German tourists detained by CBP and held for weeks

Damage to foreign tourism? Really - ? Do you have the stats?
Does this mean they won’t be clogging up I-4 any more? Getting gored by bull elks in national parks out west? Hogging the overlooks at the Grand Canyon?
Taking over the beaches in Hawaii?
Glad you asked! Sources below.

Last month airplane visits from Canadians was down 13% and car visits down 23%. Those are massive declines. And that was before all the latest nastiness kicked. Overseas visits to the US declined 2.4% in February. I doubt that is going to come roaring back with all the latest stuff hitting the news all over Europe. You might not like tourists, but they are the reason you don’t pay state taxes. Hopefully Trump comes to his senses (he won’t).

Tourism is a net positive for the US economy. If you don’t see that then it is pointless for us to discuss this further.

They have this…

For American citizens born abroad, the official document that serves as proof of U.S. citizenship is the Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA), issued by a U.S. embassy or consulate.

So I’m not worried.

This guy wasn't worried either.

Until they cut his SS benefits.

For him to get an explanation, he had to become his own detective of sorts.

He thought back to an experience he had two years ago when he first went to a Social Security office to apply for benefits.

“The first person I talked to at the Social Security Administration told me that I was not an American citizen,” McCaffrey said.

McCaffrey was born on a U.S. Army base in Germany, where his father was stationed for active duty.

He has an American birth certificate—officially stamped and sealed by the federal government.

“I was on American soil,” he said. “I’m American. She told me I was going to need to hire a lawyer, get a naturalization before I could even apply for Social Security.”

But when he returned another day with his birth certificate and passport, a different employee told him there was no issue.

“Got a different person, presented my things to him, and he says, ‘I don’t need these. You’re fine. I don’t know what. She’s just misinformed.’ And I’ve never had a problem with anything until [Tuesday],” McCaffrey said.

Then he remembered something he had recently seen on TV.

Elon Musk, the billionaire in charge of DOGE, spoke about Social Security during an interview on Fox Business Network.

In the interview, Musk suggested, without citing evidence, that non-citizens in large numbers are receiving Social Security benefits, and called for them to be purged from the system.

“[Federal entitlements] is also a mechanism by which Democrats attract and retain illegal immigrants, by essentially paying them,” Musk said during the March 10 interview on Fox Business. “If we turn off this gigantic money magnet for illegal immigrants, then they will leave.”

That made McAffrey wonder about his own situation.

“I think they went into Social Security and suspended all foreign addresses, whether you reside at home, born on them,” he said.

The Canadians who come and spend winters in Florida are here by November so maybe last month is a one off.
I don’t mind having visitors here. I just want them to remember to go back home in April. ☺️

There have been a number of news stories on this. Canadians seem to be actively boycotting US centric products, visits, etc. now some of the BS photos are fake, but the stats are real. European media is awash with stories like the one about the German tourist. I can’t see that helping. Europe overall has a skew to the left of the US (so European conservatives are a bit more liberal than American conservatives for example) and it seems they may take this opportunity to send a message to us.

Time will tell how lasting an impact this all has, but the early signals are not good.

The Vice President stated that he thought Trump might be America's Hitler. The fact that he subsequently sold his soul because it was politically expedient doesn't change that. Most Republicans knew what Trump is and voiced their opposition initially, then fell in line to preserve their own power. This is not unlike the rise of the Nazi party in 1930s Germany.
The Democrats defended the Capitol police only when it was politically expedient didn't they? Before Jan 6th they pushed to defund the police for months and months after George Floyd took a dirt nap.

Will the Canadians start buying Canadian cars now, instead of American? Oh wait.....

When did Democrats "push to defund the Capitol police"

Link?
Did you not watch the news coverage after the George Floyd overdose incident in police custody. Every blue city in America was pushing to defund the police. I believe New York City cut their police budget by $1 billion.

As noted in another thread:

Habeus corpus rights are older than the Magna Carta.
They are enshrined in our Constitution BEFORE even the Bill of Rights.

