Free the Lee!

Or you could figure out the minimum number of matches required to be eligible for the NCAA Tournament, that's the likely answer ( or if I'm not mistaken he could not wrestle at all until the Big Ten's and take his chances).
There is no minimum number of matches to qualify; however, there is a minimum number required to earn a spot for the conference per weight class.

With 2 torn ACLs, don't use him until one has to.
Is it correct that all he HAS to do is compete in the Big 10s to be eligible for the NCAA Finals?
Or does he have to have a certain # of duals before the Big 10s?
Been away from NCAA wrestling for awhile.

I may be wrong but certain # of matches to be seeded at Big Tens-- thats all..then he has to "qualify" so if the Big Ten gets 6 allocations for example he would have to finish top 6 or get a wild card.

I think this year is eerily similar to Spencer’s high school senior year.

Where an obviously injured and sub “100%” Spencer Lee lost to Desanto (whom he etched in the second period the year before).

The big difference was that he had to go then, as it was his last year in high school.

This season, he still has a redshirt!
They probably try to preserve that until the very end.

A 90% Lee will be a toss up with Suriano, Arujau and Glory.

A 100% Lee would not be in jeopardy of losing to them (but for the fluke).

Hope he’s healthy!!!
If not, the rest of the team needs to many up, like Brand’s says “Next one in”.

Iowa can still win it holding Spencer for next year and it would probably make Iowa the favorite for next year as well.

Ybarra and Wilson/Assad need to make a jump and Young and Warner need to get back to we’re at the end of last year.

Idk if this is true. He was planning on wrestling at WTT if Gilman didn't medal at the Olympics so I'm thinking the decision makers are confident he can win this year.

This is not the case. In high school he tore his acl in February and also had mono so there was no conditioning to be done. Look at the Covid year and last year prior to big tens. That’s how Spencer will look this season.

Didn't realize Lee still had a redshirt.
Given the extended ACL surgery recovery time, he probably should have had at least one fixed last Spring, with the other ASAP afterward. Then utilize the redshirt to heal. Don't know, not an orthopedic surgeon.

He can show up at big tens with no matches and as long as he finishes in one of the qualified spots he is good to go. Big ten coaches do the seeding.

You actually believe that? A 90% Spencer Lee is clearly the favorite in those three matches. A 90% Spencer Lee might be the best version of Spencer Lee we've seen in college.

Or are you saying all three against Spencer over a 7 minute time frame? If Spencer can't tech/pin two of them and outscore the third within that 7 minutes, then he loses. In that case we might be looking at a tossup.

They got 8 last year. Don't know if they ended up with more (assume they did since 11 were ranked).

Will Lee wrestle anyone that will give him a challenge until ncaas. Will they even risk it or will he just get tune up matches that only last 2-3 mins.

So technically couldn't Spencer wrestle his first match of the season at NCAAs? As long as Iowa had someone qualify the weight at BIG 10 tournament. So if the B1G gets 8 allocations for NCAAs and Ybarra finishes top 8 at B1G tourney then spencer could wrestle NCAAs.

I don’t think so, plus I fairly certain they are not leaving Spencer’s 4th title possibilities up to Ybarra placing top 8 at the 10’s

No, Lee must wrestle at B1Gs and place high enough to capture one of the qualifying spots for that weight. There are also “wild cards” but I doubt someone who hadn’t wrestled all season would qualify.

With a redshirt, he may want to wrestle unattached at a tournament in January or February where he gets four matches! Important to see how his body responds! Glory and Suriano seem like tough outs for anyone, not named Spencer Lee, when healthy!

It doesn't matter if Iowa qualifies a spot or not. Obviously if they do it increases the chances to get a spot but they don't have to qualify one to take one. If Ybarra wrestles at the Big 10 tournament then he is our guy. Spencer not part of the equation.

I thought…
They may limit his number of matches to try and preserve a medical (hardship) redshirt.

I know you cannot compete over a certain amount.

Selfishly, I would rather they win it as a team this year without Spencer and have him come back next year to lead the threepeat.

Hard to say I guess. They'll have a heck of a time winning it this year with Spencer (on paper we win it, but that's not how the real world works so we'll see I guess).

I'm pretty confident Spencer wrestles a match or two this weekend. like...really confident.

have any of you seen him lately in the room?
My gut says you're right. I am more puzzled why Kem isn't listed but I also don't know anything.

I haven’t been able to get there since the start of the season but I’m liking the shit out of this comment. I thought we’d see him go against ISU so this isn’t a huge surprise, but damn that’s good to hear. The Lee is free!

There was an instagram video of him drilling hard with Sorenson a day or two before ISU dual. Looked like a 80% effort drilling session. He was shooting and finishing hard.
