Gilman Statement

I wonder how bad a racist term Jap really is in current times. This "historical context" happened over 70 years ago (very nasty how Japanese Americans were treated) but has improved ever since to the point where the animosity between the 2 are almost nonexistent. Clearly, there are some who are still offended by the term and for that reason, Jap should not be used....just add the 2 more syllables needed to say Japanese.

White, Yellow, Red, Brown, Black! Did I miss anything? OK let's move on as this has nothing to do with actual wrestling

I agree and guess in the future he will....I'm old enough to remember there being alot of WW11 veterans around and with what they had been through it was no surprise they had animosity....my grandpa was one of them....these college age kids would have no idea....obviously someone thought it wasn't proper or was offended and he did the right thing....apologized and moved on

I guess I can think of a handful of other slurs worse then Jap. Gilman obviously didn't mean it to be derogatory. Those who get offended by words need to toughen up a bit and quit being SJW's. You want to be really offended try listening to rap music, your heads would explode.

Very good post. But I disagree with equating Jap with the N word. Jap can be totally innocent (using it as shortened form of Japanese) or can be used to show racial separation (like WWII). The N word is never innocent (unless you are black, which I disagree with).

This distinction of the word Jap is why you and I know Gilman is innocent. Now if Gilman were to use the word "gook" or "chink"....no different from the N word
Just curious why you have no problem spelling out g**k and c**** yet refuse to spell out the other. That's kinda weird isn't it?

Gilman didn't attend Iowa for the education, cut him some slack.
A lot worse he could have called Rei Higuchi.

johnstown you do realize your posting style is similar to laces, guns, spreadwide and jammies, just saying if you don't mind being thought of the way as those guys i guess it's alright by me.

"African American rapper" lol...Such a wonderbread, er Caucasian/European-American way to say it ;)
I'm curious as to what your alternative to Äfrican American rapper would be. "Black rapper", perhaps? Ok alternative, but African American is at least as predominant, if not more, in public discourse over the last twenty years.

Since there are a lot of "white" rappers (better, now?) it was a needed adjective in my post.

Unless, of course, you are opposed to the term African American or find it amusing, which I'm not suggesting you do, I guess your reply is just a humorous attempt at indicating you do not agree with my post.

Like I said, just a bunch of white guys getting offended about being told that they are offending another race or nationality. I'll ask you directly. Would you be comfortable addressing a Japanese American you don't know as a close friend as "the Jap" or saying to one of your buddies "the Jap in the blue shirt" in reference to a guy sitting at your table at an event or in a room with you?

Honestly, I wasn't thinking about the reasons why. I just did. I hope you are not offended

Why is it ok to type gook or chink, but not ******?

FIFY. If I were to guess, about 99% of the folks on here are white. Yet several have lectured on what qualifies as offensive to minorities because well, one ate at a Japanese steak house one time or some of his best friends are black. So even in this conversation, whites get to dictate how others should feel. Smacks of paternalism is all and I find it ironic.

Do I refer to someone as "the Jap dude?" No...but my Dad might as in "The Jap Car." It's generational. But the offensive linguistics seem to change every few years. My father in law calls himself Mexican, is officially a Hispanic, non white (although that's changing to Latino), but his granddaughter is offended by anything other than Chicano. My wife calls herself an American. See the pitfalls here? I guess it depends on who you talk to.

As for African American, maybe in an official setting where I won't get lectured by human resources if I say black. But yea...black dude/white dude is my everyday vernacular...or brother if the dude is my friend. I'd guess you don't have many black friends or else you'd know how fake AA sounds in the real world...at least it's always rang fake, Many of my military buds are like, "Never been to Africa."

Funny story: In Korea, we called the Korean ran buses that came on base "Kimchi Buses" because Koreans eat the hell out of it. Their name for our buses? Cheese bus...because we eat it on everything. I suspect that a lot of shortened nicknames that end up being racist are military in origin. Just a guess.

Huh, who'da thought that we don't get to decide how other people are offended?

After the last comment by a PSU fan, I hope everyone understands why I post the ped state stuff. I want them all to go away and if it gets one to leave, I have accomplished my goal.
And here I thought it was because you are a jerk. Who knew?

Someone will probably question why you decided to put them in that order..
You are probably right and I honestly didn't even think about it when typing. I can only guess I thought of my race first and then typed the other "colors". I promise to think before I type from here on out not to offend anyone in the future.

1984 Randy Lewis beat a Japanese for the Olympic gold medal and afterwards called him a Jap. Probably meant nothing by it and had heard it at home. However its 33 years later, things change, and I am glad Gilman apologized.

If we didn't have the Internet nobody would have even heard this interview.

I'm not sure why some are being so obstinate. It's an offensive term, it simply is. But (fortunately) it hasn't been used much for decades so Gilman didn't know it and meant no offense. It was pointed out to him that it's an offensive term, so he apologized and I'm sure won't use it again.

There's no big deal here, and nothing to argue about.

No, I was just playin'... being sarcastic cuz that's what I do here. Anyway, I had no problem with the post and I certainly am not offended. But of course, I am first on your list so there will always be that....
