What do you think the Hawks should do on offense this week to offset the loaded box and blitzes we are going to see?

Do we see us try to run out of more 3 and 4 wide receiver sets? More screens, slip screens, 3 TE?

I think if that happens we'll see the same thing we saw in the first half against Maryland with screen passes, utilizing the TE's in the seam, getting Wadley to the edge, etc to open up the run game. In the 2nd half I think KF just didn't feel the game was in doubt and didn't do much to make them pay for loading the box.

A lot of shotgun formation due to CJ's immobility. Quick passes. Absolutely MUST use our TE's. Once Indiana's defense is forced to play "honest", then gash them with our running game.

I think it really depends on cj. We have heard he won't be 100% the rest of the year, but where does is he at?

In saying that, I think a 75% cj will throw quick passes to avoid sacks and scrambles. I hope he connects on more passes this week that imo he failed to do last weekend.

I would do 3 tes and make Indiana beat us in trenches early on... We have to keep their offense off the field. Play action would be good too... But again where is cj at to effectively roll out and scamper well?

Bottom line: give cj easy to make throws, don't abandon run, and I would hit it early to establish it, keep our offense on the field a lot.

Do you think cj in his current state is better passing out of the gun or under center?

LeShun Daniels will get a bigger workload this week

TEs will be targeted more; its now or never for Duzey to get rolling.

Slants and quick outs to the WRs.

Iowa is bound to score at least 5-6 TDs but they will aim to do so on 8,10,12 play drives in order to take some time off the game clock so as to (a) keep Indiana's offense on the sidelines; and (b) give Iowa's defense opportunities to rest and re-organize.

indy is statistically the worst pass defense in all of NCAA. About 10 yards worse than their next closest competition, kansas.

As much as Iowa does not want to make this a shootout, CJ is going to have to throw the ball. More quick plays. Don't have CJ holding the ball long.

Has anyone watched how the other teams have played defense against them? The played MSU tough for 3 quarters. I'm hoping for a couple more ints.

I wouldn't mind them bringing out the formation with the jet sweep, but just fake it a couple times to get the defense thinking and moving in different directions. Even a fake reverse. But don't put Parker in the game and automatically give him the ball on first play. Set it up. With the blocking of our TE and WR, this play could be a very good option to get to the edge quickly.

I honestly forgot we have Parker on the team. Have we run the jet sweep at all this year? I know we hurt Indiana last year with it.

I'm more worried about how we are going to defend their offense. Are we going to play any nickel? Or expect our LBs to handle all obvious passing down responsibilities. The way to beat is is simple: spread us out, take advantage of our 2 safeties being 15 yards deep, and just play the numbers game. 10 vs 9 for the first 10 yards at least. I know ppg is a great stat, but Maryland showed the way to hurt us. We can handle 2 TE, but 4 WR gives us all kinds of trouble. Wish we would keep safeties closer to the line of scrimmage sometimes.

I completely disagree: Run the ball, then run it some more. We must keep our defense fresh and their offense off the field. A few quick 3 and outs and it could be trouble

Once in ISU and was a negative yard play. Few plays later when CJ hit Vandenburg for the big gain past mid field. I wouldn't mind seeing an end around with Tevaun. Remember what he did last year to UNI. Get the ball in his hands more.

I don't see the jet sweep nearly as mush nationwide as I did last year. I think coaches are catching onto it as they see it more.

CJ's lack of mobility will really decide the gameplan. If he can't play action or waggle, it limits what Iowa can call out of sets. Therefore, we see more shotgun...and it's major blitz time if they don't run out of shotgun.

I want more Wadley and Mitchell, because Daniels isn't the pass catcher those two threaten to be.

Iowa needs to stop the IU running back and get pressure on Sudfeld. I have faith in our back four to defend the pass. Cannot let Sudfeld sit back there all day with time. The IU running back is talented and we need to contain him, can't let him get going on Iowa or we lose.

I go with a fairly solid balance with an edge to more run than pass. I would have CJ both under center and shotgun BUT showing both run and pass out of dropping back and run and pass out of the gun. Keep them guessing and don't tip your hat based on formation. Also, if they are going to put 8 in the box then there needs to be moments when #4 in on the field and he is thrown deep to. I would like to see CJ come to the line on a 3rd and 3 or 2nd and 3, see that defensive formation and shift back into the gun. You only need a couple of seconds to get the ball lofted far enough down field and have out guy go get it but give him a shot at making a play because more often than not he will. I am not talking about sitting back and throwing a deep ball every play but if you have the combination of a bad defensive backfield and 8 men in the box, you have to find a way to take a few shots.

On defense....do what you do boys!

Maryland scored 7 points on the Iowa D aided by 2 15-yard facemask penalties. They were able to move the ball at times, but I think it's a stretch to say they "hurt us". The best way to defend the IU offense is to sustain drives and keep them on the sideline.

Like most games if Iowa runs the ball well and stops the run they should win oh and don't give up big plays on defense. However, it may be hard to control time of possession because Indiana gives up a lot of big plays on defense. I think Iowa plays well against Indiana's offense because they play sound fundamental defense and Sudfeld is not a running QB. Last year they defended him well it was Coleman and the running game that killed Iowa.

