Maybe it's just me, but I've come to think that red-shirting for reasons other than injury or transfer isn't of any real value anymore. The exception might be for players who make significant physical transformations while on campus, but how many of those have we really had in the past several years? In todays game, incoming freshmen are more prepared physically than ever before. With summer travel ball, they've faced much better competition, as well. I think you're better off getting them on the court, even if its just for a minute or two in blowouts.
If you include Ellingson, we have six new scholarship players on this year's roster. The reality of today's NCAA is that at least two of them will not compete their senior year at Iowa, due either to transfer or early entrance into the NBA (wouldn't that be something?) With what sure seems to be an uptrend in our recruiting fortunes, I suspect Fran and staff will be very reluctant to exercise 'developmental' red-shirts going forward.
