Anyone shipped their clubs recently. I have a trip coming to PHX for a long weekend. Debating shipping the sticks or just renting while out there. Looks like they have a rental service that delivers to your residence and picks up at certain date/time and you can pick your set. I know most courses rent out there also. Thoughts?

I haven’t shipped clubs personally but some buddies have used Ship Sticks. They really liked their service.

If you have a good case to ship clubs I recommend you use your own clubs if at all possible. The quality of rental sets at golf course is way too random and really can affect the enjoyment of the round. Especially if you’re going to play more than once.

if possible, use a towel or something to wrap around the clubs as well to protect them from being bounced around.

Went out to Vegas last year and did some golfing. I did not want to ship my clubs and decided to rent. All of the guys in my group checked their clubs at the airport. None of them had any issues. Every round we played I had wished I would have brought my own clubs. Next golf trip I will bring my own set along.

Bags fly free with Southwest (including golf clubs).

Hard case (with wheels) highly recommended. I recently found a used one on ebay for like $120 that should last 10+ years. If you use a soft case, the airline will only cover lost clubs and not damaged.

shipsticks.com is an option, but you have to plan ahead to make sure the clubs arrive in time or pay a lot more for expedited shipping. I've always just checked them on my flight as it seems like less hassle. Rental clubs can be very hit or miss. If you know what courses you're playing, call the pro shop and see what they've got. Maybe they have some brand new sets that you've been interested in trying or maybe they have 6 year old junkers.

This ain't the 1960's any more, slick. Have you seen the improvements in shipping carriers.....and with the newer woods, it is recommended you remved the heads and pack them IN the bag before shipping........Pretty low risk stuff nowadays. Golf pros ship commercial, even.
I sat in a terminal last Oct and watched baggage handlers on the tarmac toss luggage like they were olympic hammer throwers. My hard plastic suitcase was shattered by the time I got back home. But your right, there's a secure way to ship clubs...if you trust it.

If your playing more than 3 rounds, check them. I used golf clubs away one time i went to phx. It was really convenient. Roughly $40/day if I remember right (been 10 years or so) and they had them at my hotel when I got there, and picked them up again from the hotel.

Nice clubs too. I'd recommend that as an option.

Yeah, thinking of going that route as we are playing only two times it looks like. Those rental companies seem to have decent sets and will deliver and pick up at your hotel or residence.

I have a hard sided golf bag and have checked my clubs on flights without any issues.

Not an expert, but it seems a big question is whether your clubs are "normal" length/lie, or if they're modified to fit you. If your clubs aren't standard, then rental clubs aren't going to work well, and you'd want to have your own. Mine are 1 1/4" longer than normal, so rental clubs would have me all hunched over.

Rent if you are only playing twice. Since you are going to Phoenix you will have good options of rentals. You don’t have to worry about clubs getting lost or broken by the airline along with the pain of dealing with them at the airports both ways and the checked bag fees.

You should have gotten a new carrier, if what you said is truthful. I know a lot of guys (myself included) who have logged a lot of air miles with my golf bag, and really never had an issue. Sure those "hard cases" are gonna get scuffed a bit, but that is what they are made for. They are gonna get crammed and stuff, but chances are the contents will be safe.

Admittingly it was a cheap set of luggage. I was amazed at how cavalier and rough they were.

Hard cases are much heavier and won't carry as much as a good soft case. They are also generally more expensive and take up a lot more room to store. There are plenty of really good soft cases out there that will protect your clubs and allow you to pack other things without going over the airline weight limit.

Ship them or check them with a good case. Even if I’m only playing one round, I want my own clubs and gear.
