Weird addition here. I would think Oregon State and Wazzu would bring in more financial incentives.
Their commissioner is obsessed with building the best basketball league and wants to eventually get to a point where the Big 12 has separate media rights deals for basketball and football. He thinks that college basketball media rights are currently undervalued since they are often lumped together with football as a package deal. He thinks separating them out will help to increase the value.Weird addition here. I would think Oregon State and Wazzu would bring in more financial incentives.
The biggest hurdle is the revenue sharing of the NCAA tourney. If that were gone, it could get wild.Their commissioner is obsessed with building the best basketball league and wants to eventually get to a point where the Big 12 has separate media rights deals for basketball and football. As a college hoops junkie, I am very curious to see if this gets done. I know a lot of the current presidents are skeptical about it.
If that were to happen every small conference would go bankrupt. And I really don't think the current powers that be want that bad PR stink on them. The NCAA tournament basically funds most of the athletic departments around the country--it's what allows schools like UNI and Drake to continue playing non-revenue sports. The biggest hurdle is the revenue sharing of the NCAA tourney. I don't think the large conferences care at all about the smaller. If they did the PAC12 would still exist after this year.If that were to happen every small conference would go bankrupt. Possible we eventually get there. I just think there are a lot of factors that are at play that make it so the ecosystem doesn't completely get eaten by the large conferences. Like I said, most athletic departments are funded completely by the tournament--so potentially eliminating college sports for 200+ schools would have huge negative ramifications. It's one thing to screw 2 smallish power 5 schools and demote them to being a Mountain West team. It's a whole other thing to screw over this many schools.I don't think the large conferences care at all about the smaller. If they did the PAC12 would still exist after this year.
Isn't the financial incentive that Gonzaga always wins and people watch them?Weird addition here. I would think Oregon State and Wazzu would bring in more financial incentives.
Basketball tv rights is minuscule in comparison to football. I would think, and I could be wrong that adding Oregon state to get Portland would be more beneficial. Also why adding smu to the big 12 to get Dallas, and that program is likely a sleeping giant with nil moneyIsn't the financial incentive that Gonzaga always wins and people watch them?
