I know there aren't a lot of fans of FRL here, but in the last episode they did about ten minutes on "Free the Lee" and one of them (I still don't know who is who on the show) made a great comment about Lee from the top position. "When he gets your wrist you're not getting it back. It's his property until he decides he's done with you."

I thought that was a great description. I'm not sure I've seen anybody as dominant on top who wasn't parallel riding (ie: riding with legs in). Kid is brutal.

Ban Basketball says he is not that good on top and hasn’t wrestled anyone...

Wait.............What? BanBasketball was on FRL?

Last FRL was like 30 min of Iowa ( Lee, Marinelli, Warner) Willie even convinced CP that Warner’s stock doesn’t go down with the loss. Warner can be right there with anyone, but shows freshman vulnerbilty in losing that match. Midlands should give us more perspective but he can go with anyone as far as I’m concerned.

They also made a decent point that Warner, after being taken down to trail by one, had time and was in position to escape. But he stopped wrestling and just looked over at his coaches who were screaming at the ref for calling the TD.

Two pet peeves of mine. First is breaking the rule of wrestling until the ref stops you. In tournaments there are whistles being blown, horns sounding, coaches screaming, fans yelling; you block it all out and wrestle until your ref makes it clear the period is over.

The second is complaining to the officials during the meet. The only time to complain about officiating is later that night at the hotel or on the bus. On the mat concentrate on what you can control.

Also, I suppose, it covers another pet peeve; wrestling defensively to protect a lead. Sucks for the fans and I think you have a better chance protecting your lead by continuing to attack.

But the guys were right that this doesn't reflect on his abilities. It was a learning experience that should serve him well in the future. I'm anxious to see how he responds at Midlands.

Frankly, this is probably the most excited I've ever been about Midlands.

who the hell wouldn't be fans of FRL?

I enjoy listening to FRL but it's so hard to find now on the new site layout. I always just Google flo wrestling FRL to find the link.

I'm a big fan of podcasts in general, so FRL is great for my wrestling fix. Appreciate the casual banter/BSing/hypotheticals. Shout-out to the couch as well. :)

FRL is pretty much every Tuesday and Thursday unless the guys are busy traveling to cover an event. I just follow Flo on Twitter and when they tweet the episode (usually an hour after it airs) I download it onto my phone. There have been over 250 episodes to date and I have not missed a single one. I'm an FRL nerd, I know.

l'll be interested to see what position his first few top 20 opponents choose. How many d1 coaches would be confident enough (maybe foolish enough) to put their guy down against Spencer? How much do d1 coaches respect his ability to ride/turn without seeing against a top college guy?

Personally I think he will wind up being similar to Steiber on top (eventually). Really solid bar/half and cross wrist tilt series. How dominant will Lee be on top in his true freshman year? I think that depends on how well he has grown into 125.

While I'm at it: Here's to hoping we see Lee vs Suriano. People like to mention that those two have split in the past. What they forget is that Spencer was in 8th and 9th grade for those two match-ups (obviously Suriano is only one year older). Since Spencer didn't wrestle post season folkstyle events his last few years of hs (he was too busy making word freestyle teams) and Suriano hasn't wrestled much on the freestyle circuit, we haven't seen the match up since. Neither guy has really been tested yet this year, Rutgers first semester schedule hasn't hit any aa contenders yet.

I'm torn on seeing that matchup at Midlands. I'd much rather see Lee get three more months of light duty before really straining his body. I'd guess 90% of his matches can be just like last weekend; maybe 30 to 60 seconds in neutral, and a couple of minutes of mugging his guy from on top, for a total of two to four minutes. Seven minutes of being pushed by a guy like Suriano worries me from a health perspective.

I believe if he makes it to the finals TnT might choose to forfeit, and I would be on board. Three of our best wrestlers are nursing injuries. Have to find a way to get them all to NCAA's in one piece.

If Iowa chose to forfeit in a Midlands Final for a healthy wrestler I would be absolutely stunned and severly disappointed.

There are degrees of "healthy." if that match takes place I'd be less concerned about who wins and more concerned about him finishing the match without a limp.

If the Lees, TnT, and medical say that's the way to go, why should we as fans be disappointed? Shouldn't we defer to the people that are in the know - none of us have any idea what's best at this point.
No. TNT are not above criticism. If you’re not disappointed in missing an opportunity to see Lee vs Suriano, I really question if you even like wrestling.

If they free the Lee this year, in the end it's about getting him to the Big10's and NCAA's as healthy as possible. If he makes the finals against Suriano and they choose to forfeit the finals, I would be disappointed, but I'd get over it. Winning a tourney title as a non-point scorer means very little compared to what you are trying to accomplish by pulling the shirt. If he's a point scorer or it's a dual meet and we need the points to win, that's a different story.

Sounds like you're the guy to keep us updated on any pertinent info about Iowa they talk about.

Thanks in advance for your future reporting to us...........

You forgot to mention the Lee’s and medical in Pablows post to make a point about the Brands once again. In Pab’s scenario, all three are in a agreement...you would go against that?

I think if Lee made the finals, he goes. If I’m worried about pushing to much, I’d FFT the semis so there can at least be a final.

I don’t think there is a medical person in the country that would say, go wrestle live against the #5 guy in the semis, but then you have to forfeit in the finals because it might be too tough. That’s why I ignored that silly point.

If it ends up being a medical decision, it would be made that day after the semis. Not premeditated.

I like what you say here. But if we are putting him out there, we had better plan on wrestling Suriano. If Spencer isnt physically ready to do that then we shouldnt wrestle him. Unattached or not.

With that said, if his knee and overall conditioning are holding up in our room with the likes of Gilman, then I would like to think he is ready to roll with Suriano, or any one else for that matter.

GO HAWKS!!
