posters who question everything from recruiting, to play calling and who's on the court. They will have a hay day with our 50/50 record next year.
FIRE FRAN :)

Amen!

Life is so much better if no one ever questions anything; and everyone just nods and smiles and simply enjoys watching Fran’s sons develop.

That’s the way it should be, for gosh sakes. I don’t know why more people don’t understand this.

Just dumb I guess.

Well, I will be amazed if Fran can land a big that has some All-B1G type talent. It will probably be a Jack Nunge, Ryan K type, which is fine if the rest of the team can provide the firepower.

I think he was probably busy coaching. Besides it has been no contact for some time.

I caught the front end. very complimentary of Oregon, said Iowa was banged up and that Cmac, CJF, and Joe T had surgery when they got back...???

I don't understand Fran's infatuation with being a developmental program. Great if it works, but clearly it isn't getting Iowa to the next level. Literally every program in the country has embraced the portal as a way to supplement their rosters due to recruiting misses, injuries, opportunity to upgrade etc., but Fran acts like it's beneath him. Get it done through traditional recruiting or look to add a guy or two as needed.

Correct. Our overlords can tell us that everything that could have been done, has been done. There is no reason to question :) Shame on us for doing so.

I swear people don't grasp that the reason Fran can get millions every year and that players can get school paid for and the games can be on TV and tickets can be sold is that people -- rightly or wrongly -- care about college sports. As such, people are going to have opinions.

I don't know why you are so quick to write off Ogundele as zero competition. As a coach once told a friend of mine, you can't coach 6' 11". I want to see more of him in game conditions before I decide if he can handle the position. I do agree that we should pursue a big in the portal though.

I am also hopeful Ogundele will surprise and firm up his body next year. But, he is the only Big with really no experience and IMO we definitely need at least two bigs.