If Trump and his "AG" can disappear people "because of tattoos" w/o any right to contest those accusations, and defy a federal judge questioning them - they can "disappear" anyone the same way, because once they're on a plane, they are claiming the judge no longer has jurisdiction.

This is about as dangerous as it gets, folks. If US judges will not stand up to this, then our rights as citizens are effectively "over".

My college roommate and her husband went to Europe on their honeymoon after they graduated law school in 1975 and while at a beer hall were arrested because a German woman sitting near them called the cops and said they looked like two members of a crime gang active at the time (Bader-Meinhof). They got thrown in the clink despite legit ID and left there for two days while waiting to be released.
True thing - the guy’s father was a very senior FBI officer and the American consulate in Munich got into deep doo doo for not getting them released immediately. If they hadn’t had a parent who was “connected” they said they would have been locked up much longer.
We went on a trip to Acapulco in the early 70’s and were detained by cops pointing machine guns at us because someone at the Mercado said we didn’t tip them. When we and the other couple we were with gave them each $20 all was forgotten.

Scary stuff happens everywhere.
Hmm, I must have missed them being detained by immigration officials. You

The automotive industry in Canada consists primarily of assembly plants of foreign automakers, most with headquarters in the United States or Japan, along with hundreds of manufacturers of automotive parts and systems.

Canada is currently the thirteenth-largest auto-producing nation in the world, and seventh largest auto exporter by value, producing 1.4 million vehicles and exporting $32 billion worth of vehicles in 2020.[1] Canada's highest rankings ever were the second-largest producer in the world between 1918 and 1923 and third-largest after World War II.

Automotive manufacturing is one of Canada's largest industrial sectors, accounting for 10% of manufacturing GDP and 23% of manufacturing trade. Canada produces passenger vehicles, trucks and buses, auto parts and systems, truck bodies and trailers, as well as tires and machine, tools, dies and molds (MTDM). The auto industry directly employs more than 125,000 people in vehicle assembly and auto parts manufacturing, and another 380,000 in distribution and aftermarket sales and service

You are a moron

On Friday, the Trump administration tortured a man from New Hampshire.

Fabian Schmidt—a legal U.S. resident, an electrical engineer, a father—was detained at Logan Airport. They stripped him naked. Denied him food, water, and medication. Threw him in a cold shower.

To this day, the DOJ has not filed charges against him. Why? To coerce him into giving up his green card. A man with no ongoing legal issues. A legal resident of the United States just trying to go home.

This is third world behavior—it's cruelty for cruelty’s sake. It’s a warning shot to every immigrant, every student, every doctor, and engineer who might want to come here: You are not safe.

This is not America.

Yeah. You’re totally in the clear. Do you have the original long form birth certificates? Was an auto pen used?

Unfortunate mistakes will be made.

Totally the same. Happy you shared.

I’m the Canadian who was detained by Ice for two weeks. It felt like I had been kidnapped

"It was surreal listening to my friends recount everything they had done to get me out: working with lawyers, reaching out to the media, making endless calls to detention centers, desperately trying to get through to Ice or anyone who could help. They said the entire system felt rigged, designed to make it nearly impossible for anyone to get out.

The reality became clear: Ice detention isn’t just a bureaucratic nightmare. It’s a business. These facilities are privately owned and run for profit.

Companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group receive government funding based on the number of people they detain, which is why they lobby for stricter immigration policies. It’s a lucrative business: CoreCivic made over $560mfrom Ice contracts in a single year. In 2024, GEO Group made more than $763m from Ice contracts.

The more detainees, the more money they make. It stands to reason that these companies have no incentive to release people quickly. What I had experienced was finally starting to make sense."

FYI - one judge already backed off on a decision, because it would have pitted one armed element of the government against another. If that continues, we are fooked.

This is EXACTLY what I'd predicted was going to happen months ago. And the MAGAs poo-poohed it as "overly dramatic". Most of those idiots are pretty quiet now.
