Gilman opens up about Iowa

Part about Iowa starts about the 19:40 mark.
Thank you, I didn't want listen to all of it.

He can ramble on all he wants about "just supporting his soldiers (at PSU)" but the fact is, he's just a pompous asshole.

He admits to throwing shade and running his mouth, while simultaneously taking offense to his rejected "olive branch"

You can't have it both ways, bub.

There's some good stuff in the interview, but he sure knows how to drone on.

Agreed, takes a little dig at Spencer to later in the interview. Talks about he (Gilman) didn’t go to turkey but thought maybe he should incase Spencer injured a pinky or a knee. Thought that was real classy.

I didnt take that as a dig at Spencer.
He was just saying the likelihood of Spencer getting hurt or not qualifying the weight was next to 0%, so why make the trip? Plus admitted he wasn't in a healthy state of mind.

But that's the only positive thing I'll say about him!

Yeah that’s fair, i probably took that out of context.

It was no dig at all. UsaW wanted to send another wrestler just in case something happened since it was the last chance to qualify the weight for the Olympics

IF we are being honest, The kid was a GREAT HAWK!!! NO IOWA fan is going to like someone like that leaving, and certainly NOT going to like the way it went down!!! It seems to me, that he was the one who burnt the bridges and was somewhat set back by Spencer Lee taking over!

That being said I am not an insider to this info so it is only my point of view. Other then that, I believe he does say some good things about his time at IOWA and understands it is what MADE HIM!!!

He is well spoken, smart, he talks about a BALANCE between what he learned at IOWA and F*** st which I think is very important. Dan Gable was a MASTER at "pushing the buttons!!!" I would say early on when I coached it was all PETAL to the METAL, but you have to learn, when to turn it UP and when to turn it DOWN!!!

You also have to understand your athletes!! Who needs a slap in the face before a match, and who needs to sit and relax so as not to get over AMPED!?!?!??!

I like his "grip" on coaching from what he said, will be interesting to see how it plays out. Few other things 1) the amount of Coaches who come from IOWA!!! You have TONS of talk about TnT and getting replacements , but remarkably, EVERYONE wants IOWA guys!!!

2) talks about reading the BIBLE and in the same part of the conversation, reading about Vikings???? Vikings, much like Pirates, the Gangsters in the MOB, Raiders, etc..... were no HEROS!!!!! I understand the fascination, I get their cool ships, great seamanship etc.... but IF I am someone of strong Faith, I might wanna read about TRUE HEROS!!!

Try PATTON'S 3rd ARMY, the 101st, The "boys at BASTONE!!!!!" etc......

"... you are what you always will be, so choose wisely". Once an Iowa Hawkeye, always ...

"I don't know where things went wrong other than me leaving for a rival school and throwing shade at them".

LOL
And he was "throwing shade" at former teammates (and friends) that were legitimately still competing at the NCAA level.

Of course those guys are pissed and have every right to be. I get that TNT are difficult and burn bridges, but when you don't even have a relationship with former teammates maybe it's not them, maybe it's you.

Lastly, for a guy that claims to read the Bible and philosophy daily, he sure doesn't absorb the material. It's actually a bit concerning how intellectual he is one moment and completely oblivious the next.

Sure you can. You would not have to extend an olive branch if you did not do something wrong in the first place. That sounds like a bit of maturity on his part.

Gilman's chapter in life as a Hawkeye was a good one overall. Tough as nails. I rooted for him hard to win a title, and defended him on the boards when the trolls attacked him endlessly.

What Gilman did after he was a Hawkeye is his business as far as I'm concerned. He has managed to make the two largest fanbases both love him and hate him. And now he is working on the 3rd. Impressive really. When he becomes the head coach at Minnesota or ISU in a few years people are going to wonder how he did it!

A bit of a Maverick..

That is mature, but then it's also immature to be offended by the rejection of the peace offering.

Again, you can't have it both ways.

The Brands need to make amends if an olive branch was extended. It sounds like they have with Ramos. They can with Gilman. Everybody was butt hurt when he left and things were said. All parties grow up and move on. Sounds like Gilman is growing up. But some of his attitude is what they taught him. The Brands need to get rid of this holier than thou attitude. Be the bigger guys and if they preach being Christian then make amends and move forward. The way they act anymore I can see why people think they are assholes.

Ask around probably way more to the story

Dear Gilman:

You're an a-hole.

"It's good for the sport of wrestling. No regrets. They can shove it for all I care."

