In the first half, we had 30 points through the first 10 minutes. After Gesell got his second foul and went to the bench, we scored a whole 8 points over the last 10 minutes. Don't think a lot of that isn't a credit to Gesell. He may not have been scoring, but he leads our offense and without him we're not the same.

I agree with this. Offense looked terrible with him on the bench and it drives me nuts that Fran doesn't trust anyone to play with 2 fouls. Yes the offense didn't score the last 10 minutes at a good rate, but they got good looks for the most part. Can't believe how many open looks were missed today.

Gesell was horrible. Jok and Uthoff were on fire in the first 10 minutes. That didn't have much to do with Gesell. Then, Iowa scored 10 points in the last 10 minutes of actual game play. Most of which came from the FT line. Plus two costly TO's late. Plus his constant dribbling. He was bad.

Our shot selection is absolutely awful. It's hard to believe we have so many kids that are outstanding students.

Uhl is a head case. Plenty of talent, but doesn't rebound like he wants the ball. I almost hate to see him make a shot as he immediately tries to do too much and costs us a couple of possessions.

Thank heaven we didn't turn it over. Jok better come to play against Nova or it will be a long night.

I like that they went to Jok at the end when they knew they would foul. Of course he choked, but at least made 2.

He about lost it for us multiple times at the end.... Some total bonehead choices!

We will miss Gesell, but his effectiveness is hampered by the poor outside shooting from the 2 position. If either could shoot, we'd be fine, so it's not all on Sapp. I cannot understand how Gesell has been so incapable of developing his shot though.

I just about threw the remote at the TV when, unpressured, he throws a b.s. lackadaisical bloop one handed pass for a turnover in overtime. What's a senior point guard doing making that pass?

No way can you blame this on MG. Watch it closely and pay attention late in the game and our players stand there waiting and waiting and waiting. What is he to do but what he does? Beat him up all you want he didn't foul a 3 point shooter at the end of regulation.

50 seconds left.....temple almost guaranteed another possession. Lets go ahead and waste 20+ secs so they can go for the last shot. Great choice mike.
Hmm I can never make my ugly shot at the end, but maybe that'll change this time. OOPS!!

He's a good guy and has his strengths but as far as I'm concerned he doesn't belong anywhere near the court in the last 2 minutes.

I dare say missed layups (again) were the one thing that almost cost us this game. We get plenty of open shots in the offense, but when you miss 10 layups (honestly, I quit counting halfway through the second half, as I was too stressed out) it's going to make things real close. If we even make half of those layups, this game isn't even close and no one is complaining. Seriously, we went up til about 5 minutes in regulation with ZERO turnovers. Give the kid some credit. He's struggling with his shot, but he still makes the offense go, especially in transition. If you want to blame our offense for being stagnant, blame the coach. Mike's just running the offense that's been set up for him.

What were we the 2nd half. 1 for 17 for 3's? Can't blame MG for that. Hawks win now let's do it again and quit beating the players up.

You "just about" threw your remote at the TV? You suck as an Iowa fan.

Note to Fran. Please come up with another plan to score on the last shot. The one you run doesn't work. Heads up play by Woody but Hawks got lucky.

This. The reason Jok and Uthoff were hit and cold had nothing to do with Gessel.

I can go along with this post!!! Watch closely tho. Gesell with the ball and 4 guys don't move. He has to do something with it no doubt about it.

Yep, they missed about twenty points worth of layups. I was about pulling my hair out.

That is incorrect. Gesell went out at roughly the 12 minute mark and the Hawks were up 8 points. Iowa actually played great between the 12 minute mark and the 8 minute mark and held a 12 point lead at the 8 minute mark. Gesell is a weak link.

Oskaloosa must be Geselll's mom. Gesell happened to play 10 of his 32 minutes when Jok and Uthoff were on fire. Playing both Gesell and Clemmons at same time is the anchor that is killing this Iowa team. Play one of them at PG, other on bench, and get a bigger lineup out there. Gesell is better at running team, but worse defensively and worse at dribble drive. Both are bad shooters/fT guys. Gesell is the worst guy I have seen in clutch--4 years and he has missed, muffed, or been swatted every opportunity.

This is one reason why I say the real issue with this team is at shooting guard. Playing Clemmons and Gesell together is horrible.

Totally agree, they are both very limited offensively and other teams know it. When they were playing their best earlier in the year Clemmons was hitting 3's and driving into the lane getting some layups. Teams couldn't slack off him so Jok and Uhtoff got better looks.

Both Gesell and Sapp are good defenders, thus why Fran likes to play both at the same time.

Your second sentence is one we joke about often. JU's final two threes are perfect examples.....

Agreed. And this HAS to come down to coaching. MAKE them move and get open.... I don't care if you have to practice it for 2 hours straight...sick of watching the same thing and end of games/halves. We are at about 1 for 100 on the year for scoring with our last shot of either half, but just keep doing the same thing. It maddening!

That was just unreal.

He made about 6 or 7 passes in that game that were all risk no reward. Most of them Iowa guys managed to catch but even when they did there was no reason to have made the pass.

OP just gave Gesell credit for Jok starting 3 for 3 from 3pt line and Uthoff going off in 1st 10 minutes. Temple tightened up the defense on Uthoff/Jok and gave them less space. The fact that woody, gesell, clemmons can't hit an outside shot is why offense goes to crap after opposition realizes they only have to guard Jok and Uthoff.

The reason JOK and UTH can't get open is because everybody know MG can't score, finish, make ft's, etc. The more athletic another team is the more MG's weaknesses are on display. Sapp has his weaknesses as well, but he can at least create a shot and play defense. MG makes the most of what he has on defense, but he not really that good. Athletic players make him look silly.

I am still amazed at the number of fans who are blind to his lack of ability. Woody is much more valuable to this team than MG.
