4 teams are just fine. The Big 12 screwed them selves by saying One conference one true Champion and then they couldn't name who the champion was after their was a share...

My opinion but TCU was the better team at the end of the regular season.

I would agree with this, a Bye is absolutely not the way to go. You make it 8 or 4.

The "OSU didn't deserve to be a playoff team because of the Va. Tech loss" was a legitimate argument in the BCS era. The same thing could be said about TCU getting passed up despite winning at the end of the season. But this is a different era, different criteria, and different considerations for rankings.

The committee said from the get go that they would base the rankings on who they thought was the best team at the end of the season. Not who deserved it the most. Now sometimes the difference between the two is a very fine line. FSU would certainly fall into that category. But how they felt about the Seminoles was also reflected in the 3rd playoff seeding. With the old BCS they would have been ranked first.