It's not good for the sport of wrestling to be an a-hole. It might be good for the sport of wrestling to be an ambassador for the sport, to be a role model to kids and show them how to act like a decent human being. That's not a job requirement, so you get a pass. But no, being an a-hole isn't good for the sport, and you claiming that it is to excuse your a-holishness just reinforces what an a-hole you are.

You appear to care about, and have loyalty to, one person. That's fine too, but let's call it like it is.

At some point in the future, when you realize there are other people in the world, people who have helped you, mentored you, befriended you, perhaps you will begin to shed your a-holishness and be a better human being.

If you need an example of what that looks like, I'll offer up Barry Davis. You would do well to emulate his humility and kindness, which don't diminish his competitive spirit or intensity. He, too, left the Iowa program, and never uttered a bad word about it afterwards. You don't have to be an a-hole to be a great wrestler. Understanding that and reflecting that in your own life would, indeed, be good for the sport of wrestling.

Sincerely,

The Rest of the World Outside of Thomas Gilman

I was somewhat seeing where he was coming from... Like throwing shade as a way to show that you are onboard at PSU.

An immature way to get the new team to like you, but whatever.... But then he continues to double down and throws out the "they can shove it for all I care".

Just not the best career/life choice to burn bridges over and over. But maybe he'll learn eventually.

Besides the pettiness, he seems to be doing well and will grow as a coach.

Gilman has chirped at Iowa a bunch since he left. Tom and Terry have not said one public, negative word. I'll re-tell a story about Brands that some of you might not know: I was at a cookout at Tom's house when I first got to Iowa as a guest of a donor who bid on it. After the food, we sat there and talked wrestling and were told no wrestling questions were oob. For example, the guys around the table got after Tom about the idea of bringing in Pat Downey. He explained that. We also got after Tony Ramos and how he left the club. All of us were angry with TR and would have been receptive if Tom was as well in a relaxed, private setting just between us girls. Instead, he said "I love Tony Ramos. He was the face of our program. What kind of coach/man would I be if I turned on a guy because he was angry? This kind of thing happens in every family." Now all of this wasn't performative for the cameras...it took the air out of the TR "hatin" if you want to know the truth. Now I'll be the first to admit the Brands can be hyper competitive aholes when in wrestling mode. I don't know Terry, but if you ever get the chance to sit down with either one and shoot the shit away from the mat, it might just change your perspective on a few things.

I understand why Gilman left Iowa and went to PSU. I also know a little bit of the story. But Gilman has got after Iowa a few times since he left and the fact that this interview is on the eve of a prized recruit's decision should question the timing and the intended audience because it's not Hawk or PSU fans.

I would like to know the constitution of this "olive branch" extended to the Brands, and how he knows it wasn't accepted.

Agree 100… I think many learn (as we get older) that maybe some bridges should not be burned …

Tom was 100 percent supportive of Gilman’s move to PSU. I feel like if there is animosity in anyone’s part Gilman should look in the mirror - hard … at the coaches and program that gave him a chance and positioned him to succeed as an adult … Any animosity - I think - starts and ends with him.

There are plenty of fans who haven't accepted his BS. A whole bunch of high dollar donors got scolded by ISU Karen for being mean, Gilman might need a fireproof orange sweatsuit.

Awesome post and well said / explained.

As for the timing of this interview, it’s Flo wrestling. They are click whores, no problem there, that’s what the internet has turned many companies into. There’s a reason they put a mic in Front of Gilman for damn near 30 mins. Gilman was bound to say something, that’s his motif. It’s what he does. Flo just clipped it and put it out. Doubt they had anything in mind. Even the title of the interview is designed to draw clicks. Maybe 10% of this interview was about Iowa.

This is the long version of Thomas Gilman is full of shit. Period.

He was a Hawk so I cheered for him but never was I a big fan of his and I don’t think he’s one of the top five lightweights we’ve had in the last decade for sure and he falls WAY down the list if we go back to the 80’s-90’s. His running into the opposing teams huddles was when I had had enough of him so when he left for PSU I was sure he was going to stir up crap their as well. He was never going to beat Spencer and he knew it.

He's definitely in the top #5 for past decade.
Spencer, Cory Clark, DeSanto, Gilman, Ayala.

Push out to 2014 then Ramos jumps in and pushes Drake out. If Drake can claim a title he'd knock Gilman back off the list IMO.

But that's just me splitting hairs.
