Good News/Bad News

Joe will likely leave after his Junior year unless he chooses to stay for four....

Joe W can’t create his own shot and he hasn’t shown much of coming off screens for shots. He needs a lottttt of work yet.

How much of it is Joe W and how much is Fran and the system? I didn't see anything that resembled an offense last night outside of a few post feeds to Garza. Looked like guys in space were expected to do something with a more athletic defender in their jock.

I would like to think DePaul was the perfect storm at the worst time but I think last night will be representative of what Iowa will see from any team with a pulse. Iowa isn't going to win many 1:1 match up's so the offense better start clicking sooner than later.

DePaul plays Minnesota on 11/29. It will be interesting to see how that goes. If they compete with MN, maybe this loss will be viewed a bit differently.

I thought the point guards dribbling down to the mid post and getting swarmed and turning the ball over was the offense? After all, we saw it too many times last night that it had to be a designed set.

It isn’t just last night but last year as well. He needs to figure out how to get his own shot. I would love to see him with 1 on 1 opportunities to show us but until then I will think he doesn’t have a go to move or any reason to believe he can create his own shot.

The Muscatine Flash known as Joe Wieskamp will
not being leaving anytime soon for the NBA.

He does not have the physical body to compete on
the NBA level. He is not quick or fast on his feet.
To just throw up 3 pointers is not the best ticket
to pro basketball.

Good post. Unfortunately the same can be said for the whole team. Joe T and CJ appear to be the most capable of creating their own shots.

Lol. Funny you mentioned that. I said the same thing to my friend at the game last night after seeing the 10th or so turnover as a result of guys dribbling into the spider web. Once, twice, three times maybe but you are right, it was all freaking night. We have all these shooters who don't want to pull up and take a jumper. CJ is the lone exception.

If you can't flush it on somebody or don't have a clear path, pull up and take an uncontested jumper vs. getting into a jam and throwing it away or expecting the ref to bail you out.

I think everyone needs to chill. It is one game. Lets give it some time. Conner will be fine. Joe T scored all the points when the game is over. Jack is way better than he has shown its two games for Lords sake. Joey struggled he gets a game here and there to be off. CJ is what I thought I tried to tell everyone dude is a baller and everyone jumped my shit for saying it. Hes going to be special. Pat was a top 70 player everyone relax. If the kid would of went to Minn or Wisconsin we would be killing Fran for not being able to recruit his own son so stop it. With that said. Lets play the best players more and get ball movement and run more offense for Joey and CJ.

he was not even honorable mention ALL B1G last night...work to do

Positives:
JoBo continuing comeback
CJF is good
Kreiner is under appreciated
Toussant is one of the best athletes in Iowa uniform in while
Garza has limitations but overall is solid nucleus piece
Weezy should be 2nd or 3rd Team ALL B1G

I agree with you that it was one game, but it's year what, 10 for Fran? His recruiting is not improving and the class of 2020 looks really suspect. 100% agree on CJ. Too early to tell much on Patrick and will likely take a year or more to see what the up side looks like. Fran has to right the ship. A loss is one thing. Getting run out of CHA 5 minutes in by DePaul with no answer was tough for me to stomach.

Can the "play fast" crap. This team isn't built for that and it leads to wild / reckless play like we saw last night. This team will be better served working the ball, posting and re-posting and avoiding up and down games IMO.

I honestly don't think it's the system, it's Wieskamp. Let me preface by saying that I love Wieskamp's game and I was a huge proponent of being the "man" because I think he has the mindset and is used to it from his HS days (unlike say a Cook who was the 2nd wheel to Tatum). Going into the year I was excited by the idea of the offense funneling through Wieskamp and Garza.

Also, I thought with a year of playing high-level college ball and Wieskamp testing the NBA waters and talking to teams (along with his great work ethic) would lead to a huge jump in his game as the go-to guy this year.

But from what we have seen, he still doesn't seem to have fully developed his mid-range game. And last night was just a terrible effort offensively by him. Iowa can't afford him having games like that and expect to win against good teams (and yes I think Depaul is a good team and will end up making the tourney - I think Leido has his players after 3 years and has seriously upgraded talent with transfers).

He played intimidated and hesitant. That can't be the case and he needs to take that next step for this team to be what we thought they might be able to be.

We saw how someone like Jok could thrive in this system. Wieskamp has to play in the between the arc and the basket.

One bright light was Frederick - he attacked and hit pull-ups and played how we need Wieskamp to play. He overall seems like a definite upgrade to Moss all-around. This team can't have Wieskamp and Garza and Bohannon (and if he is going to play that tentative and slow I would rather he just redshirts) all play that way and win. Those guys have to be tougher and leaders.

When Wieskamp and Garza both have off nights like this, the outcome is going to be bad.

Nunge's passiveness is the thing that is really perplexing to me. The guy looks like he doesn't want to be out there. They shouldn't have put all that weight on him if he's going to be on the perimeter. I'm hopeful he can put it together as the year progresses.

Our offensive game plan was really poor. They got in our faces and we had no answers for it.

I'm really sick of our players getting swatted or turning the ball over and immediately looking for a foul call. Play the game hard and don't expect to get bailed out.

As much as DePaul manhandled us early (19-2) they basically used only 8 players throughout the game whereas we used 11. They double and triple teamed Garza and he had a difficult time getting the ball out of the post as did Kriener : they had 7of our 19 turnovers which led to close to 30 points we gave them altogether. Nunge should be benched after these 3 games. He is SOFT and Patrick needs to redshirt to bring the rotation down to 9, For my .02 cents worth i would try a 3 guard offense with Weiskamp and Garza down low; JT, CJF and Connor as the guards.

the problem with using the fran plays to many players argument is when we play this bad what is fran supposed to do ? you have to try different combos . Joe T needs to be in the 25 minute range , connor 12 to 14 . nunge is going to disappoint us ( i really hope i am wrong ) . pemsl maybe 10 , i know he plays hard but he is just going to get in garzas way , both guys need to be on the blocks . bakari needs to play a lot more also .

It's the same old with Fran. Recruiting should be strategic not offer whoever and hope the pieces fit. I love Garza's tenacity, but he has to be more than 1 move guy in the post. DePaul was waiting for the spin and didn't go for his ball fakes. Kriener has more diverse post moves, but is hit or miss. No issue with these two.

Nunge-Pemsl are not complimentary. This spot needs to be a dude like Reed from DePaul. Long, rangy, athletic who can get out on shooters and affect dribble drives. I could care less about shooting 3's--have good hands, be able to flush it and get out and run. Scads of these guys all over the place but Fran of course can never land one.

Guard play is a broken record so won't waste time on it.

Joe T looked much quicker to me than the rest of the team. He had a couple of nice drives to the hoop. I hope the staff can get Joe ramped up to the college game ahead of schedule.
well he definitely looks quick but boy he sure doesn't play under control yet but I think that's to be expected from a true freshman point guard like that he's a little raw but you can't coach speed and quickness

True. I’d rather have somebody who plays a little out of control and has to learn to dial it back a little, (see Cook) versus somebody who is passive and has to learn to ramp up the intensity (see Uthoff/Nunge). I see the killer instinct with Toussaint, and Fredrick for that matter. Wieskamp had a rough game against DePaul, but he has it too, as does Bohannon obviously

Joe took a nasty spill in the previous game and fell right on his elbow. I would imagine that elbow was very sore and maybe he should not have played at all. His stroke was way off as was the rest of his game. Joe or Fran would never use that as an excuse but I bet that is the reason for his poor play.

It was actually a very physical game,... I was a little bit concerned about Jbo getting injured....
