Fran will be back….

If I needed to bet money, I'd bet on him coaching 25-26 then retiring.

One odd thing to consider: he's recruiting like a madman right now. If he's such a lame duck, lost cause, why are we recruiting so well?
That's because he's got millions in a bank account to offer unlike before.

That 'bigger' house he bought was a substantial downgrade in price/value. He sold his house in North Liberty for $2.5 million and bought the Iowa City home for $1.2 million. Even though a person can argue the house is larger, it was clearly a downsizing given the disparity in prices.
All his kids will be gone.

If they somehow pull out a couple more wins, get to BTT Saturday, and then miraculously sneak in to the Big Dance as one of the last 4 in - it will have changed nothing and will not change anything next year.
Agree. Anything short of advancing past the 2nd round of NCAA's is still failure, and will require immediate termination.

I was having a pretty good day. When I read this, it sucked 10-11 years of life out of me.

Iowa has 14 wins. Which 6 of these games do you think Iowa is winning? They might steal a couple of these if they keep fighting like they've been... But you're nuts if you think this team is getting to 20 wins without the help of some kind of Big 10 tournament/postseason run.

That said, I don't necessarily have confidence that Fran will be replaced regardless, so I don't disagree on that aspect of your post. That's just me being pessimistic with the university's commitment to expecting more from this program. Hope I'm wrong. I've said before, this is probably partly Gary Barta PTSD.

Better hurry. At these prices they won't last long!

about the house... i don't now IC well enough to know the travel routes, but was the site of jack's accident on the route fran would have to take to get to work every day from his old house? maybe he sold it and bought this new one so he wouldn't have to drive by that spot every day?

of course, i have no idea where neither his old or new house are, so geographically, it may be a moot point. but it could be a factor?

I didn’t know that. Thanks for the information!

I am also counting potential BTT and post season tourney wins, not just regular season. 6 more overall is HIGHLY doable.
Man i Just don't see it. This Iowa team is too dependent on 3 point shooting and most nights it's not good enough.
Worst thing they can do is just keep hanging on. High end mediocrity is a terrible place to be, and that's where Iowa is.
Burn it down and start over.

I made mention later that I included potential BTT and post season wins (you haven’t seen those posts because for some reason the mods have to approve all my posts before they are seen, and that usually doesn’t occur until the next day…this has been going on for almost 6 months…mods, PLEASE remove this restriction).

Wonder if Beth could somehow pull off a succession plan that would ease Fran out after next year, keep our recruiting class and current roster basically intact while keeping Spurlock on staff?

Hire a McCollum as asst head/ coach in waiting/ defensive guru with the understanding that he would ascend to top job in 26?
Keep Spurlock in fold.

Just spitballin but am curious if Frans offense could be melded with more rigorous defense to let him go out with a bang

It cannot work like that, unfortunately.

HCIW succession plans are rare for a reason.

It only ever works if: a) the HCIW is already on staff, b) he has an offer in-hand for a head job somewhere else, but it's a step down in terms of program level and/or it's pay neutral (or less), and c) the current head coach isn't on the hot seat himself.

Example: Let's say Seth Wallace gets offered a head coaching job at an FCS school next year, and he'd get paid the same (or less). So instead of taking it, Iowa offers that he stay at Iowa as an assistant but he is named HCIW. Overall the program is currently winning and Kirk isn't on the hotseat in any meaningful fashion, which is why this could work.

I know many fans want him fired. I never root for anyone to lose their job, but at the same time I would not be upset if he were to move on.

But I don’t see it happening.

I can see the Hawks ending up with 20+ wins this season when all is said and done. You don’t fire a coach for that.

He just bought a bigger house, and he’s been recruiting up a storm. The emotion he showed after the game proves he is still invested in the job and the team. Jack will probably redshirt next year wherever he’s at (if Matta is gone he could end up somewhere other than Butler) so there will be no need to go to those games. He’s not stepping down.

I think he will be pushing to get that Sweet 16 appearance before retiring in 1-2 years.

So….don’t get your hopes up. Fran will be here for the foreseeable future. At least, that’s what I think.
Fran will not make a Sweet 16. Not with Iowa, not with anyone.

Maybe I’m wrong…I dunno. Fran isn’t showing any signs of retiring, and we all know how reluctant the University is to fire coaches.

If (big if) Fran is fired it will be because of attendance, not results.

Edit:
In his 13 BTT appearances (2020 was cancelled),,
Lost first game 7 times
Lost second games 5 times
Won the championship once (three years ago)
So, there is a 45% chance they MIGHT win one game but I would bet the under on that.

Actually, there is a 100% chance they might win one game, and a 100% chance they might win more than one game.

Similar to Dr. Tom giving him what is essentially a lame duck year. Is probably the worst outcome the program can have. I like Fran, but it’s time to move on. We understand the best will get under Fran is a one and done. Especially with the lack of ability to defend.

If Fran comes back that seat will be on fire. Going to have to do some major portal shopping. At least two guards and possibly two bigs.

Fran doesn't know how to recruit guards and we would still have to play Fran ball---with no defense next year. If the buyout is only $4 million, time to make the move this spring.

It won't matter. The dude can't coach defense or rebounding. Players don't matter
Don’t disagree it would be a lame duck season. Not sure how easy it would be to recruit for that anyways.
Iowa did lame duck years with Dr. Tom and Alford both hurt the program.

Don't forget, but the bottom 3 teams in the BIg 10 do not participate in the Big 10 tourney. Iowa could easily be in the bottom 3.

Getting to 20 wins is quite a stretch goal---they might not make B1G tourney and FRan's record in BTT is usually a loss in 1st game.
I don't know about NIT invite..who really cares about NIT wins.
