These videos are fun if you want to learn the details about what Iowa tries to do with their 3/4 court press. The last video is in Spanish but it still gives you a sense of how they execute the press at game speed:

Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing. If the goal is confusion, you have definitely seen it the last few games. Lots of indecision by the offensive team.

Thanks for the post. It's great to see some x's and o's and a good example of how basketball is far more than just watching where the ball goes.

Imagine what that press is going to look like with a 7' wingspan point guard as part of it. :) Add in some athletic 6'5", 6'6" guys like Hutton and Moss! And the depth with Ellingson, Flemming, Bohannon? (I don't really care who starts) Then we've got pieces like we know we've got now at the small forward in Jok and Baer.

That's eight guys for three spots that all should be athletically at least as capable of defense as we play now! Even if somebody leaves that is more than enough depth.

And behind them, Uhl, Wagner. Jones should return. And our newbies Cook, Kriener and Pemsl?

I don't know, but I don't see too much reason to be concerned about next year except the experience factor. It all hinges on what we expect I suppose. I expect we will still have a team very capable of an NCAA Invite and as the season goes on in 2016/17 it will amount to how much we progress.

Strengths to offset the lack of experience will be increased athleticism, depth, more muscle inside. It'll come down to can we match our shooting from this season, and is the chemistry there. Obviously the guys will have to work hard, and finding a leader is important.

You often hear Fran say things about a player like, "he gets what we're trying to do" (either offensively or defensively) or "he is having trouble getting what we're trying to do." These videos show the kind of details he is talking about and the kinds of things you hear him coaching during in a game if you are sitting close enough. If a younger player doesn't grasp the concepts in this press and execute them, the whole thing breaks down and the kid gets sent back to the bench. You see Wagner getting more PT than the other frosh because he grasps concepts like these and maintains the discipline to stick to the plan as coached.

Unless you are bringing in top classes, experience is so important in basketball, as you've seen from this year's team. I think Iowa is going to suffer some major growing pains next year. We lose probably our 4 best defenders and probably what, 60-70% of our scoring in B1G play?

I have a lot of optimism for the guys coming in/redshirting but unless we really get 2-3 to be significant impacts right away (PG/PF), it will be a year of learning.

100 more likes if I could give them. It can take guys time to understand the concepts.

Just remember though that a few short years ago we won 25 games with two true freshmen point guards and a true freshman at center. Just because we haven't seen much of these guys doesn't mean they aren't learning. This is a weird year with four seniors and the amount of understanding they have is important to what we are trying to accomplish.

Like was said, a guy that doesn't "get it" is going to be detrimental, even if he has talent. So not surprisingly our depth ends up including guys like Baer and Ellingson who were around to learn for a year.

Next year, if no one leaves we will have ten returning players. That isn't all that inexperienced as far as learning the system.

The 30 second helps this become even more effective. If it takes a team 10-15 seconds just to get their offense started, that doesn't leave them a ton of time to get through their options on the play.

Dan...I like your "signature" postings on a thread like this...I call them "Wise Sage" posts where you pretend to talk about BB and the team...but actually it is about how much you know...and want everyone to know, you know. Cool...takes a while to read them all...but great fun.

Yep with a shorter shot clock the press takes many teams out of the rhythm they want to play with. Then they have to hurry to get a shot off.

Vs Nebraska you heard this a lot of the announcers. Saying shot clock was already half gone and they haven't even made it to the 3 point line yet. Hard to get rhythm and find a open shooter.

I remember watching Siena's win over Ohio State in the 09 NCAA tourney, Fran's team played fast and with a lot of pressure defense. I think we're starting to see the fruits of his recruiting and the type of players he likes. The only piece missing moving forward is point guard.

The shot clock being dropped down to 30 seconds is huge for a team like Iowa.

Fran's eyes had to light up when the new rule went into effect.

That is true. Seemed like we had some really good defensive teams with Whitey, but we tended to break down late in shot clock and it ended up raining 3's. Wisconsin Gasser used to be a pain in butt.

Fun to watch these videos. Can see why Fran is such a good coach. I checked on-line and there are DVD's 4-sale that are extended versions.

The match-ups where our press has excelled has been against the Purdue kind of back courts. I'm not sure our press is the answer against Indiana ( tho they can get sloppy with the ball) or Maryland..

It's a great tool to have in the tool box, but there are times when you need a drill not a hammer.

Fran has more than earned a rebuilding year, even though that's kind of a bummer for Jok. However we also thought this year might be a step back, so hey.

I never thought this year would be a step back, not with the 4 seniors. I agree next year will be. However, with the emergence of Baer I'm feeling better about it. I think Jok will have a monster year when he is THE man.

Next year is a definite rebuild with growing pains, but I now have optimism seeing the play of the bench this year. Good forward play could propel team to an 11 seed. Point guard is chief concern, though.

Since Fran has been here, there are always surprises from the players each year. May, Marble, White, Olaseni, Uthoff, Gesell, Jok, Uhl, Baer. Let's hope the guards give us some pleasant surprises next year. Guards will be: Ellingson, Williams, Fleming, Moss, Bohannon, with Jok as a swing between 2 or 3.
