My fellow geezers will recall that Gene was a standout basketball player on Maury Johns' nationally prominent teams of the early 1960s. He had a quirky jump shot akin to Jim Furyk's golf swing and like Furyk, he was very effective. Extremely hard worker on the court. When he did come out for a blow, you marveled at his ability to make it back to the bench, he was so exhausted.
He stayed in the Des Moines area after he graduated, first as a teacher and then as a horse breeder.
R.I.P., Gene
