His whole family lives in Indy. He can get out before he's fired (I don't think Beth would fire him quite yet) and maybe even negotiate himself a way to still get some sort of buyout

Correct. Lick’s class was going to be Marble, Brust, Larsen, and Zach McCabe. Brust and Larsen jumped ship with the coaching change, and Fran added Melsahn Basabe and Bryce Cartwright to go along with Marble and McCabe.

Seems like a lifetime ago, but also just yesterday at the same time. Is Cartwright still the best PG Fran ever recruited?

Would you walk away from $4 million?

He will wind up with something it just most likely isn't going to be the full amount. In exchange he gets to frame it as a retirement/mutual decision rather than him getting fired. It's in the best interests of everyone to make this look as amicable as possible.

He also might be willing to accept a smaller number in exchange for getting it all up front rather than having Iowa spread it out over three years, which they're allowed to do under the contract. This could be especially attractive if he thinks he's going to work again in the next couple years and has an offset provision in there.

Fran's no quitter.... but he hasn't shown as much fight this year either.

I always hear that Bohannon is or was not a true PG. That's totally wrong. He wasn't a good defender at the point guard position. But he was a really good PG in taking care of the ball, running the offense, and scoring.
Couldn't get into the paint and break down the defense for easy score opportunities.

And defending at the point of attack is part of true PG play

Take it FWIW, a guy I know--who bats around .500 with this stuff (LOL!) said there is an agreement in place for Fran to step down at the end of the year and take a fraction of the buyout. Both sides agree there's no more juice left to squeeze.

.....supposedly.
I hope this brings his average up…

If you have to pick one position, JBo was a 2-guard.

But really he was a combo guard or a tweener
Jordan tried that position every year and couldn't get open and get his shot off. He thrived at the point guard position. The team averaged 80 points a game. Yes he couldn't get into the paint to break the defense down. But his range gave guys like Garza plenty of room to work.

Doesn't make him a true PG

Yeah we all heard JBO was a 2-guard from posters and finally year 6 he was moved to 2G and he wasn't very good getting open/shooting without the ball in his hand while still being a defensive liability. Got moved back to PG.

JBO was a Point guard---just highly limited because he wasn't a good defender, didn't have quicks or ability to dribble drive to basket. He was Fran's vision of PG...play JBO at PG and try to justify having Connor out there to play a wing position to help move the ball around with another passer.

JBO did win some games for us with clutch shooting/FTs, just not good enough athlete to take the team to the next level---i.e. compete for NCAA tourney run or regular season conference championship.

You're both correct.

Jbo wasnt really a pg but Frans offense doesn't need a real pg, especially with a Garza.

Jbo worked well for Frans offense at that position.

Correct. Not really a PG or a 2.

But the original conversation point was about PG's. So given Bohannon got mentioned, it must be noted that he was not a true PG

I’m sure if you go look at stats you’ll find that he wasn’t even leading assistant man on the team.

His game behavior indicates this could be accurate. Let's hope so. Also, given young DeVries injury/surgery and redshirt for next year could support a deal is done as well. But, all that is definitely a big swag on my part.

Huh? He got plenty of shots off. Prolific 3 pt shooter, one of the best ever.

If I was Goetz, I would offer two options...

1. Retire with a $1.5M buyout.
2. Stay, but be required to replace three assistants with an emphasis on defense.

IMO, he's not going to be interested in option number two.

Somebody I know personally, very very personally, has been saying this since November.

I’m still shocked that nobody back there had heard this news 4 months ago.

And he was hella clutch on free throws and game winners.

Yes! His demeanor, specifically, leads me to believe there might be smoke here.

Agree, I also agree the easy answer for Frans best pg is Thelwell.

Gessel is the only other one in the convo IMO. Mike was a little better defensively but Drew much better offensively.

I think what he’s saying, and i agree, jbo struggled playing off the ball, running off screens and catch and shooting. He was most effective shooting off the bounce and having the ball in his hands.
