Freedom Caucus: Cancel NC election and give state to Trump

Oh FFS. This is always where MAGA has been going and we've now got a member of Congress saying out loud one of the ways per how they'll maintain permanent power and end democracy.

They're normalizing things that should not be normalized.

It's like the whole Stop The Steal nonsense - they all knew it was false, and when their supporters stormed the Capitol, they realized they could no longer control the people they had lied to for months on end. And too many of them admitted privately that they could not reverse their positions out of fear for their own lives and families from the misinformed mobs they had created.

And they STILL have not learned from that mess... THAT is possibly what is most disturbing here.

I feel sure Mr. Harris would be thinking quite differently if a pol from North Carolina proposed similar action after the Baltimore bridge collapse, for instance.
I respect Pat McHenry and his stance does not surprise me. Hell, even bathroom-bill McCrory realizes how dangerous this proposal is to voting rights.

Under the Constitution, state legislatures have the power to choose how to allocate their votes in the Electoral College. All 50 states assign their electors based on the popular vote of their citizens.

North Carolina election officials have attempted to address challenges voters are facing in the state’s western counties. They’ve added new early voting sites and expanded the ability for displaced voters to obtain absentee ballots outside their home county. The Trump campaign has supported measures to ease voting in light of the hurricane.

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) told reporters on Friday he hadn’t heard about any plans for the state Legislature to take the steps discussed by Raiklin and Harris. Asked about Harris’ comments, McHenry said, “It makes no sense whatsoever to prejudge the election outcome. And that is a misinformed view of what is happening on the ground in North Carolina, bless his heart.”

The retiring congressman described a “massive amount of work” going into ensuring everyone in the storm-affected counties can vote.

I’m confident we’ll have a safe and fair election in North Carolina, and then everyone that wishes to vote will have the opportunity,” he said.

The leaders of the N.C. Senate and N.C. House — state Sen. Phil Berger and state Rep. Tim Moore, both Republicans — did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the Trump campaign.

Democrats weighed in on Harris’ statements throughout the day.

Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the Freedom Caucus chair’s comments during a media gaggle Friday, saying: “America deserves to have leaders who respect the importance of one of the pillars and foundations of our democracy, which is free and fair elections, and that they are not manipulated by elected leaders for the sake of their own political future or their own political strategy for how they themselves want to succeed.”

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, insisted the state’s “electoral votes will reflect only what the people say at the ballot box.” He got some backing from Democratic state legislators and even from his GOP predecessor, former Gov. Pat McCrory, who said that following the path described by Rep. Harris would be “a grave mistake.”

I'm seeing zero push by "Democrats" to deny these people impacted by the hurricane a right to vote; the GOP position would be "tough shit, the law says no absentee ballots and no early voting".

Democrats rightly recognize that a natural disaster should not remove your voting rights and accommodations are necessary. Not the GOP of today, which is why I won't vote for any of them, anywhere, until they get their shit straight.

Didn't the DNC cancel their primary and give the nomination to Kamala Harris?
I'm certainly not suggesting that the State of North Carolina cancel their election and hand their electoral college votes to Trump, but Democrats are in no position to complain about it. Glass houses and all that.
As a matter of fact the Democrats did not cancel their convention, and you’re an idiot to try to make that claim. Pretending to be stupid is NOT a winning argument l

And it is horrifying that you would not simply state that this is absolutely wrong. It’s a significant character flaw that you can’t do so.

I didn't say they cancelled their convention. I said they cancelled their primary. I could say you are the idiot for not knowing the difference, but I have a strict policy of not engaging in personal insults on political matters. Joe Biden received over 14 million votes to be the Democrat nominee for President. Kamala Harris received zero.

They did not cancel their primary, and doubling down on stupid is no better than pretending to be stupid. Also, when your character flaws endanger our country I damn well will point them out. As should all good Americans. We need to shame people like you.

NO one was deprived of their right to vote for Biden. They can vote for him next week. It is incredibly stupid to compare a primary for a political party to an election for the presidency.

That is very different than ignoring the votes in an actual presidential election (not that it will happen).

I stand by my statement in another thread that many Trump voters are not evil, they are MAGA because they are too stupid to realize how foolish that is. Your statement sure belongs in that crowd, I hope you are smarter than this normally.

You know, I gotta say, that statement from that guy may have been one of the most bizarre things I've ever heard. I mean, ever.

Recall the horror and contempt when the Democrats cancelled the Florida primary and assigned the delegates to Biden?

The gall to propose this with the reasoning to not disenfranchise voters is peak GOP.
The argument actually has merit. But, as you point out, the side making it has no credibility.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) said Thursday that such a step by North Carolina’s Republican-controlled Legislature “makes a lot of sense” given the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene in the western part of the state. Counties in that region are expected to vote heavily for Trump.

“You statistically can go and say, ‘Look, you got disenfranchised in 25 counties. You know what that vote probably would have been,’” Harris said during an exchange with a speaker at the dinner. “Which would be — if I were in the Legislature — enough to go, ‘Yeah, we have to convene the Legislature. We can’t disenfranchise the voters.’”

Reminder: the Harris being quoted is not Kamala.

Is there any way to address the meritorious part of the argument?