I'll ask this. Is Penn states Backfield that much better than iowa's? If not they won't s score much on us. We should be able to run on them on the edge with ease. I vote just keep pounding the run with the occasional deep ball.
My fear is that Indiana ' s O tires our D out.

According to their own fans, their front seven is solid. Most opponents have passed to set up the run. They are that bad at pass defense.

MSU was missing 5 of their defensive backfield in that game so it's hard to judge. PSU game I believe Indiana was using their backup qb due to injury.

They ran the ball down our throats and we couldn't stop their QB from running if our lives depended on it.

Did you even watch the game?

You both are right. Tale of two halfs. How you see the game may show if you are a glass half full or half empty kinda person. They did run the ball well but turned it over to our defense after doing so. Technically yes the only non special teams td was after 2 facemasks

On O:
High efficiency O. Stay on schedule - move the ball systematically. In the process, as many have indicated, use up a lot of clock. It's also important that we score TDs. Indiana is a team that can score in bunches ... so it takes off more pressure from the D if we have more of a buffer.

Thus, to achieve the above, we're looking at working our running game - using play-action occasionally to keep defenders from cheating too much. The play-action is potentially lower percentage ... but we need them to worry about defending the field vertically as well.

Otherwise, we need to exploit the short game ... using WR and RB screens based on what the Indiana D shows us. Otherwise, still using plenty of short passes in order to keep pressure off of Beathard.

On D:
A lot of what we'll do in terms of formation will be similar to what we did against Maryland. Maryland tried to run on us by spreading us out. As a result, we were forced to defend the run with only 5 or 6 in the box. Indiana is going to spread us out horizontally as well. Unfortunately, their RB is really tough ... and, unlike Maryland's passing game, Indiana's passing game is actually a threat. Thus, we're going to have to respect the pass AND respect the run. Thus, we'll be forced to still defend the run with 5 or 6 in the box - my guess is that we'll always keep at least one-high safety ... but the other safety will have to come crashing in if they read run.

Unlike what we did against Maryland, we'll likely play more nickel. We'll probably play more press coverage ... at least with some safety help (one or two high safeties). Phil Parker won't want us getting beat deep.

Going off of scheme - Indiana's O will make it a little harder for us to lean too heavily upon our base D. I'll be curious about how much we'll remain in our base against them.

After the NW game, you can trust this staff will have a solid plan in place for whoever is next on the schedule. This week will be no different. They keep it simple and the players are playing fast and attacking.

Actually it was about 3 drives in the whole game that they did any damage. In the second half they had one drive where they gained about 50 yards before punting, their TD drive where they were helped by Iowa's penalties and the drive where King intercepted their QB. That was it. They didn't do anything after that, and they didn't do anything before those drives.

Rewatch the game. Maryland was effectively running the ball against us when we were defending the run with typically around 6 hats in the box. Because we had fewer hats in the box, I suppose that some of the players felt that they had to do "extra" in order to make a play ... and it got them caught out of position ... as a result, they got us on some counter-action runs. Also, not surprisingly, with the QB run option ... going against 5 or 6 hats in the box ... when they optioned off the DE, that then left them with 6 guys to block 4 or 5 hats. They owned the numbers advantage - and they had success.

I would be far more concerned if they had the same success against us - running against 7 or more hats in the box. We wanted to make sure that we prevented the big pass play too ... and we did. We also benefited from 3 INTs in the process.

On the 2nd face-mask penalty, we had them on 2nd and 10 ... and if Jewell didn't grab his face-mask, we would still have had Hills for a loss and they would have faced a 3rd and 11 (or 12). They obviously would be in 4-down territory there ... but it is within the realm of possibility that we would have got them to turn it over on downs.

Don't get me wrong. In the 2nd half, the Iowa D didn't play like they wanted to ... and they most definitely feel like they have things to clean up. However, that is par for the course. It's not like the D is all that veteran. They still have plenty of room for improvement!

I think we go all Ohio St and bring out the 3 TE sets (hello Duzey) and go heavy run/screen mixes to control tempo and go deep every now and then to keep them honest

Parker did a jet sweep at ISU for about a ten yard loss. Think the next play was CJ hitting Vandy down the middle for about 50 yards

I didnt read all of the posts but I think we need to do a LOT of raider.. We get good pressure with that package and Sudfeld isn't very mobile..

Offense

1. Run left
2. Run right
3. Run middle
4. Run right again
5. Playaction pass

Defense

1. Safeties play soft, keep everything in front of you
2. Force a couple fumbles
3. 2-3 blitzes
4. King INT
5. Knock out Sudfield

Special teams

1. Touchbacks on most KO's
2. Miss one XP
3. King 35 yd punt return

Sorry, I don't play troll games with Da Coach..... And yes, I watched the entire game and saw the Maryland offense score a total of 7 points on a drive where they were bailed out twice by a face mask call against Iowa. Maybe you should try watching sober next time?

PSU played IU'S backup QB. Big difference between him and Sudfeld.

Indiana's top RB, Howard, was also out against PSU. PSU was only defending a shell of what IU's O is capable of being. Iowa will be facing them at their very best. We better bring our "A"-game.
