Anyone listen to his comments after the game? Can I get a summation of what was said.

Here's the Cliffs Notes version.

Coach Fran said that to have a record of 10-10
in the Big Ten Conference is tremendous. This
is one of the toughest conferences in the nation
and I am proud of our record. Next season with
the addition of my other son to the roster we will
continue to play .500 ball in the conference.

Iowa looking to remain staticly good enough and never great. Normally 21-10 would seem better but not after this year's end of season debacle.

It is pathetic that he cannot recruit a PG or a team that at least has enough quickness to play zone. Lots of folks around that would like to coach in the BIG.

He was hired to do what he’s done before. Rebuild a program that was in the dumps. Mission accomplished.

Now we need someone to evolve the program, before it needs rebuilt again.

And take it easy, I know the Alford area ‘next level’ comments are coming. It was true then and true now though.

This. Fran is a great rebuilder, and that should be commended, but it’s time to hand it off to a younger, hungrier, coaching staff who have recruiting ties to the Midwest.

The midwest should not be the lone area of recruitment, but I agree with most of what you say. One caveat to your post is if Fran stays and he hires at least 2 new assistants, replacing Kirk and Sherman. Those 2 need to retire as soon as March 21 or 22, whichever day Iowa plays and loses their first round game in the NCAA tournament, barring the unthinkable.

I would agree with hiring new assistants. I only mention Midwest ties because it will always be our main area of recruiting. Things have to change, that much can’t be argued.

It’s not the lone area, just the major one.

Not sure either of those guys want to retire. They are well paid and have 0 pressure to perform. Who knows the assistants may be far less delusional than Fran. Francis has earned his keep on the recruiting trail. The other guys are just collecting paychecks. I see nobody on the staff who can coach D.

Iowa lost to a good rec league team today. Nebraska deserves great credit for never giving up and pulling out a nearly miraculous win. But Iowa . . . Wow.
A Nebraska kid who was 2-12 ALL YEAR was playing. And he made TWO crucial FTs, doubling his season total.

Iowa had a 16-point lead and played dumb enough to give it up. There's really nothing left to say, but that won't stop most of us from trying anyway.

Another frustrating, embarrassing end of season collapse.

Get a defensive specialist. Both Dillard and Speraw have made enough coin to retire well. This has all been FRan's show. You can tell by the type of assistants he hired--he want's Yes men that won't question him and are just hanging on for the nice paycheck. It probably took some major stones by Francis/staff to get Fran's buyin to recruit a legit PG like Touissant....Next year, what is Fran going to do with Connor? If Connor can't shoot better, he's a 2 minuter per game role player on any team coached by someone that doesn't share the same DNA.

And all Fran could say after he was asked how he thought of being 10 and 10 in the Big Ten.
His response "In this league, that's tremendous" and that's after losing 5 or their last 6 and only 2 of their loses against teams above them.
This is as good as it gets, enjoy it while you can.:(

You watch teams with good PG's and they close damn games. Winston for MSU. Edwar

Hard to see his shot getting any better since it is a flat corkscrewing line drive. Mechanics bad. Doesn't shoot in rhythm at all which means no hope for him flowing in transition and pulling up. He has elevated Christian Williams about 50% in my mind after seeing him play.

Such a major hitch In Connors shot too. He hardly gets off the ground and can miss wildly. Should be a better free trower too.

Fran went from 4-14 to 10-10 by making changes.

If we decide to move on I am fine with it.

If not he deserves the benefit of the doubt that we will see more adjustments to the program.
Fran also went from 10-8 to 4-14 by making changes.

He did a good job rebuilding the program, but his win totals of 12, 12, 10, 4 and 10 (of 20) the last five years do not project to improvement by making subtle tweaks. This year the big change was improving the defense from atrocious all the way up to really bad.

Fran is going to be around for 3 more years. That said, I didn't see much change. It is the same defense/offense he's always run. Same assistants. Major change is they went out and got a backup PG ahead of Jbo graduating, but that doesn't take effect until next year and we don't know if Fran will even play JoeT ahead of his Kid.
We did RS a lot of guys..that might pay off. Didn't help Ellingson, Moss a huge amount.

I hope the Midwest is not the only consideration. Iowa really should consider the value of a superior recruiter over the Xs and Os experience. A young (under 45) African American assistant coach at a blueblood program who works with 4 and 5 star BB players daily knows more about the talent level it take to be a consistent winner. Mens' College Basketball is not brain surgery. The person should be intelligent enough to communicate well to the public as well as to his players and recruits. A lot of good assistants have taken over the HC jobs and done well enough. Iowa needs to break their selection mold and take a gamble. Too bad, LaVall Jordan (Butler/ ex-Iowa with TL) is not in consideration and probably won't leave Butler.

Signalling that Iowa is willing to offer the opportunity for a less HC experienced AA to be Iowa's next HC and let him build his own team may help Iowa attract the BB talent it needs to win a conference championship and be an annual top 25 team with the occasional Sweet 16 (or better) challenger. Raveling brought in a lot of talent BB player players during his three years here at Iowa. The fact that he could not adjust to Midwest living as a single Black male in a state over 90% White is reason to maybe search for a person from the Midwest or someone with Midwest exposure.
Having a network of support would help the early stressful years. Mizzou's Cuonzo Martin is having a tough time improving the program but he is at least seeing a few 4 and 5 star kids on campus for visits and has signed a number of those kids. He is trying to rebuild Mizzou. It could happen.

It would be great to take the next step. Who does Iowa go after for the next coach? Need to get it right but that is no guarantee.
This was the terminology used when Tom Davis was let go & Alford took over if I remember right.
I'm ready for the next step but it's all a gamble as I see it.
Really don't want to be compared to like Nebraska in Football.

You make very valid points. Once again, I mention the Midwest because that will always be our main recruiting territory. Remember where George’s top contributors came from.

Roy Marble Flint MI
Gerry Wright San Bernardino CA
Jeff Moe Indianapolis IN
Ed Horton Springfield IL
BJ Armstrong Bloomfield Hills MI
Kevin Gamble Springfield IL

George didn’t have the ties to the Midwest he just did whatever he did to connect to those kids(possibly shady?) There’s a crap load of talent in the B1G footprint that we are missing out on. We need a younger, energetic, don’t care what their race or ethnicity is because plenty of white coaches recruit well too.

We know Fran is staying, he’s not getting fired coming off a tournament appearance, so it’s really up to him to hire a couple of new assistants who are really, really good at recruiting. If he doesn’t, well, the results will be the same old, same old for the foreseeable future.

True, but par is still considered average in golf. That's why it's called par.

not to split hairs (then he continues on to split hairs) but not exactly.

PAR is the number of strokes an accomplished player should complete the hole in...not an average one. It's the "goal", not an average outcome. An "average" player does not make par consistently...a really good one does.

Either way...yeah. Iowa basketball is "meh"
