just remember, no one is fact checking what you say in jury selection

i had jury duty earlier this year for a drug case. every person who said anything even remotely related to drugs or personal feelings about the subject was passed during jury selection

My response is based on the assumption that you are not otherwise excused by virtue of being afflicted by a law degree, before the matter is put to counsel following voir dire.

I served way back in the 80s. That and having a sister who filed a lawsuit and relatives in law enforcement seemed to have prevented me from being picked again.

I got summoned last year and figured as a lawyer they'd bounce me pretty quick. But neither side asked my occupation and I ended up on the jury and ultimately foreperson. Fairly low stakes aggravated misdemeanor case. Pretty interesting experience and bizarre case of the most messed up road trip ever to go terribly awry. Some of the jurors left me uninspired about the whole jury system though. The state absolutely did not meet its burden on one of the counts, but a couple jurors kept saying I just feel like he did something wrong. I think I read them the jury instruction about the state's burden/reasonable doubt maybe ten times.

That's crazy they will let lawyers like you and @Jimmy McGill on juries.

Mrs. A got a ED Va federal jury duty summons a couple of years ago. Early the morning before she was supposed to go to court, she played tennis with some friends. One of her tennis friends, a one-time white collar lawyer, told her that the court was slated to start a major, complicated espionage case that week (ie, potentially weeks of service), and thus, on her way home, she should pick up a copy of the Post and read the article on the case. So she did.

As it happened, the judge hearing the case is one of the most notorious hardasses on the ED Va bench (Judge Hilton). So he asks if any of the jury pool had heard anything about the case, and Mrs. A and others remark that they read the Post article. He was immediately pissed that there had been an article the morning of jury selection. So he calls them up one by one and asks if they'd formed any opinions based on the article. A by now very frightened Mrs. A remarked that she felt sorry for the defendant based on what she read. He dismissed her from the pool and was very pissed. I think she may have had a day-drink that day.

Runaway Jimmy gets his ass kicked so far.....

I'm having second thoughts....what if this will be civil case....non-local attorneys (or perhaps from out state), that have no idea who I am.

That would be pretty lazy by counsel, but it happens.

whatever the general topic of the case

"yes...i had a good friend who was impacted by _______________. he/she struggled with it for years and we've had a lot of conversations about it. those conversations have affected how i feel about _______________."

I voted no but wonder if one side or the other would want you on the jury while one side or the other wouldn't.

I want you guys to guess the possibility of me getting selected.
Jimmy, I hope this “notice” doesn’t disrupt your interview schedule for “that position” promised for you in the new Administration, effective in January of 2025. I think you being a show trial judge for all those DoJ bastards who were out to get OUR President will send a strong signal to the world! Your name will be in all the (revised) US History books that will be published in 2028…..And we here at HROT will all be able to say…..”Ah yes, we knew Jimmy back when he was just one of us!” Now he will have a statue of his own in Washington DC….and on the Ped Mall in Iowa City!

Never thought of writing a fiction book. But you might have something here. Creativity fun.

I'm at an impasse on my non-fiction one.

I would hate to be the foreperson. I feel like I would direct people's decisions.

But......who are we kidding....I'm not getting on a jury
If you do somehow get on and end up foreperson, just try to focus them on the jury instructions and let them apply that law to the evidence. Minds tend to wander.

Thanks, but I know. It is unlikely to happen. But I will keep my thoughts quiet until everyone has their say
I was just surprised at how much some of the jurors were focusing on things that had almost no bearing on any element of the offense. It was definitely a useful experience for my own practice.