I'm thinking about the lengths the world's largest democracy goes to to make sure every eligible voter has a chance to vote. I'm talking about India, where they go to the trouble of sending the ballot station to isolated rural voters.

Surely we can do something to help those suffering hurricane disruption vote if they want to vote - without throwing everybody else's votes out.

No.

The primary season was long over when Biden dropped out.
I'm a registered Democrat in Florida.
The Democratic party in Florida cancelled the primary.
The Democrats only put 1 candidate on the ballot, knowing that under Florida law that means no primary would be held.

"Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried on Wednesday defended the party’s decision to place only President Joe Biden on the ballot, which meant Democrats didn’t have a presidential primary election in the state."

I wish Democrats wouldn't try to rig electoral processes, and would instead let people vote their preference.

No. The DNC held their convention, and nominated Harris.
Biden, who dropped out, told his delegates to back her.

Did you ever pass a US civics course in high school?
The stupid shit they say makes you scratch your head. Cancelled the primary?

Our biggest priority should be doing a better job of educating our citizens. We have too many low IQ individuals.

Who else was still in the race? If there were still active candidates, you might have a point.

BUT, the claim was that the primary was cancelled to give the spot to Kamala. Kamala wasn't running then. So my point is still correct.

The move to leave Rep. Dean Phillips off the primary ballot left the Minnesota Democrat enraged on Thursday. In a statement first provided to POLITICO, Phillips, who has launched a longshot primary bid against Biden, accused Florida Democratic Party officials of rigging the primary.

Single candidate, Soviet style, elections are something the Democrats embrace.
It's how Obama ensured his first election, by getting his opponents removed from the ballot.
It's what Obama and Hillary presented to the world as a 'democracy' in Yemen, when they took the former VP, agreed upon by the gulf monarchies, and offered him as the only candidate in an 'election' to cement the failed regime change.

I’m also old enough to remember 2020

The Washington Examiner reported on December 19, 2018, that the South Carolina Republican Party had not ruled out forgoing a primary contest to protect Trump from any primary challengers. Party chairman Drew McKissick stated, "Considering the fact that the entire party supports the president, we'll end up doing what's in the president's best interest."[147] On January 24, 2019, another Washington Examiner report indicated that the Kansas Republican Party was "likely" to scrap its presidential caucus to "save resources".[148]

In August 2019, the Associated Press reported that the Nevada Republican Party was also contemplating canceling their caucuses, with the state party spokesman, Keith Schipper, saying it "isn't about any kind of conspiracy theory about protecting the president ... He's going to be the nominee ... This is about protecting resources to make sure that the president wins in Nevada and that Republicans up and down the ballot win in 2020."[149]

On September 6, 2019, both of Trump's main challengers at the time, Bill Weld and Joe Walsh, criticized these cancellations as undemocratic.[150] The Trump campaign and GOP officials cited the fact that Republicans canceled several state primaries when George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush sought a second term in 1992 and 2004, respectively; and Democrats scrapped some of their primaries when Bill Clinton and Barack Obamawere seeking reelection in 1996 and 2012, respectively.[151][152] Weld and Walsh were joined by Mark Sanford in a joint op-ed in The Washington Post on September 13, 2019, which criticized the party for cancelling those primaries.[153]

Kansas,[154] Nevada and South Carolina's state committees officially voted on September 7, 2019, to cancel their caucus and primary.[7]The Arizona Republican Party indicated two days later that it would not hold a primary.[155]These four were joined by the Alaska Republican Party on September 21, when its central committee announced they would not hold a presidential primary.[156]

Virginia Republicans decided to allocate delegates at the state convention.[157]

The Nevada Republican State committee chairman said the committee would meet on February 23, 2020, and bind their delegates to Trump.[158]

The Hawaii GOP voted to cancel its primary and bind its 19 delegates to Trump on December 11, 2019.[159]

The New York GOP on March 3, 2020, decided to cancel its primary after neither De La Fuente, Weld, nor Walsh submitted the required number of names of their delegates in order to qualify for their ballot.[160] The delegate candidates bound to the president were thus automatically elected.

Other states were instead encouraged to use winner-takes-all systems to award delegates instead of using proportional allocation "to avoid dissent" at the convention.[8]

When insults are all ya got...

No, it's just simplest because your post is so bad, the argument against it is so obvious, it is a waste of time to point out the obvious to someone who clearly isn't going to listen.

You are so far down the rabbit hole you will fight will all of your might to try to equate anything the Democrats have done with an outright attempt to thwart our Presidential election; eve though this means defending the indefensible. But you think pretending to be stupid is a winning argument, so none of it matters.

Because you're an idiot.

I linked an article explaining how you pushed off bullshit onto the board.

You linked an article that omitted key facts, that were already known and not in dispute.
The article called Fusion GPS, the outfit that created the bogus Steele Dossier, 'independent researchers' who found the mystery pings.
At the time the article was written that was an established fact, discovered by the Inspector General.
They left it out to (obviously with great success) mislead you.

There is nothing in the Mueller Report about the Alfa Bank ping hoax, because the FBI recognized it was crap.

All you've done by linking that article is highlight your own ignorance on the subject, and clarify how and by what you've been misled.

It's easier to fool people than convince them they've been fooled.
