Future of Iowa Basketball

Did you forget Dale Jones I think he's going to be a real asset next year
Agree with this. Next year we MIGHT have a better #1 and #2 scoring option than this year. I will be anxious to see if a couple of other guys develop enough to make them better offensively next season.

Agreed, while some on here want to be a pessimist and throw next years team under a bus, I want to wait until I see the product on the court before I believe it will be a rebuilding year.
The four seniors on this years team accomplished much during their time here, but had one flaw that they couldn't overcome, that being clutch, but they made Iowa relevant again.....and for that, they deserve my admiration. Next years team will have the opportunity to define their own legacy and maybe they will have the athleticism to overcome what Woodbury, Gesell, Clemmons, and Uthoff couldn't, we'll see......
Until next year, we have a meeting with Temple on Friday to look forward to, it's good to have Iowa in the NCAA tournament every year, and not just a 8th or 9th seed. Thanks, Fran McCaffery, for getting Iowa to the most wonderful time of the year.....

Let's see, I have been called an entitled baby, an idiot, bad fan, stupid, moronic, and a few others I can't recall for stating facts like we choke in late games, Fran hasn't addressed obvious needs through recruiting and that our guard play has been and continues to be a significant problem.

The name calling is part of the message board experience, so whatever. What I never get are intelligent responses. The same people who jump straight to name calling and disparaging others basketball IQ offer nothing of value to the forum. Tell me why we don't need to improve our guard play. Who is going to score if Uthoff and Jok are held in check or cold? Why do we lose close games at an alarmingly high rate?

Help myself & others understand why we should not question whether Fran can do more than make us 'better than when Lickliter was here'. To be clear,. I am not a fire Fran guy nor do I think his seat is warm. I am disappointed in his recruiting (again) given none of the freshman were capable of contributing this year and other than Cook, I see more of the same coming in next year with no help at 1 or 2 (again).

As some other posters have said we need the big city kids to go to a level above where we are now. Much as the Iowa kids are nice guys they aren't what's needed. No more skinny Iowa kids!

Pretty sure everyone has pretty much agree with you that Fran and Iowa need to get better in some areas. That much is pretty obvious IMO. How about you give them a chance? Why are you writing off the incoming class and the previous classes before we even see what they can do? I think there is some serious potential and will wait to see how they perform next season.

My response to you was in regard to the ceiling of 18-20 wins. We have surpassed that ceiling in 4 of frans 6 years already while 2 of those seasons were pulling Iowa out of the darkness. You have yet to respond to that, so why do I continue arguing with you?

Perfect example. You question loading up on Iowa kids and the 'What about Paige, Barnes, Hinrich, Collison, LaFrentz, to modern day Jok and Uthoff' crowd steps up. Nobody is saying to stop recruiting Iowa kids, What I am saying is that banking our future on a PG from Marion, Iowa who puts up big numbers against vastly inferior competiton

1) I am not calling for Fran's head or proclaiming his seat to be warm. I like Fran the person, Fran the pretty candid coach and Fran the X and 0 guy. Yes, late game struggles, but that is in part due to lack of dynamic guards.

2) You are correct on Fran's wins, but what has he done in the BTT or NCAA tournaments? Not much. Again, better than Lickliter, but same as Alford minus BTT success regarding NCAA tourney. I guess Fran has 1 win and SA had 0, so advantage FM.

3) Where did I write off freshman and incoming recruits? I have been lamenting CW sitting on the bench since the big ten season started like others. I have wondered why we bring a big class in and not one of them can help this year. Has Fran not seen these guys for 4 years to realize Woodbury, Gesell, and Clemmons are not guys you can count on to get you buckets.

4) If you think Ellingson, Fleming and Bohannon are going to be difference makers, I have some Devon Archie bobble heads to sell you. I am good giving Fran time to develop players, but this 'under the radar' project stuff is not working. Go get some juco players or tap into the transfer pool. Maryland has Duke and GT transfers. Michigan has D3 shooter and IU kid. MSU has Forbes and WV guy. If those teams see value in it, then why don't we? Where would those teams be without those guys? But we can't use them here I guess.

I think Fran is a hell of a coach, but it's a joke that we start 3 guys who have struggled offensively since they set foot on campus. People can talk about teams scheming against Jok and Uthof and they are right. That would not be so easy to do if we had anyone else capable of scoring. Tell me where I am wrong here. Appreciate the dialogue.

Agree with this. I think Fran has a higher ceiling over the long haul than Dr Tom. I loved Dr Tom but I lean more towards Fran being able to bring in a higher grade of talent. Certainly not all they way there yet but it seems to be building. I too can't see what the point is to be down on a class yet when they have not stepped foot in the program yet. In addition while I have had frustrations over a big portion of this senior class at times, they HAVE been in on the front end of the rebuilding process, have won a bunch of games and now a third straight NCAA.

I think the future is pretty damn bright and while at times it may seem clunky, the over all projection points north to me.
